Holy Smokes! High Data Usage by Android OS! [SOLVED]
Hi Everyone,
I just got a warning about my data limit from T-Mobile saying that I hit the 2Gb limit. I thought that this was kind of strange because I don't use that much data via 3g/4g because I am around WiFi most of the day!
I check the data monitor on my GNex and this is what I saw! In the space of one week, Android OS used almost a GIG of data!
Has anyone else out there had this sort of data consumption?!? Does anyone have a clue as to what could be the culprit?
Holy hungry Android. I just check my data usage for 12/19 - 1/18 (I figured month one would be highest, playing and all) and Android OS used 1.72 MB for the month!!! Are you on a custom rom or kernel

i have used about 10.5 GB from Jan 5 - Jan 26 (5.5 of it on wifi). i show my OS only taken up 22.43MB out of my data. you must have and app whether google + or photobucket that is running almost constantly in the background.
go into your apps and look at your running apps. should be able to see data usage.
also under your data usage setting, you can restict background data
No, I don't really use G+(Instant Upload is off), in fact, it's listed as using only 7.85Mb in the past month.
I am using the stock ROM and I don't use any picture services, so I really don't have a clue as to what the data hog is!
did you like JUST get your phone? if so that might all be from when google mirrors your settings from the last android you had.

in the last week I have only 8mb from android os, but the gallery app is at 154 mb. I do not have google-photos synced and I have disabled Google+. Why is gallery using so much foreground data?

If you look at my post near the top of the thread, I took the entire first month I had the phone (under the assumption you had) that it was a setup thing or just playing with a new toy. I had a ton to sync up and played a lot and i used 1.72 mb. He is nearing a gig.
Just did a check as to my data usage and Android OS has used almost 12Mb *today*, January 27th and the day is barely half over!
I really hope that I can find a reason for this!

I have a curious thought. Those with higher usages, are you using a lot of widgets or a live wallpaper that uses data. I wonder if that would show up under Android. I have a live wallpaper for Weatherbug Pro that is a doplar radar map. Its hideous but I can't imagine anything would use more data as a live walpaper. Let me turn it on for an hour or so and see what happens. As I only used ~2MB for a month, I would imagine that this would show up pretty quickly.

I got nuthin , the Android OS data usage is beyond me. Maybe a ROM dev could enlighten us. I still can't understand nearly a GB though. That is nuts.

Anything that I could think of that would be using data in the background all have listings separate from the "Android OS" listing.
It's really bizarre, but I am keeping a close eye on it. I have my reporting period set from the 27th of January and I have already used ~40Mb! Also, on WiFi, Android OS has used ~612Mb!

Yeah, I'm can't figure this on either. I tried a few different things to figure what is affecting this. It may just be that we can see what is using data now in ICS whereas before we only new how much total. I'm unlimited as well, so I am not concerned for myself. I would, however like to find an answer for our non-unlimited friends.
Ok, this is nuts! Does anyone know where and/or who I could contact about this problem? This is getting pretty serious as you can see by the screen caps below.
I need to talk to someone at Google to find out what is going on! This is going to crush my data caps in a couple of weeks!
I am encountering this same issue on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus. In about a week's time I have had the android system (specifically process android.uid.system:1000) upload over 700 MB of data on my mobile connection and over 2GB on my wifi. I am googling/posting around where ever I can but have yet to find a solution.
Do you have the Google backup feature turned on? I turned mine off right away as it was a big culprit in my battery life and I would think it would be a data hog as well.

Yes, my google backup is turned on. I wouldn't think that this feature should be using 2-300 MB per day.
Update: Disabling Google Backup fixed the data use issue. I doubt this is typical so I may re-enable at a later time to see if deleting my backup and starting over gives me a different result.

I dont know how your managing this, but remember, all the apps (google+, voice, books etc) show their own usage. currently my Android OS is at 1.78Mb after a few day... If i knew how to post a pic from work i would but i cant.
I like to have all my Google services running. And aside from maybe...battery my phone is not affected. My Google Music is however at 181Mb, therefore i pinned my favorite album.
A little help here? If I turn off 'backup data'- it says it will erase all copies of wifi passwords, bookmarks, and app data on google servers. I don't really want that to happen, do I ??

This backup is only used if you reset or buy a new phone. When you sign in again after a wipe your browser bookmarks, a list of applications previously installed and wifi passwords are restored automatically. No need to worry about turning this off.
Hello I'm new to this forum and had the same problem I did different stuff like run apps individually till I found out that playing YouTube videos was the culprit its data usage goes under android os.
had my one x about 6weeks now and its got the new European update,
last couple of days android OS has been downloading almost constantly, let it do 100mb a day then switched off network as its going to go over my 1gb per month, it never used to do this, i have turned off everything else, its just showing the OS as being the downloader, anyone any idea as to why?
thanks
rick
SGS3 - Android Gallery app just took 305mb in less than an hour.
Just had this problem with my new SGS3.. By chance I had a limit set on my data, but it still download in background 305mb.. can't find what it is. The "Sync Google Photos" and "Sync Picasa Web Albums" did not ran at all today so it's not the cause.. but I must find why it download that much on mobile data, when I was all night long on wifi so it should have download what it needs last night.
i have a razr maxx with ICS, can someone tell me how to go about turning off "backup data"? still fairly new to the phone and android so i don't know my way around it completely yet.

I really hope that the Backup Data function is the culprit. Last time i encountered this problem i had to reset my whole phone, just to get it back to normal for about a month or so...
(only made an account to comment in this debate, since i encounter the same series of problems way 2 often)

Had a similar problem, since upgrading to ICS, whenever I went from WiFi to 3G, "Android OS"/"OS services" started consuming huge amounts of data, roughly 10MB per hour.
Tried disabling sync, disabling refresh on AP mobile and all the other suggestions in this thread and nothing worked.
So I did a factory reset and this time I didn't restore everything using Titanium Backup but did everything manually. Took more time to set everything up again, but now I'm back to much less than 1MB a day from the "Android OS".
Hope it helps.

I would imagine this would happen if you restored Google apps and their data from a TiBu backup (or if you mistakenly restored system data, which you should never do). You only restore user apps and their data, and after that you then restore Google apps without their data.
My new Samsung Galaxy Exhilirate LTE phone was using up 8MB daily out of my 200MB/monthly plan. Thanks to GalaxyN and CoopeLA1 posts, I found that phone had Data Back up enabled (under Privacy setting). I disabled it and now phone system data use down to almost nil!!!! Thanks!!!!!!
