Default [UPDATE] Stock Rom 2.3.6 DDKQ8(INU) overview!

FINALLY......2.3.6 has arrived in India for our Galaxy Ace!

There are some changes introduced by Samsung in this version (some mainly because of Apple's patent fight with Samsung on Slide to unlock lock screen and Overscroll bounce...)

So here are the changes which I found:-

1) Lock Screen

The Unlock method has changed. When you keep your finger on the screen, a lock like symbol will appear! You have to slide your finger over the screen and make the lock open!(I think this lock screen is there on the S2 too...)

One more advantage is that the lock screen also displays your unread text message count and you can directly access the messages by sliding on top of the red circle which has a message symbol on top! It even supports missed call countand you can access your missed calls directly! Cool, huh?

Unfortunately, you don't have the old slide to unlock method and you have to adjust to the new lock screen.

2) Touchwiz

Not much has changed...! The call button icon and Memo icon has changed somewhat. And the homescreen is loopable now.....you can go directly from the last homescreen to first homescreen. In the app drawer, you can go to any page by simply tapping at its screen number on the top, and it will go to that page......so if you want to go to page 5 from page 1, you have to tap the 5th grey dot on top to reach the fifth page!

3) Call Receiving Screen

Just like the Lock Screen, even the call screen has changed! Now it looks somewhat better than the old one! NOTE: I have pixelated the caller ID for security reasons!

4) Overscroll Glow

Gallery Overscroll:

The overcroll glow effect also has been added! It is nice in some places like the settings menu and annoying in some areas like the gallery! But overall it looks nice!

5) Gallery
NEW

OLD

Very light theme differences....See and tell me what is different!

That's all!

Tutorial on flashing with Odin: How to upgrade Samsung Galaxy Ace via ODIN | Ace Tips

Clear Cache Partition from recovery menu after update! Otherwise, you will have problems!

How to go to recovery menu: Turn off your phone. Then, ON it by holding Power+Home button at the same time. You will reach the recovery menu. You cannot use touch there. You can Navigate only with the Volume buttons and Select using Home button.

Conclusion

Overall it is faster, looks better and I somewhat like the lock screen! I would recommend you to go for the update! You can go for it even if you don't live in India.

Thanks for Reading! Have fun!

Noticed that the ringtone for receiving a sms & the delivery report is the same - no matter what ringtone you have applied Bloody inconvenient
&
When the phone gets charged I do not get s sound notification like in 2.3.4
The notification ringtone works fine for alarms/reminders but so far its not rung when battery is full nor is there a icon in the notification bar with the battery symbol. It only says battery charged below the clock. Has anyone noticed the same? Or is it only for me (some glitch)

I don't have any problems like that! Reflash your firmware.

For me OTA method did not work! It asked me to download 14.4 mb and started installing after download. After that it displayed DDKQ8 but it was still in 2.3.4 and the wifi didn't work and all apps kept on crashing! So I downloaded the file package and flashed it via odin and everything just works fine! I didn't lose any apps because I was in INU! Try it via odin and I still do not trust OTA!

Is that the link you have given above, I am downloading it a 136.4MB file does ti also contain ODIN. (Excuse my queries which I know sound dumb, I am a newbie) How long did it take to install? The 14 odd MB via OTA gave me the jitters as it took about 30+ mins to install.

My link works and it will take a long time if you have slow internet! I have 256 kbps(very damn slow) and I used a download manager called flashget and it took about 2 hours to download. You need to know how to flash with odin.

First you need to switch off your phone and then on it by holding volume down+home+power button! It will go to download mode. Then plug your phone to the computer with usb cable and follow the video

In the end after firs boot again switch off the phone and power it on with home+power buttons and you will go to recovery menu. Then with your volume buttons go down to clear cache partition and then press home key! Then just reboot and your update is complete!

Default wifi disconnection

I updated my galaxy ace to 2.3.6 but my wifi disconnected for every 3 minute and then reconnect after 2 to 3 second. When I downgrade to 2.3.4 there is no problem. What might be the problem?

ok so instead of pressing home button and then swiping to unlock now have to press home button, hold the touch screen to make lock appear and then swipe? if so thats even more cumbersome. They had to change this due to a silly patent?

I use ezanswer for answering calls. Which allows use of buttons to answer or pressing a virtual button on the touchscreen instead of swipe.

Yes. As long as your phone is S5830, it will work. You won't have any problems at all.

updated from 2.3.4

didnt lose any settings or data (unlike when upgrading from 2.2 to 2.3.4), all the apps and everything is as it was... Thank you, had no problems.

Phone is visibly faster! Just wait till it chugs through all the shit on first boot...

Is this Rom supposed to be rooted, as it's not for me, no probs to root it though I would think, if it is not rooted what program would be the best choice to root it ???

Cheers.

Also I don't seem to have the option anymore to just connect to 2g network, so I think I am 3g all the time now, I liked the option to connect to 2g as it saved power

I never cleared the cache, I hope I can go back and do it now ????

Or maybe it's an Indian thing, no 2g in India or 3g, not sure how I am connected, but I can make calls.

It seems I do have 3g access, I had it in gsm mode only and not gsm/wcdma auto mode, it sems the only way I can turn 3g on and off is two switch between them, as I have no way of doing it the other way ???

?

Cheers.

I just read that 3g is not that popular in India so maybe this rom does not have 3g support in it, I don't seem to be able to connect to 3g with it at all, am I doing something wrong ???

Look at this:

2g is GSM mode and 3g is wcdma mode! You should be able to switch between them like that!
Clear the cache or you may have problems. There is nothing wrong because it is an Indian rom. It will be compatible all over the world and it will work with all the functions.

Yeah that's the way i have been switching, just a tiny bit different to my stock rom where it had the use 2g option, still works the same basically

Cheers.

Was this rom supposed to be rooted, as it was not and I had to use one of my root programs to root it, which worked fine

Cheers.

You should root it manually.
Use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27159355

It will work well.

Id there something I have to now turn on on the phone to be able to use keys again ???

Kies sometimes doesnt detect device. So try to restart the computer and/or phone or try to uninstall and install drivers.

Yes It was meant for those who use KIES to backup/sync etc of their phone data. Since KIES is so problematic its better to use this s/w for these functions. Its better to use KIES only to update the phone s/w, if one wants to do that.

I never had any problem connecting my phone to Kies and it only detects phone running on official firmware, and i am not sure if it give any problem connecting a rooted phone. just make sure you have the required hardware and software needed to run kies and if required download Galaxy Ace Drivers separately and install on you system, you can find the at samfirmware.com

updating to 2.3.6 if you are already on 2.3.4 i would suggest to do an OTA as its just a 14MB download compared to all the wizards that you have to go through.
and if you are still on 2.2 froyo and can't connect to kies that god help you... but in that case you can still flash the update through odin if update is all you want.

I too never had any problem with KIES except its a bitch when trying to connect via Bluetooth/WiFi. And I know its a temperamental s/w at best Since I was using 'MyPhoneExplorer' with my old phone Sony Ericsson K750i & this s/w started supporting Android and my current phone is an Ace my transfer of data was seamless. After using it for more than 5+ yrs I can say its much better than KIES (in both phones) in every way except that it cannot update the Firmware or connect to Samsung Apps. I connect to MyPhoneExplorer either via bluetooth or by wifi & its a breeze either way, rarely a usb cable. Even my update from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 recently was by OTA lol not KIES.

I will try using this 'MyPhoneExplorer' just to see if for my self but i don't need to do any back up on my system as every thing i have is on my sd card and some useful stuff i keep in dropbox, photos are also uploaded in dropbox and the remaining is the sms and the call logs which i use Sms backup+ to save it in my gmail. all contacts saved in google contacts. so i don't need to do any backup, the phone does it by itself....

if the phone is rooted use 'my backup root' to backup.

it can also do call logs and sms backups and is a free app.

Hi,

does it work for any baseband?
My galaxy ace has baseband S5830BVJKP7 (brazil) and I'd like to know if I can proceed with upgrade.

Thanks

It may not work for 5830B
BTW you can go to sammobile.com and get the file for your phone region and flash with odin just like I mentioned above.
