Hey guys, i installed android 2.2, this is amazing. But when im trying to use websites with adobe flash player, it says i dont have it. I cant seem to download it from market for the this phone
i would also like to know how to install flash player
my understanding is that it's not just 2.2 you need for full flash, but there is a hardware requirement as well. i think the galaxy 3 will only ever support flash lite.
though if you want flash mainly for youtube, then if you have 2.2 you can download the new youtube app which will give you a better experience to that of the youtube app that was pre installed on the phone
So after much frustration with Samsung I've finally given up and installed the latest version of froyo from samfirmware (european jpe at time of writing).
Bit of a newb at this but thanks to instructions on this thread, fairly straight forward. No longer tars and single install files though but rars which you have to extract the contents of and then specify the pda, boot, phone and csc yourself. other than that...thanks samfirmware and android forums!
o.k. initial impressions. at first it didn't feel like i was getting a speed boost, but then i never felt it was running slow on 2.1.
gps fix much improved, tethering works as does install to sd. the three major reasons for me to ugrade, so far so good.
a couple of minor things..
1. the language defaulted to non english, no probs there i can just switch. however the android market seems to think i'm now in another country (currency dkm ?). Not sure how to tell it otherwise or of the implications of leaving it. Bought Moodagent and it recognised my credit card as being from the UK and did a currency conversion on the fly, but does this mean i might not be able to download some apps that might at the moment only be released in certain countries??
2. In application management a lot of the apps are showing a zero bytes in size
3. I now have demo versions of Assasins Creed and Tetris that i son't want and can't remove...thanks Samsung!
4. The camera crashes after taking a picture
5. The gallery can't seem to show any of the photos on my SD card even though the music app can find and play the mp3s
Update.
I had to reformat my SD card. A bit of a pain as it wiped all my files but i have them all backed up so not too much of an issue. However this has fixed the camera crash and the gallery photo problem (must have been some weird permissions issues) and bizarely it's made my phone run a little bit faster.
I wonder if the sd card issues are because I followed the advise of removing it whilst flashing? Perhaps the upgrade process needs to adjust permissions on the sd card? Not to worry, it feels good to have an empty phone again!
has anyone carried out this upgrade on an apollo i5801...NOT the i5800 not sure what the difference is with these two different models lol...hope to upgrade mine soon...but dubious thats all...i want froyo and well samsung are dragging their butts more than a dog with an itchy butt...
Alright guys, since i'm tired of waiting for the official update here in New Zealand, I'll update this and get back to you guys; an extra opinion always helps!
hi buddy ,just wana ask when i am extracting my .rar file to get the tar file its regularly asking me the password but if i am providing a blank default password then its sasying either password wrong or corrupt file.plz help stucked hear,or just tell me how to getr my .tar file
Hi guys, I read this tutorial and another thousand carefuly, followed all the steps perfectly, and still, I got the same error every time I try to flash.
My screen looks like this (everything seems fine, right? The .tar is there, the .ops is there, the port is recognized...):
Then I click on "Start" and this happens:
What am I doing wrong?
I have a Galaxy I5800L, with this version: I5800LVIJG7.
I was trying to update to I5800LVIJG8 (I downloaded this firmware directly from samfirmware), and then if that worked I was going to update to froyo.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be happening? I lost hours on this shit and couldn't figure it out.
Tip: I can't get my phone connected with Kies, but I guess my drivers are ok since Odin recognized the port.
Edit: Nevermind, did it from work PC and it worked flawlessly. I guess I've messed up my drivers at my home PC.

Maybe, but this port never let me down. I guess I could give it a try on another port. When I get home I'll check this, or I'll leave it alone forever, yeah, probably the second option.

Have you tried flashing a stock 2.1 firmware first, say I5800XXJK1 ? I know I had problems the first time I tried upgrading to 2.2. However I follow the steps in the guide exactly every time, particularly the hard resets before and after flashing etc, and don't have any problems.
Somebody is asking exactly the same question on xda forums
Hi
I am new to this forum, but found it really good after reading all the steps and question answer on this tech forum.

my phone details are:
baseband version: I5800XXJG3
build: ECLAIR.XXJG7
FIRMWARE:2.1-update1
I have already downloaded following files:

Firstly I don't think there is a way to take a full backup of your current installation so that you can revert back to it. It is a bit like upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. If you don't have an original Windows Vista installation disc you are not going to be able to revert back to it once you have overwritten you hard drive with Windows 7. The best thing you can do is download the closest 2.1 stock ROM to yours from www.samfirmware.com . The closest one I can see is I5800XXJG6.
Secondly make sure you have installed the latest version of Samsung Kies (so you have the most up to date drivers).
Unzip the apollo_0531.zip. This will create a folder in which you will find the apollo_0531.OPS file.
Unrar the I5800XXJPB.rar file. This will create a folder in which you will find the I5800XXJPB tar archive file. This is flashed as 'one package' in ODIN.
I don't know what Odin_with_OPS.zip and I5800XXJG3_XXJG7_OXXJG5.rar are so ignore them.
Now right click on I5800_Odin_Multi_Downloader_v4.252.exe and Run as Administrator.
Once ODIN has started follow the instruction in the original post.

I own a Samsung Galaxy GT-I5800L, the original PDA was "I5800LUMJH1 [R5]" (Telcel, Mexico)... I followed the 7 steps carefully using I5800XXJPB and everytime Odin stucks on "boon.bin download".
Odin timer keeps running, but after 3 hours I think something is wrong. Yesterday even leave the phone all nigth (more than 6 hours) and Odin was still stuck. So I disconnected the phone and remove the battery to try again.
I tryied I5800XXJPF with the same results, only that now it stuck on "modem.bin download", Now I even tried to downgrade using I5800LVIJG8 and I5800BOJH1 with the same results...

Kamargo,
I am thinking that the i5800L is a bit like the i5801 in that it is Network Provider based phone. Try flashing it again but DON'T check the 'Protect OPS' box.
Make sure you do a hard rest first through recovery mode, not through code on phone, ie press Vol Up + Home + Power button. Then use Vol Up and Vol Down button to go through menu. Select Wipe Cache/data then Select Factory Reset.
Wait for phone to reboot then switch it off. Remove battery and wait 3-4 minutes. Re insert battery and then go through the flash procedure again.
If that still doesn't work flash version 2.1 again until you have a stable working version of 2.1.
Then try flashing 2.2 again making sure you do a hard reset first.

If it is staying at the pulsating logo screen it sounds like you are in a boot loop. Try reflashing again. It took me a couple of goes before I was successful. Remember always do a hard reset and follow the steps to the letter. Or try the XDA developers forum versions of stock ROMs
BJLABUK,
THANK YOU so much for your wonderful insights on this upgrade. Did as you directed to update by 15800L to Froyo and it worked flawlessly. I used your directions for the JPF upgrade instead of the JPB one. As of today it has performed without problems. Once again thank you.
Ignore the JPF version and use the JPB version as there is only the one '.tar' file in the folder.
Follow the following instructions:
Before these steps make sure you have latest version of kies installed, it helps in keeping latest drivers installed.
1) BEFORE connecting your phone to the USB port of your PC, START ODIN (if using Windows 7 or Vista right click the ODIN.exe file and click 'run as administrator')
2) Check "One Package" checkbox
3) Check “Reboot” checkbox
4) Check "protect ops" checkbox (Don’t check this if you are flashing I5801 with I5800 firmware for the first time.)
5) Check "reset time" checkbox, keep the default value as it is i.e. 300 don’t select any other options.
6) Hit "reset files" button once.
7) Click OPS button and select the OPS file for I5800.
8) Click 'one package' and select the '.tar' you want to flash. The file must a .tar file.
9) You are about to connect your phone to the PC . If you want to take a backup of your data/apps then do this now. For that you can use Titanium Backup.
For backing up contacts and SMS.
A) go to contacts press menu/left most button select import/export option,
then export the contacts to sdcard.
B) For SMS use the app called SMS backup.
10) Switch off your phone and REMOVE your sdcard and sim card. Then switch on your phone and wait for the Home screen to appear. Now do a factory reset/ Hard Reset which should clear the cache. To Hard Resetyour phonego to the keypad and type the code *2767*3855# (this will automatically start the process and wipe the cache and reset the phone). Once the Home screen appears again switch off the phone. Now restart the phone in 'downloading mode' by pressing the 'home' (centre) + 'vol. down' + 'power' button together (the message 'Downloading.... Do not turn off target!!!' should appear on the screen, or 'Forced upload by Key pressing').
11) NOW connect your phone to PC using the USB cable.
12) ODIN will show yellow color and com port no. in the box near the top in ODIN (see photo above). IF ODIN does not detect your phone at this stage then something is wrong. Check your USB drivers etc and that your phone is in download mode.
13) Click Start and watch the progress bar (green color) in the top box (above the timer).
14) WAIT until PASS message appears in box (box will turn blue color).
15) At some point ODIN will displays the message 'disconnect serial port & wait until rebooting phone' in message box. Don't disconnect the phone just yet! Wait until you see the messages "Instant destroyed' and then ' Killed timer! '. It is then okay to disconnect the phone from the PC.
Let the phone boot (if it hasn't already). It may take some time 5-10 mins for first boot so don’t panic.
After reboot do a Hard Reset again. This will again clear the cache. Let the phone restart and wait for home screen to appear. If all okay then power off, put sim and sdcard back in and then power on.
Bruce
Worked perfectly!!
I have downloaded I5800XXJPF from the link given in first post and extracted. I got 4 files with .tar.md5 extension. I have renamed them to .tar. Then instead of 'one packege' I have selected the individual packages.
Everything else I followed as given in this post and it worked perfect.
Here's an easy and in-depth way to upgrade your Samsung Galaxy I5800L, running 2.1 Eclair to Froyo 2.2. Sadly at this time Samsung hasn't officially made Froyo available for the I5800, but luckily we can do it ourselves!
No rooting needed.
What you will need:
A Windows environment, used Win 7 on a netbook for this. Sadly Samsung doesn't support OS X.
Ensure your battery is fully charge.
Now, factory reset your phone: *#*#7780#*#*
Or go into Settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset.
Here's a helpful tip/step that most other tutorials don't tell you. Remove your SIM and SD(if you have one) card from the phone. This may save you some complications.
It will avoid any hangups or stalls, like I've experienced, almost leaving me helpless.
Right, now let's get to actually installing Froyo.
First check your firmware *#1234#, write it down, store it on you computer, in case you need to restore later.
Load up "ODIN Multi-Downloader" (I5800_Odin_Multi_Downloader_v4.252.exe). If you're on Win7, a popup "IMAGE PATH [chinese writing]" keeps opening. It's annoying, but it shouldn't do anything to your install. Just keep clicking OK.
2. Select the OPS file you downloaded. Click the "OPS" button. Select file "apollo_0531.ops".
3. Now go to the bottom option "Select Integrate Package..." and select the 2.2 Froyo (.tar) file your downloaded. It should be one file.
With the "One Package" button, select your .tar file.
4. Here's the tricky part, that's not so tricky. Switch off your phone (hold the power button "Power OFF"). Remove the battery, so it doesn't boot up automatically. Then hold the "Home + Volume Up + Power" buttons simultaneously.
Until the screen shows the android icon with probably the "Force Upload by Button Pressing" words.
(If those combination buttons don't work, try "Volume Down" or "Volume Up + Down" instead).
5. When the "Force Upload" screen appears, like the image above, connect your phone to the computer with the USB cable provided and let windows detect the drivers for the phone and install them automatically.
6. Once the drivers are loaded, and the phone is detected by ODIN as shown, click start. The phone will load data from the ODIN application you supplied and reboot itself, until you see the Home Screen load successfully. It takes a while(5-8mins), but way shorter than say loading a Windows OS.
Do not uplug the device until you see the Home Screen and have successfully unlocked the phone.
Note.
If you phone hangs, or stalls, you should resort another 2.2 firmware, or downgrade.
7. Enjoy your semi-new phone! It feels new and refreshing to have an updated firmware for your phone. Especially since it's free!
Here are some Key new Features in Froyo
Colorful menu/settings interface.
You can Install apps to the SD CARD (most, not all).
And the ability to play FLASH content Natively (websites, flash native games, online videos etc.).
General Performance boost in processor, supposedly Better Battery life and Ram management.

what is the password in order to extract the tar file inside the rar? thanks
I have an i5800L made for the Latin America region (Brazil, maybe - my locally-owned cellular provider buys phones wherever they can get them for a decent price) & I'm in the southern US, so no official froyo update through Kies for me. I bit the bullet and upgraded my phone manually with Odin. Samfirmware has a 2.2 file for what they list as USA (pretty sure it's for Canada), so I flashed my phone with that and turned my i5800L into an i5800D. I started setting things up and noticed that the IMEI line was missing. It hadn't become zeroes, it was just gone from the phone status, and the network type had become GPRS rather than UMTS, which is what I had before. I had phone & data service, though.
I rooted my phone & started restoring my backups, then the whole thing froze up. I rebooted, and the phone would't get past the GT-i5800D screen. I tried re-flashing, and it got as far as "Deleting files please wait". I had a long moment of panic, thinking I had bricked my phone. Ultimately, I ended up downgrading back to 2.1 and trying the upgrade again with a different (European) 2.2 file (XXJPF), which also worked. Once again, my IMEI number didn't show up in the stats. I later discovered that by typing *#06# I was able to check it, and the IMEI was correct. I guess I should have known it was, since I had phone service. I'm a n00b atAndroid stuff.
At any rate, I now have an i5800 2.2 phone that feels brand new. The Network Type is once again UMTS, although I lose service if I switch to the WCDMA Only option, which I could do with the original firmware. It works in Auto GSM/WCDMA mode, though. I have full 3G/HSDPA capabilities. It's rather annoying when it drops down to Edge, but I can live with it. The main reason I even upgraded was so I could use the wireless hotspot feature of the phone to connect my new unbranded Chinese tablet to the internet when I'm on the go (and it works fabulously, btw!)
Big thanks for the step-by-step instructions and all who replied with their results, both successes & not-so-successes. I really like my little phone, even though it's an "everywhere but the US" model. I think it's a shame, though, that Samsung hasn't released the upgrade worldwide. I'm sure there are a few Brazilians who would like an official upgrade.
Have a great day!

Reason: Changed "GPRS" to "GSM".
Guys,
Are you still struggling with this complex way of upgrading?
Samsung has given the direct way to upgrade ur firmware directly thru kies.
Though this says its for i5800, it works for i5801. No risk, no explicit backup, etc... I'm not sure why we r struggling with unknown 3rd part SWs?
(Snipped link because I'm too new, still, to post links)
Samsung hasn't released the upgrade everywhere. Canada has it, but Latin America doesn't. I have a Latin America region phone, and Kies said my firmware was up-to-date with I5800LVIJG7 (2.1 Eclair). I would have liked to upgrade through Kies, but that wasn't an option for me. I'm glad for the alternative.

Kies is okay for installing the official Samsung upgrades (when they appear!) if that is all you want to do, but there are some great custom ROMs out there, developed by the XDA Developers, which can't be downloaded via Kies. So although this may seem a 'complex' way of upgrading it has its purpose and is worth learning.
I have the battery problem where it discharges to about 50% then suddenly to 15 or 5%. Rebooting sees the 50% restored.
Is it so that a firmware upgrade via Kies will fix this? If so, I installed Kies when the phone was new about 3 months ago and it recognised the phone OK. Now, when I try to get the phone to connect via the cable it will not, which means I can't follow the upgrade method at Android Upgrade Procedure
Does anyone have a suggestion how I can get the PC to connect again to the phone?
Edit:I have tried un-installing and re-installing but pc still fails to recognise phone

Reason: Addition
I have tried to download all the files you list but everytime the 15800XXJPF AND THE 15800xxjpb rar files are opened they have a * next to them and are incomplete...any ideas please Thank you
Click on the link and download the one you want. Then use IZarc or RAR Extract Frog to unarchive the file. You will need to enter the password to complete it.
hi guys ive just tried this the official samsung way an all its saying now is preparing firmware ugrade components.. the progress bar is moving backwards and forwards, has been doing so for about 20 mins, how long does it usually take ?
