I just don't understand how alienating the tech world, and delaying contract sign-ups, including losing some people to AT&T or the other two, can be considered good for business. I know we are a small group, but it makes more sense to me to have as much upside as possible. If you have a phone ready to launch, having it sit in the warehouse does not make sense to me.

As requested by hundreds of you, I drafted up an E-Mail voicing your concerns and frustrations, E-Mailed it directly to my contacts and Verizon Wireless, and called them directly. They escalated the issue and got back to me with an answer, but one that you're not going to like.
I can provide the official statement tonight or tomorrow, but essentially it boils down to what we already know:
The Galaxy Nexus is currently undergoing rigorous testing and announcing a tentative release date that may change would be a disservice to their customers
The Galaxy Nexus WILL be released BEFORE the end of the year
I talked to them on the phone for about 30 minutes. I expressed the specific concerns. I even relayed some of the tough stuff that I don't personally agree with... the bottom line is they won't offer a launch date until they're ready. They aren't ready. When they are, they will let us know, and they'll be ready before the year is over.
My questions to you:
If you know the G-Nex will be out by year's end, why is the specific date between now and then crucially important?
If Verizon announced a release date, testing hit a hiccup and the launch was delayed, would you be more angry than if they simply told you "by the end of the year"?
Does this suffice or would you ask that I do more on behalf of our community?
I can post my complete letter here along with Verizon's Official Response once I have it. I've debated publishing this on Phandroid, along with an objective narrative that discusses the opinion of both sides, to provide a more public/visible way to have your voices heard. But in many ways that could be stirring the pot when we've already got our answer.
That being said, I haven't ruled it out as I know many people here want a venue to express their personal feelings/concerns/frustrations to Verizon. It suppose it depends on the content and tone of the response I get to this update.
NOTE: I've locked this thread temporarily to ensure it's visibility as I seek the opinions/replies of everyone involved!
This thread will be locked for one hour to let people see his reply, and take a break for a bit..
PSA:
Let me take this time to ask those who are getting a little frustrated with each other to take a step back and breathe for a minute.
Please try to take the high road. Try not to be too on-the-offensive when you know it will spark a fight. Choose your words wisely to minimize this.
Try not to react too negatively to those who are perhaps a little abrasive in their postings.
It is okay to disagree. It's okay to not believe someone. But we need to minimize the "my source is bigger than your source who is wrong more often" and the certain keywords/phrases that tend to never end too well. For example, "relax, chill out, calm down, etc" type stuff. Please do your best to not allow the flames to get bigger on your account.
If each of us try to activly remain calm and help to keep those around us calm this will be a more enjoyable experience.
Thanks for understanding!

IMO you have done more than enough to resolve our issues with a release date and don't see how any more actions will get the answer everyone is waiting for.

On a side-note, Verizon may very well consider anouncing a tentative date that could change being a disservice to their current and future customers, but absolutely no communication at all is more of a disservice, in my personal opinion. If the information you provided that VZ is really running into a bug and testing to fix it I have no problem with them delaying. That being said their communication and inability to command the message is what is hurting them right now. For better or for worse a certain fruit named tech company with their "reality distortion field" has created a gold standard in communication with end users by doing a run around the major carriers. It seems like Google pushed the Nexus program to compete with them as well as a create an Android reference device, a meter stick all other Android devices should measure up to. Google, unlike WinMo7 or Apple, has little to no control over non-Nexus devices and this leaves us with bloatware, skins like Sense and Motoblur, and often sub-par devices.
With the Galaxy Nexus we have Google, Samsung and VZ behind it. Being that the Samsung Galaxy S and S II have gotten nothing but rave reviews and became the first Android phones to pull off a hat trick (deployed on all major carriers) , Samsung have become one of the most trusted Android OEMs if not the most trusted. Like wise Google with previous nexus devices has been quick to give updates and the most competent with their OTA updates (note the Moto Droid gets it’s updates from google not VZ). That leaves VZ as both the new kid on block as far as Nexus devices and a company that has done nothing but burn whatever good will the Moto Droid launch earned them with bungled launches, bad software updates, and crappy phones loaded with bloatware.
If something went wrong with this launch, no matter who’s fault it actually was, VZ would get the blame due to past failures and track record. The fact that Google held a major launch event for the new phone and put dates on when the source code would come out set a window of expectation based on previous roll outs. If they (Samsung, Google and VZ) had any idea that would not be possible they should have said so in public. Every previous Nexus device, plus the Moto Droid and Xoom, launched or received expected updates with in a month of the Android/device release event. We also have the fact VZ passed up on the Nexus One for the HTC Incredible. All indicators put forth until the recent bug reports popped up about the sound issue pointed to VZ causing problems and put the right to bare the Nexus moniker in question.
VZ lost out not on launching the phone in a given window, but on not working hard to create a customer friendly image and due to past errors. I would not expect VZ to bite their partners and point an accusing finger at Google and Samsung over this, instead I just wish they came out and said “We know many of you are interested in the SGN and all though we don’t have a set time table for release we are working to ensure it works to the quality we expect of any device we put on our network. We hope you understand and please feel free to contact your Verizon reps if you have any questions regarding your services or other ways we can ensure you get the service you deserve as our valued customer”

Another lurker coming out of the woodwork! (I've been creeping for awhile now, 1.5 months(ish))
Normally, I would have no problem continuing to lurk, but after my experience, I feel like spreading the knowledge.
I bought the Bionic from Verizon on the 18th of October, (obviously I was unaware of both the Razr and GNEX at the time) and was happy with it until I realized the atrocious battery life and lack of internets for long periods of time. Due to these issues, I decided to return it, within my 14 day window. I bought the phone online from Verizon, and Fedex'd it back on Sunday the 30th. It was confirmed that it was delivered to the Verizon warehouse on the 2nd of November (tracking number and everything, as well as the CSR confirmation). As of now, I have NOT received my $300 refund, nor have I had my contract reset back. Any phone I wish to buy to replace the Bionic is in the $600-700 range, obviously not the two year contract price. After an hour long talk with a CSR, mind you, 12 BUSINESS days after they confirmed receiving my phone, I could not get a progress report on the status of my returned phone. Until they check everything out, they WILL NOT give you your money, upgrade status, or return your contract to its original date.
I'll call again tonight to give them a piece of my mind, but I'm warning all who plan to 'borrow' a phone till the GNEX comes out, it’s going to be AT LEAST a month till you can pay the $300 2 year contract price. If you can’t wait, then cough up pretty much $1000 dollars ($300 for the borrowed phone, and $700 for the GNEX at full retail price) in order to have it by therelease date. I'm extremely dissatisfied with their return process. Not that it really amounts to anything, but my family has been with Verizon for over 15 years and I really expected more than this.
I've had a BB Storm for over two and a half years now and it is absolutely killing me. I had a nice taste of android with the Bionic, and I want more. Maybe i'll kill two birds with one stone tonight and see if I can get any GNEX info out of a CSR....probably in vain.
I'll probably go back to lurking on my off time, I'll let anyone know when I finally get my contract and refund if you're interested.
P.S. – Ironically enough, after tens of thousands of posts gone by, my first post HAD to be right when the thread became locked. What are the odds…

my reply to Rob (it may be a little jumbled, long day at work )
My OG Droid is holding on by a thread. Many in the community and outside the community are in the same boat. It is over two years since the OG was launched. I want an unencumbered (as possible) phone experience. Verizon apparently has an exclusive on this device. Exclusivity makes companies lazy. If ATT had this same device and it was ready to go, you can bet Verizon would be more vocal at the very least, and possibly more willing to launch the device. A nexus device is not a regular phone.
The key to all of this is communication. If Verizon wants to have the Nexus as an exclusive, they should be more open. We do not know that it will be out before the end of the year, because we only have one announcement from weeks ago and then rumors of trouble since then. What if there is so much trouble with the device that it is delayed further?
If Verizon had said from the beginning that the phone was due XX/XX/XXXX, that would have put a stop to the date rumors. If they found that it couldn’t be launched at that point, sent out emails and had a PR that gave reasons and a new date I would have accepted those reasons.
Wouldn’t a pre-order be beneficial for Verizon to gauge interest in the phone and see how much stock they need? Can’t a billion dollar company devote a few employees to give updates on all of their devices in order to be more consumer friendly? How hard would it be to once a week give a short update on how things are coming along in the company, what to look for, what delays there are, etc., if they truly care about informing their customers?
A nexus device is due and we don’t know if it is exclusive to Verizon, how much storage it has, what date it will be released, how it will be released, how much it will cost, what Verizon apps will be preloaded, and I’m sure a few other pertinent questions. (sarcasm) With so many unknowns, I am shocked that the tech community is unsettled. (/sarcasm)

firstly, i would like to thank you for taking the time to reach out to VZ on our behalf. i have always loved this site, but knowing the owner would do something like that for us solidifies at as the best android related forum on the web.
while i understand VZ's lack of an internal release date prevents them from announcing one to us, i think that the majority of the posters in this thread would be happy with them simply releasing some information. just let us know what is going on. why continue to let these rumors swirl when they could clear them up?
to answer your 3 questions:
1. it is crucially important so that people with damaged/dieing phones can make a decision. i was in this boat and the lack of information is why i am now renting a razr. i also feel that is is also important because thousands of their customers have asked for it. we pay their bills, show us a little respect.
2. announce a date! if problems arise, keep us updated. once again, the lack of information here is the main cause of frustration. i would much prefer a date that gets delayed with an explanation to keeping us all in the dark.
3. with the work you have put in and the response they provided, i don't think there is anything more to be done. when you are getting the same canned responses we are with the respect and knowledge that comes with owning an android enthusiast site, there isn't much hope for the one thing we all want. INFORMATION!

I can only speak for me personally and specifically. I am currently an AT&T customer and became one because of the iPhone. I felt 2 years ago the iPhone was superior to any android phone. AT&T spent years saying neener neener we have the iPhone while Verizon invested in their infastructure. Now I feel the the androids are superior over the iPhone and Verizon has unquestionabily the best infastructure in my area for coverage and speed but they don't have the phone I want. By leaving AT&T I lose unlimited data for my whole family but Verizon softens that w/ double data for the same price plan...ok family let's go but wait where is my phone 'Oh don't worry it will be out next week.' Next week comes and goes 'Oh don't worry very soon I will let you know' and then finally today 'Yeah we don't know and by the way the double data deal is ending soon so you better get a phone'. I feel like I have had a game played with me. If from the beginning Verizon had said 12/31 for a release date I could have had all the information I needed to make an informed decision. Instead I got empty promises from sales people and a corporation that likes to play games. Make no arguement against the game, call it a marketing ploy or whatever you like but it is a corporate move to not give out too much info to their competitors or customers or whatever and I got caught in the middle. So yeah I am angry because now I am stuck with a family plan for 2 years don't know when for sure the double data deal ends or when the Gnex is coming out. Gnex released by end of the year, double data for a limited time or Gnex released 12/31 and unlimited data until 11/30. Which set of facts would you prefer in making a decision on what company to go with?

To me, the need for the Nexus is best summed up in one acronym: LTE.
My current phone is OK and not yet dying yet, I'm just sick and tired of T-Mobile's crappy coverage in my area (as well as upset about the potential merger with AT&T down the road). AT&T itself and Sprint are also bad choices right now.
I want Verizon's coverage, and since I want to switch anyway I want the best phone that will continue to get updates. A delay on that means more money going to Verizon's competitors, which neither I nor Verizon should want.
I'm fine with a (temporarily) buggy phone, especially if it has to do with calling. Ironically, I don't use my phone that much as a phone, I want to use ICS and have its features, not some Sense UI crap or Motorola's UI. So the Rezound and RAZR won't work for me, though they do look like nice phones. This probably puts me in the minority for Verizon's target users, though it's my understanding the Nexus line is supposed to be for developers, not particularly regular consumers - maybe this is a change of the target market for Google.
I signed up for the Verizon Nexus update mailing list and the only communication I've gotten so far is spam about the RAZR. I want more openness, not less. I'd understand if problems made Verizon push back their date. But to have *nothing* for this long after Google announced it last month and we were told November for release. Now it's possibly December or "end of the year". By that time it's almost Q1 and we're getting outdated technology. I just want the best phone on the best carrier for one day, and I feel like I'm being led along on some hype-machine (maybe that's in part due to my daily reading of this forum but leaks and speculation are inevitable in absence of actually talking to your customers).

First, quite honestly Verizon should not be required to announce any release date until they are ready. If they do make an official announcement and are unable to stand by that, people here will be more than mad. What has happened here over the past few months is nothing.
Second, all of the information we have been following the past few weeks is largely unofficial and not directly from Verizon. Therefore, I cannot blame them for what we all perceive as being “slow” based on all these leaks. Speculation is fun, but it’s speculation none-the-less.
The main problem that I have, and likely will not find an answer to, is why. If Verizon is dragging their feet for marketing/money-making/strategic purposes alone, I would be more upset. If other issues are delaying the release date (which for some reason I have a hard time believing), I would have no reason to complain.
Yet it is a little frustrating that the SGN is soon being released EVERYWHERE but here. Would I like to know a definite release date? Yes. But to me it matters more why we are actually sitting and waiting—I’m very willing to wait patiently if there’s a real, non-manufactured reason beyond “we’re just not ready.”
This all being said, business is business and Verizon is just another business. Will I abandon them for another carrier? Probably not since they have the best service where I live. However, after going through the whole DINC release process, this is getting a little old...
I understand this is a cut-throat competitive industry, but we just want our phone!

(note the Moto Droid gets it’s updates from google not VZ)
I believe this is incorrect. The OG Droid is getting an update soon that is currently being tested, and it's being done by Moto, not Google. Also, I seem to remember previous updates on my OG Droid taking a while because they went through Moto and VZW.

And the bug (although P3 has said it isn't a problem on the Verizon version) is only activated when on 2G networks... chances are you'll only be using 4G and 3G, but not 2G lol.

I was wondering about this phone, dreaming about it, maybe living for it. But with so many deceptions, i'm thinking to pass it off.
I need to have it on AT&T, but verizon's exclusivity is for one month (at least that was the rumor), so my best chance is to buy it at some time in january and this is very close to CES (and a bunch of new phones).
I'm sad, but i think that i wont have this phone.

I'm coming from a feature phone and am very eager to enter the smart phone world. The lack of communication is frustrating, but it's nothing to get real angry over. I'm willing to wait, and have been since February, for the best 4G smart phone to buy, and the Galaxy Nexus is just that to me. And I will continue to wait until Verizon decides to release it.

If you know the G-Nex will be out by year's end, why is the specific date between now and then crucially important?
The date is crucially important to me because the double data plan is ending this month. If the plan ran through December, there would not be any problems with the launch date. The biggest concern is from the people waiting to contract with verizon who would like to have the 4gb data along with the Gnex.

First:
Brianfizz & Zedster: Welcome to the forums! Glad you decided to join us in speculating!
Second: Rob & Phases: THANK YOU! Verizon confirmed our suspicions and said what we thought they would say. Folks, it'll be ready when it's ready and not a moment sooner. I'm sure that - at THIS point - Verizon wants to put this baby to bed as much as we want them to. Every day that goes by that Nexus isn't released is costing them money... but they want to do us right by releasing a QUALITY Nexus. I'll wait for it.
Third: I'm glad that the only two occasions this thread has been locked have been good occasions. With over 43,500 posts, it shows that we can be civilized, even with our tense emotions and angst. Happy to be a part of it.

sorry, let me be clear on that, They get their OTA updates from a google server but built by Moto. Most other phones get their updates from Verizon's servers
Also, I looked through the update ZIP for the Droid, looks like it just updates the cert store (why that is coded into the rom is beyond me, causes me more pain with self-signed certs then you can know)
