I need a techie person to answer a question a friend posed to me. I don't know the answer to it, so I'm asking you guys.
My friend wants to be able to use the Gnex on an airplane streaming WiFi. Is there ANY way to kill the telephone radio while keeping the wiFi radio open when flying.
He wants to use is as a laptop and stream media (movies, netflix, etc.) while on an airplane, but turn the phone off so as not to break any rules.
Is this possible? Is it root only? TIA.
Your humble servant,
Steven
I am almost positive that you can have wifi on while in airplane mode.
edit: Just tested it on my og droid and confirmed it.

Yeah i just tried it on my Incredible running ICS.
Switch on Airplane mode, The switch on Wifi... The airplane mode icon will stay on and the wifi logo will appear. Connect and enjoy

You aren't allowed to use anything that transmits radio frequencies on a plane. That included wifi. You wouldn't be able to use bluetooth either. They don't want anything transmitting in such close proximity to all of their sensors as well as interfering with their communications to the ground regardless of frequency.
Edit: Guess since the airlines are now offering wifi they have changed their stance on this. Not sure how they'd be with you transmitting your own wifi though.

Actually this is a huge rumor. They actually have built in Wi-Fi on the planes now. Telephone on the other hand is another issue.
Different devices operate at highly varying frequencies.

Only true during take off and landing.

uhmmmm most airlines offer a wifi hotspot feature on the aircraft that you can pay extra to use with a device

you realize some planes offer wifi on their flights

Yes, I do now. I edited my post. Still not sure how they will be with bringing your own wifi transmission on board. They may try to limit it to their wifi hotspot only. That of course would be pretty difficult to do.

Ability to stream anything will depend on the quality of the WiFi service on the plane. I have had good and bad experiences (usually with GoGo Inflight) which I think is based on where your seat is relative to the router. I can say it's usually hard to connect even my VPN, and streaming is iffy at best because GoGO is definitely NOT high speed.

Me: I’d be more than happy to lock into a Verizon data plan now, but of course I’m waiting for the Galaxy Nexus.
VZRep: Yeah, I’ve heard that should be coming out soon.
Me: Ohh really?

VZRep: As in the 9th…I’ve been hearing the 9th.

So I gave her my number and she said she will be talking to me later this week. I’ve been mainly concerned about not getting double data, but so long as the Nexus releases by Xmas, I should be good. Of course, I want this well before the 25th, but I just get so disappointed every 2 weeks. I’m very hopeful right now for the 9th.
This is great news, especially since I live in Charlotte too.

Done with my Canon 50D & 70-200 F2.8L IS the pic below is re-sized from 4752 x 3168 to 600 x 400 to fit here.
Note the Downy Woodpecker in the center.
Picture the frame as a 4 X 8 foot sheet of plywood with the woody's head being a Quarter placed on the plywood.
This is where the more MP the better comes into play as an advantage or disadvantage according to if it contains more or less pixels.
The bottom pic is the woody's head @ 100% cropped out of the 4752 x 3168 image. The more pixels in the whole frame, the more pixels in the cropped section, the more resolution in the final product. This is how photographers check for the quality in an image from a particular device. We view it @ 100% and have a look.
Even the best camera & lens combos @ 100% are not pristine. Rarely are images used or applied @ 100%. But the pot of gold photographers seek are "Sharp Copies" of camera bodies or lenses. They are not all the same. Some come off the line tack sharp.
The examples are not the best mine can do, just a fast lean out the back door to shoot one for this demo.
Thus the more MP means just that, not necessarily a better quality camera or sensor.
So if you think your phone cam is going to replace a DSLR or decent Point & Shoot, take a shot and look at a 100% crop of a small section. This is how I will be comparing cell cameras for my post in the future.

So my friend has a nexus one on t-mobile and is ready for an upgrade and a switch in carriers. He really wants the Galaxy Nexus, soon and with subsidy, so he's ready to move to Verizon. He's politely called retail and corporate stores every day for the past couple weeks just wanting info, but getting none in return, and instead trying to be sold the razr or rezound . He, along with everyone I know who is interested in this phone, is getting a little impatient/annoyed at the lack of solid info. I think he might have had a bad day, but today he told one of the reps that "no one wants the moto razr or htc beats *ff." And that "if people did want them, why are they not nearly as vocal as the crowd that wants the Nexus?" They didn't have an answer for that one. Also, I thought his name for the Rezound was pretty funny... and apologize if that was a inappropriate.
thought I would share my awkward zed story of the day
Go to breakfast and waitress is some girl that messaged me on Okcupid that I have no interest in (and don't know IRL). So that's awkward to start, then my grandpa goes "she's a nice Jewish girl you should ask her out." How I didn't run out of the joint right then and there I don't know, at least it was the best table service I've gotten at that place

Then how about discussing what purse/bag goes with the phone???!! I've actually considered that if the GNex is too big to pocket, buying a small cross body purse to be my "phone bag"....am I completely nuts?
PS...don't ask my hubby how many purses I have! Just build me a new closet for them, k?
(Since I want it for my phone, is this on topic or off topic? )

I think a phone bag, as long it is Coach/Vuitton or similar, is just fine

And while it isn't a 'date' because neither of us has any expectations other than friendly conversation, dinner and movie I am still looking to my 'family' for opinions because it's what a woman stresses over.
I might not have all the Galaxy Nexus news - but i'll challenge anyone at fashion!
I'm going against everyone and saying wear the heels. Those are cute! However, make sure your clutch/wristlet/bag isn't as flashy as the shoes. Let the shoes be the focal point of the outfit.
In fact,a nice red or black clutch would go so well with this outfit. It's small so it won't take away from the shoes, and it will accent everything together.
Yes... I'll admit it. I'm a 26 year old male with some fashion sense. Ladies can either love it or hate it! lol

that's the purse. usually it is inside a bigger one but when I go anywhere it contains just the essentials and is easy to put on my lap
I'm going to check the 'votes' and see which shoe is liked more - I think it was the black boots. I figure if it was then if there's a next time I'll wear the heels to spice it up a little.

no fashion advice here, you wouldn't want it from me anyway.
i have never been involved in any situation that involved taking a girl out to dinner and then bringing her back to my house to watch a movie that didn't constitute a "date". many great nights have started out as nothing other than "expectations of friendly conversation."
at least you know we'll all approve of him, since he's starting with episode IV and all.
