Long time lurker figured I would join the discussion.
I also went to the Samsung store in New York this evening to get my hands on this phone. I was for the most part blown away.
The ICS OS is awesome but definitely sports a bigger learning curve then past devices.
I've been worried about this. Is this phone going to be user friendly for those that aren't tech geeks?
I think the simplest way to answer this would be to say, if you've used Android before, you will know what everything does, its just in a different order.

I think it will take some time to get used to all the features. Its not hard to use out of the box for pretty much all the main functions. Calling, SMS, etc.
But if your coming from a blackberry or iOS the learning curve will be bigger.
I really loved the on screen buttons and the ability to close applications. I hadn't figured out how to make groups of applications yet by the time I left the store.

pinch to zoom-unzoom is a multi touch function, so im sure you have done that before
Yeah...I forget what app I was in that wouldn't function with multi-touch...so it's probably app specific? I know I sound like an idiot...I do know that pinch to zoom in a multi touch feature...I just was thinking of an app I was having trouble with (I think a piano app...wouldn't let me hold one key down and press another?)

iirc from the videos i have seen, i think you just drag and drop the icons on top of one another and it puts them into groups/folders

There is a Samsung store (more like area) at the Main shopping mall (Valley Fair Mall in San Jose, CA) where they have all their products on display. I must go by and see if they put out the GNex... One can only hope.
I really really hope someone can come up with a special rom to be able to minimize the on screen buttons when ever you want. I just think it would be a cool option to have. I forgot to check while I was there but I would love to be able to go full screen on the web.

Ugh...Friday can't get here soon enough (and on top of that I have to wait an additional day to get my phone since I'm on a business/government account).
Man, that black background in the software key area is blacker than the bezel! That’s what I call true black! This is going to be one beautiful display!
S/AMOLED/+ displays are like plasma TVs in regards to black - being a light emissive technology, if you don't power the pixels at all, you get no photons (unlike backlight bleed that can happen on LCDs).

Quoted for truth and emphasis for those here new to S/AMOLED/+ type displays - unlike an LCD display that draws power over time based on the backlight setting - for these displays, the less light you output, the more battery energy you save.
(luker note - the Nexus is SAMOLED, I'm adding the slashes to cover the bases on similar OLED displays, where this all applies as well)

If I may - because those backgrounds weren't set to black, instead probably an almost black, by design.
Why they chose that is anyone's guess - to provide contrast with the buttons, maybe?

I think they deserve a chance with how well they are playing. I would rather see them play lsu rather than an lsu bama rematch.
Totally agree, and that's not taking anything away from Bama. They are an outstanding team, but we've already seen that game. Oklahoma State deserves a shot.

Like this?
Thats as full screen as you get on stock ROM, but if your looking for more with the massive screen, id say look towards a normal monitor.

Unfortunately not. This is what they look like. A lot better that HTC's mind.
I'm glad that the one with the blue LED isn't the stock one. It would be so annoying having that thing on the nightstand. Im sure its already been mentioned but the blue LED charger is more than likely a security device.
I would have preferred the security charger, only if it gave a red LED for charging and a blue one for charged. There is no way of knowing if the device is charged unless you turn the screen on. Probably my biggest gripe so far coming for a Desire.
Forget this pouch. Does anyone know/think/hope the galaxy nexus comes with one of these?
I'm hoping i can find a cool one that will fit this monstrosity of a phone. Unless the pouch i have from my nexus one will fit...
yea i like that one too. i really hope they have a google branded one. all the ones i have seen are so hideous and clunky. i just want a simple sleeve.

Just with the black strip below gone. Would be cool if it worked like video or if someone can make it work that way so you could toggle the bottom buttons to take advantage of the 4.65 beauty.
I went to the Samsung store in NYC tonight as well. My god, the phone was so beautiful and sexy. You really do have to see it to do it justice.
Just a couple of points I want to share. Some blogs (see: Boy Genius) had a bit of an issue with the size, but I found it pretty easy to use 1-handed and I have smaller-than-average hands for a guy. It's certainly a lot bigger than my D2, but it still felt really good in my hand. This was really my only major concern with the phone, so it was awesome to see that it really wasn't too big at all.
Second comment is that I thought the quality of the phone was very high, despite being made of completely plastic. It's very light, but it doesn't feel like it's made of cheap plastic or anything. The cover on the back has a very nice feel to it and I didn't feel any cheapness to the phone. Coming from a D2, I was obviously in envy of the thinness of the phone. I can't wait to get rid of my D2 hardware keyboard that I NEVER use.
The screen is just beautiful, even when it's turned off. There's just something so elegant about a completely "blank" black piece of glass with no buttons or anything with just an ever-so-slight curve.
Like I said, I've seen hundreds of pictures of the phone and read 20+ reviews, but nothing can do it justice until you see it for yourself. Hopefully, we will all get that chance in less than a week!
My gf was laughing about how I was having such a nerdgasm over the phone when we were at the store, but it's just a brilliant device. I'm so in love, I'm planning to stop in at the Samsung store tomorrow to play with it again! Can't wait!

Trust me that is enough screen real estate for most. Oh and anybody using the browser, make sure you go to Settings>Labs and select Quick Controls. You will get access to this little but extremely useful sidebar.

You are making me want to take a road trip tomorrow
To bring up the sidebar just hit the very edge of either side of the screen and drag inwards. You then have options of selecting Tabs, Address Bar, or the Options menu.

This is my biggest fear because it will be my first Android phone and I am so NOT tech smart. To fork out $300 in these economic times is a big deal for me as I know it must be for all of you, and to find myself overwhelmed and frustrated...well I'm just hoping I will figure it out. I just love everything I've read about and seen on video plus I'm counting on all your expertise.

I just want to give a special shout-out for Wilfred B, taking the time and showing the love by showing us all this cool stuff on this Saturday night.
Its 4:50 on Sunday morning here, but this thread gave me most of my info before the phone came out so i feel as if i have to give something back. This thread and a few beers keep me going

took the 10 minute trip to see the phone as well, once I heard it was there. I was down several beers but it did not take much for me to realize that this thing is just pure beauty. The wait will be so worth it to have my baby in my hands. I will cradle her like the little sloth bear that she is ..

From the FWIW department, Stopped at Bestbuy tonight w/ mt son to look at a few things and talked to the BB Mobile guy. He said they would absolutely have the SGN on Dec. 11th. I asked if he was positive, if that came officially from Verizon and he said absolutely and that he would save me one if I gave him my info.
I didn't give him my info because I want to get mine on the 8th from Verizon.
I think this supports the 11th date for BB, but I don't think it diminishes the thought that VZW stores will have it on the 8th.
