It should by all means still receive constant updates directly from Google after Verizon gets to take a look at them. It will still be everything that you have been waiting for. Will there be times when Google releases say Android 4.0.5 and the non-carrier GSM variant receives it first and we all sit back and wonder where our update is? You betcha.
We won't find out until it's released obviously whether this means Verizon engineers taking a quick look and giving it a thumbs up or if it means testing and the like.
So updates from Google? Yes. As soon as they're available? Untouched by VZW? No & No.
The post at DL says don't freak out, so please don't freak out or accuse me of freaking out. I just don't like that this is the case, mostly because of the 10 times I've seen updates on phandroid saying HTC has released an update for my Incredible and then not getting it until four months later because of Verizon's QC.

0.68 seconds, sir. For an android, that is nearly an eternity.
Sorry, I had to bring this thread back from the grave to point out that my paranoia was justified after all. I had a good time re-reading all the replies from the optimists who said "BRO IT'S A NEXUS" as if that meant everything would be fine.
Ah, the ol' I told you so. Yeah, I think there were a few of us who had used previous Nexus phones that were a bit "uh, what do you mean they'll have carrier apps on it and you expect the carrier to be left out of the loop on updates?" about this whole thing. Hopefully, this will end the carrier exclusive on Nexus devices. Also, coincidence on the timing of the Play inclusion of devices and this bit of news hitting?
If you look through the Google+ feed it looks like he is talking more about the zoom than anything else. Still we know that Verizon loves their testing.

I think he was talking more about the nexus, since he says I'm glad Google is back to selling phones directly after he discussed updates with carriers involved

True, but much of his discussion was about the zoom. Although it is possible that he left the Nexus alone for a reason.
