Samsung Delivers World of New Experiences With Upgraded Galaxy Spica

Android 2.1 gives Galaxy Spica new functionality and unrivalled user experience

SEOUL, Korea – March 17, 2010 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced it has upgraded its powerful Galaxy Spica (I5700) smartphone to harness the power of the latest version of AndroidTM, Android 2.1. The smartphone now offers users a galaxy of new features and an unrivalled mobile experience.

The Galaxy Spica retains all the features inherent in the successful Galaxy Spica (I5700), such as seamless connectivity and access to GoogleTM mobile services, multimedia functionality and speedy processor performance

"Lovers of the Galaxy Spica appreciated the ease with which they could access their contacts and personalise their experience – our upgraded handset offers all this and much more; a rich and rewarding and powerful mobile experience," said JK Shin, President and Head of the Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.

The upgrade will be available via PC Studio 7, Samsung's unique in-house software upgrade program. PC Studio 7 was included in the package of Galaxy Spica or can be downloaded at the Samsung mobile website (http://www.samsungmobile.com).

Enhanced User Experienced
The Galaxy Spica becomes a highly intuitive communications device offering users the option to personalise no less than nine side-scrolling screens. Users can really let their imaginations run wild, creating different home screens according to different personal interests or requirements.

The handset now features augmented reality technology that displays real-time digital information of your surroundings over the view-finder of the Galaxy Spica's 3 megapixel camera. The Galaxy Spica also features Samsung widgets, Visual bookmark and PC Sync support to enable users to synchronise their devices quickly.

Enhanced Multimedia and Messaging Functionality
The handset now comes with a number of enhanced multimedia features which transform the Galaxy Spica into a personal entertainment device. Media browser allows you to browse through your media collection with ease. The camera has been upgraded to offer enhanced picture options and viewing functionality.

Improved messaging functionality means that it is much easier to attach files to MMS and email that users can easily add contacts to messages direct from the phonebook. Improved contact management enables users to find a necessary contact very easily through the alphabetical index.

The upgrade will be available from March 2010 in Germany and gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Asia, Africa and rest of the world

New PC studio is the latest version of pc studio 7. I couldn't find a newer version of PC studio 7 since august 2008. Therefore New PC studio came along with Device is the right candidate.

I have tried installing the
(1) "New PC Studio" which came in the CD,
(2) Samsung Kies which I donwloaded from Samung's support page for i5700
(3) Samsung PC Studio 7. (Downloaded from :: Mobile Exciting!! - Samsung Mobile ::)
I cannot connect the phone via any of these software. The only thing I get with the Kies AND PC Studio 7 is that it recognizes the SD Card as a drive and I can see the contents. (My Photos, etc).

I computer detects the phone correctly Samsung Android.

Any idea anybody who has connected to PC to this phone via usb ?

I cannot get the upgrade to 2.1 if I cannot connect

First uninstall your samsung PC studio& Kies then goto Add remove program and remove anything start with samsung (do not remove your display driver if the monitor is samsung :-)). If your OS is vista you can sort installed component based on date so you can easely figure out the drivers to be uninstalled depending on the date.

Download New PC studio released for samsung corby(or any new model) version would be something like 1.4.0.xxxx. Install this version and your phone will be detected.

Here is the link from where I downloaded the PC studio (under the Software tab)

Last version of PC studio 7 was released in 2008, later NEW PC Studio came. GSMArena pick this from samsung press release( they do not know what product they have), this might be a mistake in press release or I may be wrong :-)

Intriguing !!

I got the PC Studio 7 from Softpedia

Download Samsung PC Studio 7.2.24.9 - Allows you to manage your Samsung mobile phone data. - Softpedia

It says last updated December 28th, 2009 so I presumed its new.

I tried to instal:
- New PC Studio v.1.3.0.IJ1 that came with CD (also installed Samsung USB Driver Installer that came in CD and needs NPC installed prior)
- New PC Studio v.1.4.0.IL1 (with and without USB driver) latest version I could find
- Kies v.1.5.0.10024_74 latest version I could find
- Samsung PC Studio v.7.2.24.9 latest version I could find
- Samsung PC Studio v.321_GL6 (looks different than the above one)

Every installation was clean, removed many times everything from Add Remove program and the register.

Nothing works. Only as removable drive.

Have you unchecked "Settings>>About phone>>Additional settings >>Mass storage only" before connecting the mobile with your PC?

Yes I have.

Also tried in Settings>>Applications>>Development>>USB debugging both settings on every install just to be sure.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I have Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.

What exactly did you get on the disk that came with the phone?

Because that is all I need, just to be able to update the phone when 2.1 comes.

Ok, I cleaned up everything starting with Samsung & did a fresh install of New PC Studio Ver 1.4.0 IL5 (got it from Samsung India site Support page for I7500).

It detects the phone and SD Card is showing correctly however it says for I5700 only option available in PC Studio is Update. Unfortunately I am behind firewall here so unable to connect to update servers. Will try again later when I go back home.

Fingers crossed hoping that I can get the 2.1 upgrade tonight !!!!
Cheers

Got it to recognise the phone via NPS (v1.4.0 IL5) - latest one from samsung website.

It says that the phone only supports the update operation however when you try to update you get an error that the device isn't supported.

Sounds like it's just a waiting game now.

I went through all of that yesterday and decided i cant be bothered to wait for samsung to update either of its NPS or KIES so i flashed the latest 2.1 firmware in with Odin. Lets just say im a very happy customer! Ive only been using it today but it seems very stable. It booted in german but i changed it to english and its all cool!

I think I'll give it a few days first.

Would be much happier flashing it myself now rather than a few weeks ago though as the firmware that's around is much more likely to be production quality.

Yea why not wait. I dont really know how samsung deals with their updates so i just jumped in. My fone was an upgrade so i was willing to take the risk. 2.1 is pretty amazing compared to 1.5. More home screens than i know wat to do with and theres an equalizer on the music player which ive been waiting for. Theres also a bunch of new samsung widgets. If anyone wants to know anything just ask

I'm getting this message now as well. Disabled my firewall temporarily as well just to make sure its not my PC at fault.

Just have to hope that it will connect eventually and that it finds new firmware when it actually does manage to connect.

Hmm... I might ring up Samsung and see if they have a date yet. The fact is that I haven't even seen anyone get an official 2.1 update in Germany yet, let alone the rest of the world.

Germany would be Tmobile users? Which should mean UK customers get it as well.

I am from Germany and i can connect the phone to Kies (PC Studio does not start on my Windows 7).

The phone is seen (with USB debug mode activated) with a strange IMEI 0000000000. On the phone the IMEI si correctly displayed.

Until tonight, the software said that it can not find the version to update the device, now it says i have the latest version.

Hi Dancat, so you're running an official android 2.1 updated through KIES?
then it means the JCB is the latest official rom.

Interesting thing to note, Samsung Mobile's Singapore website now has the New PC Studio 1.3.0 IJ1 as a Software download in the GalaxySpica section, only Samsung Kies was there before. Maybe you guys should check if your region's website has them up. I find it odd that it isn't version 1.4.0 though, since that seems to be the one capable of linking up to the phone properly.

No, I have the JCB installed with Odin.

I could not find wnywhere the original XXIK2 to try with that one.

The german Samsung site also has a new PC Studio, beside Kies. I will try that one and check what it says.

Same result with SAMSUNG New PC Studio, version 1.3.0 IJ1

I wonder what it might say if your phone was running android 1.5...
It could be because the official rom is the same as the one you're currently running. Just can't wait!!
