Problem is, this already happened once the phone came about. People are letting their actions dictate their thoughts. Is a 1.2 processor really that big of a difference vs 1.5? no. I laugh when you have people over clocking i7's for what reason?
Don't knock it until you've tried it on a dual-core phone with a large software stack running.
A 25% speed bump on a mobile dual-core processor is nothing to sneeze at, in terms of being able to switch apps and transition quickly.
I use my phone for business, not games or fps scores - I have found that, to me, that difference matters and results in less mental interruption because of fewer visually off-topic lags - and for me, that leads to an increase in productivity.
I only want to notice my work, not how well or how poorly the phone is doing it.
As far what the processor speed is - I only need my phone to be as fast or faster than me when I'm in a hurry.
Your mileage may vary.

I would take an unlocked Prime over a locked Spyder/RAZR anyday.
It comes to a point where improved specs are merely incremental until software development can catch up.
That being said, if Prime is delayed until next year and Spyder is around the corner, that's a different decision to be made. My Incredible is on its dying legs (constantly rebooting), so I will probably only last until November before upgrading. I was banking on the Galaxy 2 to come to VZW and have been saving my upgrade since July, but have restrained myself from going to the Bionic (thankfully). I can't wait forever, though.
But yeah, head-to-head, I'd take the Prime at this stage of the game. Something tells me Samsung is going to announce it, then release it very shortly afterward. If they announced it now, it'd give Apple all the time they need to look over the hardware/software and prepare a legal battle to stop its sale.
Joy.

i agree with BLD. with an Oct 18 announcement, i think we'll see the RAZR at about the same time as the Prime. when the Spyder/RAZR was initially rumored, i was figuring a Dec (or late Nov, at the earliest) release. but, i think it's coming in a couple weeks, now.
nhindian, i generally agree re: unlocked vs. bloated and Blurred. but, Moto has been promising unlockable BL's. and, given the timing of this announcement, i would venture to guess that the Spyder was Moto's candidate/submission/prototype for the Nexus (as the Vigor was HTC's). so, the Spyder could come with an unlockable BL.
an unlocked Sammy device vs. an unlockable Moto device - that's much more of a toss up, imho. and, the Spyder will get ICS, too. i've just always been a big Moto fan - so that's why i'm going to wait and make a side by side comparison.

Hints of next year's phones do nothing to pull me away from the Prime. My OG Droid is WAY overdue for retirement and she's NOT, repeat NOT, gonna wait until summer 2012 to see what the new shiny is. By then, hints of the winter superphones will be out. It just never ends! Well, hopefully MY journey will end on November 3rd.

The announcement in London supposedly has nothing to do with NP. Instead it will be about Galaxy and other devices not released in the UK yet. All you VZW people can breathe a sigh of relief.
Agree - and also it doesn't have the proper language of "company confidential" that you would expect (I also am a corporate drone for another company and there is pretty universal language you'd see on anyione's internal presentation).

You mean it's not on par with the Prime you dream of? We have no idea what the Prime will be. It could very likely have the same processor and it's rumored to have a HD pentile screen as well.
And why would it take them over a month to release the Razr? Typicaly when Verizon has a release announcement the phone is only a couple weeks away. If anything since we have no release information at all for the Prime it could be the end of Nov. That is if it's even coming to Verizon since all we have on that is rumor too.
Did Razr pass FCC already? I haven't seen that yet. If so, I can see the possibility of releasing within couple of weeks of announcement. But most sources before said Razar is supposed to be out around holiday season.
And if it's releasing so soon as you say, why there is still no solid spec on Razr? Most sources said it has qHD screen, 1.2Ghz OMAP4430, so I'm going by that. And most of all, it will have gingerbread and Blur UI even if hardware is close to Prime.

Yes, I understand it. Maybe your american sense of humor is quite different than in my region, but if someone here told me anything like Han did, could be sued. It sounds like he is laughing at me, and this is mean.

I didn't say it was releasing soon. All I did was question why you think it isn't releasing until the end of Nov. And yes you are right there aren't any solid specs on the Razr but there really aren't any solid specs on the Prime either. I also don't know if the Razr has gone through the FCC yet but apparently the Verizon version of the Prime hasn't yet. So seeing as how neither has probably gone through the FCC yet, neither has an solid, confirmed specs, neither has been officially announced (but at least the Razr has an official announcement scheduled), and neither has an official release date you can't really put one as better than the other or say one will be out way before the other. For all we know right now the HTC Vigor could be better than all of them.
To be honest my biggest interest in the Prime is coming with ICS. I think specs wise a lot of these phones will be similar, at least the Vigor and Prime will be fairly close. I'm most curious to compare the Vigor's supposed SLCD HD display vs. the Prime's AMOLED HD pentile display.

Well I have to laugh at myopic viewpoints that can't conceive of usage patterns different from their own.
Yes, if you can reduce the time it takes to render some complex scene from an hour to 45min, or speed up some complex analyses from 8hrs to 6hrs, then the overclocking could give a healthy increase in productivity.
And not everybody is gaming on low-resolution monitors, so maybe overclocking the CPU and/or GPU means the difference between playability and a slide show on someone's beautiful 30" LCD. Not to mention, maybe they have an older system and can't afford new hardware, so the only way to get decent frame rates is by overclocking.
Yes, but i'm not comparing p3s or p4s. Of the small percentage of people who overclock of that percentage, do you really think less than 5% are doing it to increase productivity? They are obsessed with numbers. They want the FPS that they'll never notice but just to brag or whathave you. The arguement then goes on with whats the point of over clocking a phone? What is so crucial that you need to shave seconds off of doing something...on a phone?

@EarlyMon: I hadn't seen all of the episodes of Cowboy Bebop until recently. Before then, I had only seen all but the last three, I'd say. Okay okay, you're right that lots of people overclock for the sake of producing big numbers that don't mean anything whatsoever in the real world. But it's harmless and not much different from people who put ginormous spoilers and fart mufflers on their civics w/o actually improving the engine or suspension.
FWIW, there are legitimate reasons to improve application response time (see here and here).

If you have a cheap contract extension available you might as well use it to save some $$$ up front, unless you expect to switch carriers and have a huge early buyout fee.
I've never been on a contract and right now it doesn't seem like I'd need one. I'm paying <10€/month, including 200MB of data (throttled to GPRS speeds afterwards). Granted I'm not a a heavy texter or using thousands of minutes. And while 200MB might seem little, I never actually got to the point of getting throttled. We'll see if that changes with the Prime, but then I can still switch to a different option for about 5€ more a month. So saving a few $$$ up front, at least for me, doesn't pay off.

I know this is all speculative. I was curious if there had been any source that had indicated it was Pentile, or if this was an assumption because the Galaxy S phones were Pentile.

Funny, we have people here freaking out over how many minutes(!) of normal usage it'll take for an LTE phone to blow Verizon's 2GB limit for new customers.
