Well at least I know whatever I come home with on Friday, I'll be able to to return it for a Nexus if it comes out before Jan 15th lol I just seriously need another phone. I've been forcing my DX to go in and out of airplane mode since saturday afternoon just to get it back to 3G and wifi. Talk about a dying phone! And I wanted to use it to mess around ROMs with

Wow, a glowing review. From BGR. Here is my summary of reading between the lines:

"Still not as easy as iOS to learn, and I am used to holding a 3.5" screen phone, but otherwise this phone is better than the iPhone, in just about every way."

(When fanboys say its comparable to the iPhone, you need to read it as: "Crap, its better".)

They are waiting to get enough stock to probably make it through the storm, and are not exactly sure when they will be getting it, but right now Dec 7th (same as canada) is looking promising for a big shipment from Sammy. They ARE planning on a massive launch ad blitz, but want to make sure they don't jump the gun like the Thunderbolt, so are being tight-lipped about it. What do you think?

(Yes, my optimism has flared up again)
It's possible, but I'm still inclined to believe that VZW is holding the GNex back to keep Razr and Rezound sales from getting slaughtered.

Greetings everyone,

I have been a loooong time lurker here (since the beginning) and had a thought this morning to share. This may have been mentioned earlier in the thread or on another thread, so sorry if its repetitive. My thought is regarding Google releasing the source code for ICS when they did. I was thinking: could this be a shot at Verizon? It is curious to me that they release the code before the first ICS phone is released. Did they do this with the other Nexus phones? Not sure. But, releasing it when they did, knowing the communities appetite for quickly getting dev work out on their platform, it is not inconceivable that they wanted to leapfrog the Nexus as the first ICS phone. And, do it just as a big F U to Verizon for their shenanigans. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if we see a port of ICS for the GS2 or other competing carriers phones prior to the Nexus release.

Another point: I have no doubt that a pure Google experience, and the converse, a phone free of bloat is a hotly contested issue among the Verizon muckity mucks. Think about this: lets assume the average smartphone user spends $20 per year on Verizon bloat (my guess is it is a LOT more than that). Take the fact that Samsung has sold over 3 million GS2's since launch. That is a LOT of money made on bloat since they ALL have bloat. The Droid INC easily sold over a million units. I realize that I guessed on the $20/user, but think about all the recurring bills people get for the crapwear. The VZW navigator alone can reap over $100/year/user. CityID is another $2/month. Music, ringtones, apps, that is a LOT of lost revenue on the Nexus.

As to the delay, my guess is that the Verizon team is also sitting on a stockpile of R's. They must pre-order their inventory and it wouldnt surprise me in the least if weak sales of the R's is the real delay. This certainly would jive with Han's sisters info. If I were a betting man, i would say that they are holding off until after BF to see where there numbers stand and will then announce. After all, they MUST get this phone out before the holiday season. December 8th or the 15th seems reasonable to achieve what VZW needs to do here.

Thanks for listening!

So, to clear things up I talked with a CSR online this morning (and kept the email transcript just in case)

Chat Transcript

info: Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience.
info: You are now chatting with 'Tracy'
Tracy: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
Carl: Hello
Carl: I am pretty much set on getting a Galaxy Nexus when it comes out. My question has to do with your return policy.
Tracy: I will be happy to assist you.
Carl: I was in a chat about a week ago with a CSR and she said that I could purchase a phone now, with the current return policy, and exchange it for the Galaxy Nexus (IF it comes out before Jan 15)
Carl: But I have heard rumors online that state you only get until January 15 if you do not activate your phone.
Carl: And I just wanted to get a straight answer right from Verizon.
Tracy: You can have activated your phone, so that will not be an issue.
Carl: Okay. So, say I bought a RAZR on 11-16-11 and ACTIVATED it, I can still return it for the Galaxy Nexus (IF it is released) by January 15.
Tracy: *you can activate your phone. Sorry about the bad grammar earlier!
Carl: No problem \
Tracy: Yes, that is correct.
Carl: Okay, that is good good news.
That's the same thing I have been telling people since it started but every day some claims it to not be true and they only have 14 days...

Just to add a bit of mindless speculation, does this mean that Samsung is ready for the phone and Verizon are the people who are dragging their feet?

I seem to understand this forum does not condone discussion of tethering via hacking ware. Is this not some kind of Mal method or procedure?
Most of us just don't care honestly and taking advantage of their return policies isn't a crime. It's Verizon - they take advantage of us too - it's business. Their CEO rakes in over $20 million a year and their rates are up the wazoo. I think they're okay.

Already this year they slashed our 1 year contracts, 1 year renewals, NE2s, unlimited data, and the list goes on.. so why would we feel bad for them?

IMO there is nothing ethically wrong with rent-a-phone from Verizon. You want to test a phone that you will be paying $300 up front and $75+ bucks a month for? All the power to you.

I don't think Verizon deserves to be immune to returns/exchanges no matter what the reason for the purchase and exchange (unless it broke and you're trying to commit fraud).

--

The tethering assumption is incorrect. We've been talking about tethering and the rooted tethering apps in here for years and I haven't seen a tether thread censored. There are tons of threads on tethering and the rooted apps that allow it.

Tethering and the apps that allow it are an open discussion in all Android forums that I've frequented.

I have finally achieved some measure of inner peace re: the GNex. I was ->| |<- that close to buying the Rezound to try it, but I'm not going to. I reflected back on my history of Android phones, all but one of which have been official dev phones (ADP1, N1). They are always the best supported by modders, the CM team is getting GNexes, and I want to support open hardware. I'll just wait, double data or no. I'll keep lurking but I'm going to stop obsessing over every last bit of info. If it turns out Verizon has somehow locked the bootloader on the GNex, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. If I didn't have to switch to verizon I'd already have ordered an imported pentaband gsm GNex, probably.

How does one spend money on Verizon bloat? Serious. I've been either vanilla or ROM'd since nearly day one.

Checking in on the Nexus News, I can't believe how big of a deal the mainstream folks are making of Woz getting a GNex. Is it really that big of a deal? Do you think this news will persuade some of the iSheep to check out the GNex?

Welcome out of lurking. That is a very well thought out theory about the source code releasing. Glad you're along for the ride.

I'm inclined to believe this as well. If the RAZR had sold like hotcakes from day 1, if 11/11/11 at 11:11am would have seen packed stores, the GNex would've been out by now.

I think that the VZ bean counters have been steadily looking at the sales, and they probably have a trigger set in place, something like "GNex releases once 2 million RAZRs are sold, or on December 8, whichever comes first."

It's not impossible to imagine. Especially with the Love Tunnel saying that some were pushing really hard for this week.

Been thinking along these lines for a while now. Honestly, it makes more sense than the theory of wanting to give more time for the Razr/Rezound to sell. Regardless of when the Gnex releases, Verizon will still sell more of the other phones if that's what they want. They'll feature them in prime spots in their stores and on the web, their salespeople will 'soft sell' them (and hard sell them too) and through the droid branding, more people will ask for the razr than the gnex.

Customer: "Hey, what about that droid phone I keep hearing about?"
Verizon Sales Rep: "The Droid Razr? Right this way sir, you'll love how thin and light it is.."
Customer: "What's that phone over there?" (said while pointing to a Gnex)
Sales Rep: "Oh, that's the Galaxy Nexus. It's not a droid phone."

Ultimately, Verizon wants to sell (and lock in) the contract. They could care less about which phone they offer that you use. Once most people have seen how much more reliable the Verizon network is, they're not going anywhere else even if the other networks have what those of us here think are better phones.

What Verizon wants to avoid is the bad press that will come out over a botched launch. If they think the demand will be higher than what they (likely Google and Samsung also based on previous sales of the OG Nexus and Nexus S), perfectly reasonable for them to try to nip a potential pr problem in the bud. Especially when they have not set a solid release date so far.

*note: Yes, among those of us here and likely a few thousand others the situation now is a huge pr problem.. but we are a small minority when it comes to Verizon customers.

This has been my theory for weeks. Brings up the question....what would happen if everyone here that reads this forum and clammoring for a Nexus went and bought their beloved Razr this week? Would VZW release the Nexus? Even if I knew that the Nexus would release as a direct result of me participating in such a campaign, I don't know that I could bring myself to purchase one and give in eventhough I would know upfront I could return it the next day or week for a Nexus.

I agree with this. Bugs get worked out over OTA updates. However, I think it's very plausible, if not outright likely, that they have preset sales figures that need to be achieved before they release the Nexus (because they don't make as much money on bloat - for those of you inclined to say that a phone is a phone is a phone...I know you're out there). I don't know what that metric is, but I'd bet good money that one exists that "triggers" for lack of a better word the release of the Nexus. If they haven't hit those targets, there's zero chance it comes out black Friday weekend. Or the 8th for that matter.

Only part I'd disagree with is that I don't think the Love Tunnel is close enough to the decision makers to actually offer insightful information, but that's just my opinion.

I didn't check in yesterday, and am just catching up, But I wanted to chime in anyway on Rob's post from yesterday.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to the leadership on this site. The COMMUNICATION we get here from the leadership is exceptional. The recent interactions of the site owner Rob, the Admin Phases, and the continual support from the MOD's and Guides shows why Androidforums.com & Phandroid.com are leaders in the industry, and one of the main reasons I pony'd up the $20 to put my name in Gold. They show that they care about us and when there is something we are passionate about they're there for us and try to get us answers.

Verizon should take some notes here.

FWIW...Warning: P3Droid twitter stuff this morning:

MyDroidWorld.com posted those e-mail documents that place the GNex release on Dec. 8th.

PydePypper( I believe a TBH member) tweeted in response:
Quote:
@MyDroidWorld I wouldn't count on that from what I just heard last night.
P3Droid tweeted:
Quote:
@PydePypper I swore today I wouldnt talk about it, don't need everyone to be pissed all over again.
P3Droid also tweeted earlier that he couldn't believe it would have been six weeks before the public gets their hands on the GNex. He got his Nexus two weeks ago...

They could be still trolling like they were yesterday but would it surprise anyone if they pushed off the release yet again to 12/15?

Think about the average user. They don't even know what ROM is. They see that cool app on the phone that can do stuff and they click it. Low and behold, they get a charge on their bill that they may or may not even notice.

whats with all the talk about renting phones and the return policy?

Is it supposed to be cool these days to rip verizon off by depreciating one of their devices just because you want a new phone right now while you wait for the gn?

I seem to understand this forum does not condone discussion of tethering via hacking ware. Is this not some kind of mal method or procedure?

To me getting a device just so one can play with it will cause more harm than good. After they have had enough verizon will just massage their return policy to the point that folks with legit reason's for returning a device will suffer. And i will not blame verizon for doing it.

My guess is they will shorten it by 5 day first.

Maybe i'm missing something here.

I do not agree. It's bargaining in bad faith period. If you have a dying phone it's not a justifiable reason to rip Verizon off.

If you go to the store or the Verizon CEO and ask him if its ok for you to cycle new devices through their return policy program, see what you get.

If you were Verizon you would be screaming RAPE!

As a family member of several small businesses I see it as a cross between vandalism and theft.

I have to say last night I was watching some unboxing videos and it made me want this phone so much more. Can't wait for it to come out! Come on Black Friday release! (Fingers Crossed)

AppleInsider | Apple expected to add NFC support for iOS e-wallet transactions in 2012

Quote:
Apple is rumored to add support for near-field communications technology to iOS next year, potentially giving iPhone owners the ability to use their phone as an e-wallet for making transactions.

Smartphone makers out of Taiwan told DigiTimes on Tuesday that Apple currently plans to add NFC support to iOS in 2012, likely with the next iPhone model. That would help penetration of NFC expand from what is currently less than 10 percent of smartphones sold to more than 50 percent in the next two to three years.
I can't imagine Google not making Google Wallet readily available to download on the nexus. As the push for NFC heats up I expect Apple to find innovative uses and isheep everywhere to continue to credit Apple with all technology breakthroughs.

I agree, but I'm just being safe waiting until the 30th, I figure if it comes out the 8th, I'll still be safe either way.

PS-does anyone know if you don't activate the phone and keep it in the box, is there no restocking fee????

I was one of those people. Prior to July I had heard it but didn't know what it was.

Default Double-Data Expiration

2. In my case, I have an unlimited data plan with AT&T. I want to take advantage of the double data deal. Verizon won't tell me when it ends. If they said... DD promo goes until 1/1, I'd hold out, no doubt about it. But, with speculation that it ends as early as tomorrow, I am contemplating the rental.

Seeing this continuing concern about the expiration of the double-data promotion, I will make one final mention of my proposal that Rob consider raising this with VZW. He asked that we consider and tell him whether there was anything else we want done (his post is here), and I think that clarification on this point would be useful for the reasons I discuss here. If this issue is of interest to you, take a look. Thanks.

Just saw your comment about it being your only internet, holy moley i was about to say thats insane data usage, being your only internet then that explains it. Thank god for unlimited data, if you had a 2GB plan you would be paying 400 dollars in overages ($10 per GB over x's 40GB)
I'm still not sure how you could get 42gb of data usage on a phone in a month, even if it is your only internet service. (?)
