Another one I forgot about.

In Google Music there is an EQ.
Open music and start a song. Hit menu and then sound effects to get an EQ with presets and an option to customize.

Does anyone know why my people app shows a list instead of the cool metro-style big pictures? Thanks!

I follow a few people on Google+ that I never talk to. I mainly follow them because they post interesting news articles about software development, and I like reading them.

Anyway, because they were in my Google+ circle, they were appearing in my Google Talk friends list.

If you want to remove someone from your Google Talk list, follow these steps:
  1. Select the person you wish to remove. This will open up a chat window where you would normally type a message.
  2. Click the menu button (the three dots) in the top right corner.
  3. Select "Friend Info".
  4. On the bottom of the screen, you will see a "Remove" button.

I would also like to note that after I did this, I didn't see the change take place until I logged out of Google Talk and logged back in.

1. To manage all of my LED notifications, I use an app called Light Flow (I use the free version). This app allows you to set the LED color, the LED flash frequency, etc. etc.

2. To add a web page as a shortcut, first add it as a bookmark. Then you have two options:
  • If you are in the browser, go to your bookmarks, long press on the bookmark you want to add, and select "Add shortcut to home".
  • If you are at the homescreen, open your app drawer, go to the widgets section, and drag a bookmark widget to the home screen. After you do this, it will ask you to pick a bookmark you would like to use.

Hope this helps!

If you go to settings, then apps, then all, you can find the three pre-installed Verizon apps(My Verizon Mobile, Verizon Login, VZ Backup Assistant) and disable them. This will stop them from ever starting up on their own and taking up ram or processing time. This also hides them from the app drawer.

This essentially makes the phone equivalent to being completely vanilla save the few megabytes of space they take up that you'll never miss anyway, the apps are effectively gone and you can forget about them for good.

What exactly is Verizon Login? I also see it in the applications list but it doesn't show up on the app drawer.

No idea what it is exactly, I just know that it's some preinstalled Verizon thing that is not part of Android nor is it critical to the phone working right.

To anyone playing around with the Settings, I have a warning...

Under "Developer Options", do not turn on the "Show Screen Updates". The description says that it flashes areas of the screen when they update, but it caused my device to completely freak the %&$# out, so much so that I thought it was going to kill my precious baby!

Also, I can't recommend Light Flow enough.. great app. And don't be cheap, spend the $1.99 for the extra options.

I'm looking for more apps that will raise the "Wow Factor" of the phone. Anything you guys know of, new or old, that is just plain cool to show off? I mean that's pretty much all the FaceLock thing is... just a cool trick. Let me know if you can think of anything!

Click on the picture to where you can see the line of pictures below it, aka the Gallery view. Once there, the top right corner should have a trash can to delete it. It also has where you can post or send the pic as well.

Hope that helps! Here's a screenshot:

One thing I just discovered. If you are in an app(ex: phandroid app) that has the 3 dots for menu options on bottom and you hit the power button to lock the phone(while still in the app), when you hit the power again to turn phone on the 3 dots are still on bottom on the lockscreen so you can open up to the app you just left. Pretty sweat idea.

It's not strange... it's a way for VZW to make more money. "Hey, we'll make the cords look exactly the same, but we won't let the old ones work!"... sucks too, cuz I thought I was set with all my DX accessories.

I don't get it? I tested it... I see the dots both before and after I hit the power button, including on the lock screen... but I don't get what it's doing that is cool? Not trying to be a smartass, I just don't understand... did your old phone used to go back to the homepage when you locked it? maybe that's where the confusion is..

Instead of having to slide to unlock all you have to do is hit the menu buttons from on the lockscreen and it will take you back where you were. Not that big of a deal, really. Just something I noticed. Up until now I never noticed the menu dots on the lockscreen.

The dots are only on lockscreen if you locked while still in an app. If you lock the phone from the homescreen there is no dots. And no, I didnt think you were being smart ass.

Ohhh! Ok... I guess I didn't realize because I have the Face Unlock activated on mine! And i just wanted to put the smartass disclosure in my last message because I read it without it in there and it sounded like I was being rude. Just more curious than anything! I love finding out new stuff about this thing!!!

Annoyingly, the app I saw that gained the most from this was the twitter app. It seems to be pretty choppy otherwise.

If anyone didn't catch the video on Cnet, this one is pretty nice for getting you more acclimated to ICS:
Videos - Free video downloads and streaming video - CNET TV
(unfortunately, I can't seem to link directly to the video, you should be able to find it easily)

I was watching Tech News Today on UStream and they quickly mentioned something about the version of ICS that was released on the Nexus is made for the tablet? Is that correct? I am curious because one of the games I often play is very different on my Nexus than it was on my Droid X, despite it being the exact backed up copy I had previously used. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance!

I'm a little confused about all this usb cable chat... i've got a pile of cables that used to work with my HTC desire (connecting phone to computer) but now they either cause Win7 to say there is a problem with the device or only offer charging

I need to buy some more cables, how do i know which ones to purchase?

Cool tip from this video: You can take a still image while recording a video by simply tapping on what's being recorded.

Also, if you want to edit the "quick response" text messages, go to your phone dialer, go to settings, and select Quick responses. From what I can tell, you're limited to the four quick responses and have to edit the pre-existing ones.

Default How to Change Keyboards Easily

After fidgeting through the input menus and trying to long-touch an input-field in hopes of prompting a keyboard change, I finally found out how to change keyboards.

You will still have to go to the input settings menu to check-box whichever keyboards you would want selectable.

This tiny tiny icon is a keyboard and should show whenever inputting text. Pressing this will open up a prompt that only shows when you swipe down your task/system update bar.

Enjoy!

Do we need to be rooted to take screen shots? I remember reading somewhere that with ICS the screen shot feature would be built in.

I plugged the cable that came the phone into my Win7 (64bit) computer and G Nex... no issues. Granted I've only transferred one file - a ringtone - but there was no problem.

Yes me too... but of the 5 other cables i have laying around the house that i've used for the past 2 years with my HTC Desire, none of them work with the Galaxy Nexus.

Press and hold an app in the recent apps pop up to remove from that list or access the app info for force stop, uninstall, etc.

Wow. Seriously? To each their own, I suppose.

If you want to have only one screen, why don't you just make five identical screens? You would never know there are five.

Here's the only way I've found to see the RAM in use:

Settings --> (Under DEVICE) Apps --> RUNNING. RAM used vs. free is listed at the bottom of the screen.

Two questions:
1) Should I be worried that these numbers only add up to 695 on my phone?
2) Anyone know of other places to see this RAM info?

I tried this on my Nexus and all I got was a "remove" drop down.

Coming from a Blackberry, I really want a bedtime clock setting. Of course am waiting for a dock as well, cheap!

Help??

Thx

You're doing it wrong I think.
Go into your app drawer
Select Clock
Now press on the clock that pops up and hold down or just press and it will dim.

IIRC, when you swipe an app off the the recent app list it doesn't close the app, it just removes it from the list.

I have been wondering about this. Does that close the app or just remove it from recent history? How do you close an app or all the apps?

That list simply shows a history. Swiping it off the screen does not close it.

With most apps you will simply press the back button to exit the app. With many apps this will close them out or put them into a suspended state where they may be running in the background, but not using the CPU or the battery. With other apps (Pandora for example) you can hit the menu button and there will be a quit or exit option that will shut the app down. Hitting the home button does not exit an app properly and it will continue to be active in the background for a while.

It is important to understand that there are 3 main states that your average app can be in. Active which is running and using both the RAM and the CPU, Cached which uses just RAM and Off which uses neither. An app sitting in the background or cached may be taking up RAM, but still not really running or active. Many of your most commonly used apps will sit in a cached or suspended state waiting for you to open them. This allows them to open faster when you want to use them. This has caused many misunderstandings in the past for a lot of people (especially former WinMo and iPhone as well as windows users). They will think that an app sitting in the background/cached and/or taking up RAM is draining battery when it really isn't. The RAM that is being used will be released when needed.

If you want to know more about how the system works and how it handles apps and their states many of the articles on why Task Killers aren't needed will explain it in more detail than I have.

Ugh I hate it too, in fact it's the thing I hate most that I haven't seen a fix for yet in ICS... It does look like that metro windows phone look, which I abhor.

Anyone know how to not have the phone's notification go off when your listening to music? Maybe just vibrate or something?

Thanks

If you connect to a computer using the standard default MTP protocol, it will only show you some of the folders. Swipe your notification menu down and change from media device to camera. Sounds strange, but doing so lets you see the full directory structure.

I haven't played around with the actual setting yet, however when I set up my Light Flow notification settings, I made sure to uncheck the box for interrupting phone calls. Ever since (mind you only tested it maybe 5 times), the notification flashes but I don't get a sound and/or vibrate (which I could have gotten vibrate and chose not to).

This may not help during the streaming of music, but it should kill the probably during calls for you. Until someone has a better answer, I hope it helps!

Two things:

1. It took me a day to see this - there is a market icon at the top of the app drawer you can click on for quick access to the market.

2. For those new to Android, if you put a period "." before a file name or folder it will hide those files.

Not really a Nexus-specific tip, but 4G in general...I just signed up for VZW when I picked up my Nexus, but I called yesterday and added the 4G mobile hotspot which gave me unlimited data on the phone, up from 4GB!

I have heard that if you cancel hotspot unlimited data remains, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm gonna keep the hotspot for at least the first month.

I've also heard that some people have had varying degrees of success depending on the CSR, but it's probably worth a try if you are limited. Just call *611 and ask to add the "$30 4G mobile hotspot" (NOT the $20 2GB hotspot); it probably helps to not mention the word "unlimited" at all, but when they add the hotspot they'll see that they have to upgrade you to unlimited data for $29.99

ETA: I'm sure this has been mentioned many other times in other threads, but I'm also sure many people would be interested but haven't heard about it.
