Question Samsung Galaxy Mini tether problem

Greetings android peeps,

I am in need of a certified android/general phone nerd. So here is the story:

On tuesday I go into town to purchase me a nice smartphone that will enable me to use the internet from it on other devices (i.e. a phone that doubles as a modem) I wanted this so that I can use the internet on my ipad while in college coz my college's network is a load of bull plop and won't let ipads onto it.

So I went into o2 and requested such a phone and they gave me the Sony Ericsson x8 and I toddled off home happily until to my dismay when I got there the damn thing had no such function. Thus, I annoyingly had to go into town again the following day to get a refund.

I got there and another incompetent staff member told me that all I had to do was download some software that would do the job. Went home again and checked it out (even rang Sony ericsson who told me no such software existed for that phone).

So I'm literally livid at this stage and head back yet again into town to o2 where I demand a refund and unfortunately had to buy the samsung galaxy mini (which was 20 euro more expensive) which I had researched myself to be sure that it had the tethering function. I give out crap to the guy who then has the nerve to ask me not to slate him in the survey that I would soon be sent and gives me the stupid phone after what seems like an age.

I go home and yippee! The phone has the function. Only problem is- it doesn't work!! I turn on the AP setting and my ipad and computer both recognise the mobile network but when I go to try the browser it doesn't work. Its as if the the Ipad recognises the network but no internet is coming down the pipe (which it is, it works on the phone itself).

I have no idea why I have this problem. It isn't a firewall problem and I have paid for the internet on the phone. I even sent my little super nerd bro off to try figure it out to no avail (and he usually fixes everything).

I'll be damned if I'm going back into o2 again- they know feck all, I'm amazed that they are even allowed to employed with such little product knowledge. I even rang Samsung and the guy on the other end was even more clueless. He didn't know what an ipad was!

Please can someone help me! And in non-tecky speak. I'm only marginally more competent than the folks at o2 when it comes to technology.

Thank you!!

If you are using Easytether (an app I highly recommend) then Easytether requires additional software for Samsung phones. You can download the additional software at the Easyther website.

What security have you used? Try removing it and see if the two devices can connect if its an open network. If they can, try fiddling with the security settings to see which one they can connect to. Could be a problem on the iPad or computer end. I have two friends with iPads, one cant connect to my Galaxy's WiFi, the other can without problem. Also, another friend's computer has problems connecting to mine, but for the others, no problems as well.

Do you have to use an app to tether? I was just using the function in the phone settings itself.

My phone does connect to both computer and iPad but it when you open the browser it says it isn't connected even though it is. Is that the same problem with your friend's one or does it just not connect at all?

They say connected but no internet going through. They managed to get in when I remove the password though... Then after that, even if there's a password they're able to connect.

Not really sure what you mean. Do you mean a network password to join the internet? Who is they?

Ok to make things simpler.

If I my tether hotspot from my phone has a password, some of my friends connect but arent accessing the internet. If I remove the password, they are able to access the internet.

I have been tethering my galaxy mini for months. All of a sudden I can't connect to the Internet on my laptop. Also, I only receive email on my cell when wifi is on, which wasn't the case up until now. Help!
