I think that there is almost no difference in android 2.1 and 2.2!?
The only thing I have extra now with froyo is app2sd.
Multitouch and flash dont work?!
Is there android gingerbread 2.3 for galaxy 5/europe?
ok i am confused now.. i did this twice already today.. i got 2.2 running both times.. but Swype doesn't seem to work.. i have also tried getting the sywpe beta installer which says i need to disable swype but i don't have an option to disable it.. i downgraded back to the 2.1 and it seems to work.. so does that mean i wouldn't get swype if i upgraded?? i have a i5500 (bought in UK) ..
If you google Swype and Froyo/2.2 issues there are hundreds of threads for all phones. So guess it must be an incompatibility. A few replies I saw said they got it working by uninstalling and reinstalling, which it looks like you've tried. Have you tried long pressing to get the input method and make sure Swype is not the input method and then reinstalling (clutching at straws here )
when is froyo comming to galaxy 5? i have read that it was supposed to already be here yet i see no trace of update.
Does anyone have any info on this cause froyo will fix a lot of stuff with galaxy 5 and it will give us multi-touch and ap instalation to sd card.
Any word on official Froyo update?
Last i heard was March, any one know more?
TIA
It should had been in december. But that never came true.
There weren't enough people to test the Froyo version.
But on samfirmware.com you could download and upgrade it unofficially.
I think they are all good.
I've had the USA version released in december works perfect.
Since yesterday I've the European Froyo version.
(:

Hey, where did you find the European version? Will this version be rolled out to all EU countries or is it country specific?
Also bhavkam in a post above put a very helpful tutorial in his post, will this be the European version? Id prefer to have the European version but havent a clue how to upgrade to it!!
Just checked Kies, no update.
Just outa curiosity, what message you guys getting from kies?
Im getting " this device cant be updated " which dont sound right to me.
I got tired of waiting so on Friday night i upgraded it with the Europe version available on samfirmware, works great and huge difference in battery performance and speed already

Is it working ok? i heard you cant download certain apps when upgrading yourself.
It seems like Samsung is going to release FroYo for the G5 soon. They've pulled down all available upgrades from older to a more recent build of Éclair. Two weeks ago it was possible to update to a January build KA1 of the Android 2.1 on XEU version of the device. Not this update is no longer available. Today I checked all available versions with their product codes using the registry hack and Kies_1.5.3.10103_64_1.
I've tested all these and none of them could be updated to a later version of Éclair, neither to FroYo :
GT-I5500YKAXFA
(SOUTH AFRICA)
I5500XWJH4/I5500XFAJG1/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJH4
I5500XWJH5/I5500XFAJG1/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJH5
I5500XWJG9/I5500XFAJG1/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJG9
GT-I5500YKAXFE
(SOUTH AFRICA)
I5500XWJH4/I5500XFEJG1/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJH4
I5500XWJG9/I5500XFEJG1/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJG9
GT-I5500YKAXFV
(SOUTH ARFICA)
I5500XWJH5/I5500XFVJG2/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJH5
I5500XWJH4/I5500XFVJG2/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJH4
None in this list is currently upgradeable, maybe for a reason.
I've already installed I5500XWJP9 and it looks running smooth. I am not using its compass, as I have a real compass :-) Neither am I using the Android Market, but some alternative app markets out there so I have no idea whether certain apps will not download. What I find annoying in this build of the FroYo for G5 is that it comes translated in not too many languages and it is probably the only reason that Samsung are still not putting the FroYo firmware up on their update servers. I do not find Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian and other languages which were present in later versions of Éclair.
Btw don't get scared by KIES messages that device could not be upgraded. It is just an ugly translation of the tool in action. In fact this message means that there are not current updates for the the region of the device available at the moment.
Stay tuned for the official FroYo soon !

Thanks for the information, and I'm also fairly sure that we're going to receive a Froyo update at some time (considering that the Samsung Open Source Release Center already released Froyo sources in the "I5500XXJPG_Froyo_OpenSource.zip" archive).
There is a problem with your research, though. According to reports, around late February, Samsung disabled their web-facing FUS server. This means that end-users can no longer query for or download firmwares, and KIES 1.5 (using the registry hack method or otherwise) no longer works. Kies 2.0 is now the only way to get access to firmware updates, but nobody has yet found a way to intercept communication between Samsung's servers and the Kies client.
Anyway, TomBot (the poster who told us that Froyo is available on Kies) appears to be a resident of the United Kingdom, according to their Youtube account. If there are any UK members reading, I would suggest that you check for updates on Kies 2.0 (the latest version - older versions no longer work!). I'm from Ireland (phone is branded O2), and I'm getting the message that my phone can't be upgraded - but I assume that's because I already flashed to I5500XWJP9 using Odin.
Thank you for the helpful information and links, subpsyke
It seems like the registry hack update did not work anymore, which is sad news as my phone is for the eastern european market and will hopefully get updated as later as possible. I hope to see any workaround for this issue or a leaked official UK ROM soon.
Well, well. Just got a way at least to restore my I5500 back to its original firmware. Just to mention that previously I've tested lots of firmware versions before upgrading to the leaked January build of FroYo for the I5500.
As seen on XDA, there is a new version 1.8.0.0 of the registry tweak working with KIES 2. In fact it is difficult to tell that it is working. Maybe it is just okay for a reserch concerning current available versions of the firmware for the different regional versions of it. The funniest thing is, you are getting the «update» option, but shortly after initating update procedure KIES 2 tells that device could not be updated.
A good research has been made by LuffarJoh and you could find more on it here. However it does not solve the issue for the moment.
I've found a little workaround to the issue for me. Here are the details concerning my case :
1. My device is for the Bulgarian market and had GT-I5500YKAVVT product code.
2. I've recently uploaded some ROMs from samfirmware.com website not for my region and this rendered the device to be non-upgradeable using KIES except the registry hack which is currently not working as noted in this thread by subpsyke. Samsung disabled the KIES 1 update and started using encrypting their traffic with the more recent version of KIES 2. I've panicked a bit after reading that there is no way to switch back to my original version and therefor will never get the official FroYo when becomes available.
Here is how I solved it for my phone.
1. I've uploaded Russian version of the firmware hanging around at samfirmware. It is in fact «I5500XWJH4/I5500SERJH2/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJH4». Its only difference from my previous original version of the firmware for the Bulgarian market is evidently the CSC version «I5500XWJH4/I5500OXXJH1/I5500XWJG3/I5500XWJH4» (bolded one).
2. I've rooted device using Universal Androot.
3. I've updated /system/CSCVersion.txt by replacing «I5500SERJH2» with «I5500OXXJH1» and plugged back my phone to the KIES 2.
4. Ta-daaa! No more «The version of this device cannot be updated.». Without any registry hacking I've succeeded to bring back my phone to its latest Bulgarian firmware revision which is : PDA:JK2 / PHONE:JK3 / CSC:JI3.
Btw, here is some research I've just made using the other publicly available product codes. As you could clearly see - there is NO FroYo for the I5500 yet. When it will be officialy available - who knows Let's hope that it will be soon and that the GPS issues will be fixed as using the leaked FroYo, GPS works sluggish without A-GPS turned on.
Respect !

I've tried spoofing using the DBT product code that you provided, but it doesn't offer Froyo. However, I think that they are other German versions of this phone, of which the codes you haven't provided. You can see the potential codes from the Kies 2.0 Register Patcher that you link to.
Here is my source of these product codes : Samsung Mobile Firmware Queries & Downloads - Windows Phone @ MoDaCo. Aside from the fact that the guy posting there wants to make some easy money selling something which is not his property, this excel file is a very precious source of product codes and software version :P
As seen from your other posting in this thread, German and Swedish users got some earlier versions of FroYo. However as I checked with these product codes it looks like there was not FroYo for the I5500 last night. Maybe Samsung made some tests and posted these versions by accident and users got the luck to test them. I see not reason why one regional ROM should get the update earlier than another. I think that if there is any version that would logically get the FroYo earlier should be the unbranded XE* - XEU, XEF etc.
Well, at this moment I think to make the update a few weeks after FroYo becomes available as there are some things I actually don't like in this leaked ROM : the GPS is sooo slooow & there are missing languages (no matter that I am in fact using only French translation). On the other side there are some pros like better battery usage and Task Manager. I hope to see all the cons fixed before going FroYo. At least that is the idea of the update - to have better experience using the device

Thanks for the information. By the way, you may want to investigate Motafoca's modded ROM (current version is 2.0.9, but that's internal numbering and is based on Samsung's Froyo source release).
I'm running this build at the moment and it's very fast; it uses the European baseband and has 25 languages (including French of France and Suisse). Of course, when a newer official Froyo build becomes available, I'll be switching to that...

Thanks for the link, subpsyke,
the last Motafoca ROM that I tested was 2.0.8b Standard theme. I find this project very interested and feel happy to see that this phone gets more and more support from the community each day. The 2.0.8b version that I tried was based on L version of the phone (for the American continents) and did not had French, but as seen by your posting the team compilled its new release using the European source code tarball.

Is it working ok? i heard you cant download certain apps when upgrading yourself.
I havent had any problems downloading apps from the official app market, i have noticed better speed and battery life, also prior to the upgrade my memory card would reject itself at least 30-40 times a day!! I havent had it once since i upgraded.
Works great so far, no problems what so ever mate. Im not sure if i should root this phone, i am not sure there is any benefit to it?
I've heard there is hope in Froyo with this issue. Anyone know for sure? I can't seem to find a ROM to update it for Canada and was told I should not take a chance doing so unofficially. Bell refuses to install Froyo stating the phone does not support it.
Does anyone have ANY help on this issue? I need a reliable smart phone. iPhone is looking nicer and nicer the more problems I get but I do not want anything fancy expensive or large. ARGHH!
