What is Wi-Fi direct?
So i'm pretty savvy when it comes to my phone, but I was browsing around the settings the other day and noticed a checkbox for "Wi-FI direct" under wireless & networks... I haven't been able to figure out what it does, good or bad, if anything. Does anyone know?

Its google's built-in "wifi tether" app. Makes your phone operate as a hotspot other devices can connect to for internet access :P

It can also allow for devices to easily connect to each other without a central router. It hasn't really taken off yet, (maybe won't) but it is used in those eye-fi sd cards that send photos etc. directly to your computer from a camera or whatever. The tech can let you connect to anything with circuits; use your phone to send photos to a digital frame over the fireplace, turn on the coffee maker, control your thermostat, all wireless.

Wifi direct is another form of bluetooth, developed by samsung only samsung devices are caple at this time. It allows you to share huge files very quickly. Try it out it actually works very well just need a second samsung device. It shows up as another share option on any file that can be shared it will be the "wifi" i attached a screen grab to show.

While Samsung may be adopting it to allow communication between its devices, the development and certification of wifi direct is handled by the Wi-Fi Alliance cited here and here.
I hope it gets used by more manufacturers, it may just kill bluetooth as it is faster and more efficient.

That's absolutely not what it is.
Wi-Fi Direct is essentially like an extension for NFC. The new Galaxy S3 for example makes an Android Beam connection using NFC but then transfers the connection to Wi-Fi Direct to finish. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Nexus lacks the apps required to use it.
