My assumption, and this is only an assumption, is that Google/Samsung work together on GSM radios, BT radios, and Wifi radios. Verizon then takes that code and makes it work for their CDMA network. I'm guessing that somewhere in that exchange is where this all went wrong.

Or, it could be that I'm obviously shooting in the dark and don't know WTF I'm talking about.
I'm sure when Verizon was changing the radios to work with their network, they probably accidentally buggered something up with Bluetooth.

I hope the next OTA will have it fixed again.
I think it's important that we make as much noise about this as possible. in all my calls to Samsung and VZW not one agent acknowledged the issue. I don't think they are aware that it's an issue and that's not good, because it might not get fixed in the next go around.

Anyone else notice that there seems to be a connection with the kind of phone on the other end of the line? There are some calls that are totally clear, and others that are almost impossible to hear.

Actually, I have. When I talk to my wife, who has an identical phone, it's pretty clear. However, when I talk to certain people, I have to go to handset or speakerphone, just to carry on a conversation.

good call. same with me. some calls are clear and trick me into thinking that the phone is fixed and with some other calls, just as mentioned, I have to bring the phone out of BT and put on handset.

I have the same issue for both BT and Battery. However, I experience oscillation without BT. Not as bad but it's still there. Use of BT compounds the problem. Talk to someone else with a Nexus/BT it's like trying to understand a conversation between goldfish.

Who do we need to contact to make sure they acknowledge it?

If you have the same issues, you should contact VZW by dialing 611 and select Tech Support.

And, contact Samsung: 1-888-987-4357 >>1 >>4 >>1

Make sure to tell them that the problem started with the 4.0.4 firmware update.

If the GSM Nexus doesn't have it, its definitely got to be the radios.

I accidentally dropped my bluetooth in the river today while I was fishing. It was the BlueAnt Q2. It had the issues with the 4.0.4 update. I'll have to get a new one now but I'm wondering if there's a bluetooth that isn't affected by the issues, or are they all?

guys, it's not the BT devices it's the damn phone. although we don't have a confirmation on the GSM, we do know it doesn't matter what type of BT device you use.

thinking about this further, why is it, in all of our posts we never discussed GSM vs. CDMA 4.0.4 update Bluetooth in call voice quality issue.

The radios are provider-specific, right? Is it safe to assume that it's something that needs to be resolved on Verizon's end?

Phone specific. But in our case, it would be Verizon Galaxy Nexus specific.

So sick of the BT issues. So, I was playing around with going back to wired ear buds and headsets and then realizing that all my old ones are 2.5mm. I called local Radio Shack and they were out of 2.5>3.5 adapters.

So, I started doing a test. I made a call to my business voice mail and tested the sound quality coming from the Bluetooth and the Speakerphone while being about 3 feet away from the phone.

1- My voice on Bluetooth sounded OK, but a bit choppy and a bit too digitized.
2- My voice on the Speakerphone was excellent, loud, very clear, not choppy at all and not with too much echo that is common with speakerphone use. Really impressed by it.

So, I decided against using a wired headset (since it would mean I'd have to carry the phone with me around the apt anyway) and just use the Speakerphone when I have to.

Hi, a bit of an update for you. On July 21 I mailed two letters via snail mail to the VPs of customer service and consumer relations at Samsung and VZW. I explained the problem that I am having with my SGN VZW and provided a link to this thread. No reply as of yet. I am a consultant to corporations and I know first hand that snail mail actually gets a lot of attention and it's not ignored. Hoping for a resolution.

I wish VZW would release Jelly Bean soon.

I actually have a GSM Nexus now so sorry I can't test it out for you guys. I can tell you that I have no issues with BT audio quality on the GSM model from Google.

I just got a rather what I would call insulting email from a higherup in the VZW echelon. They certainly need a lesson in how to communicate with their better customers. I have been with them for about 13 years. I pay my bills on time, I buy their most expensive phones.

the core of the letter is that, they would offer me a one time refurbished Motorola Razr. Take or leave it.

What an insult. This is like Mercedes customer service would say, sorry you are having trouble with one of our S Class, we are willing to offer you a Honda Civic certified preowned.

Disgusting.

The first thought that I had after reading that note from a so called Executive Correspondent was that VZW I am switching to another carrier. Arrogant penny pinchers with no sense of customer service.

I don't think they give a damn about this problem. it's obvious. it's been going on for two months, they have no interest in knowing about it and offering a single solution. they probably think soon SGN will be old news and it will go away by itself. typical!

I too had noticed poor bluetooth quality on the 4.0.4 radios; flashed back to the previous radios which improved the bluetooth audio but brought back the 3g drops and handoff issues. Since installing the new JB radios, the drops/handoffs are much improved, as is the bluetooth audio quality (based on about 4 calls yesterday in my car). Seems to be the best of both worlds so far.

Excellent! Trooper and I both realized that the 4.0.2 radios were not giving BT issues and the 4.0.4 were, so good to see that this is confirmed across several people.

Of course, he was a quitter and went to GSM Nexus... :P

Has anyone tested the brand new (unofficial) Verizon update from Google that came out a couple days ago to see if this particular problem has been resolved? Is that the version you guys are talking about testing?

Yup, that is the radio update I am referring to. Seems to have improved the volume a lot.

I switched to gsm for multiple reasons. No regrets either.

I'd love to see your reason list, besides VZW screwing up something so simple...

Do we know for sure if the 4.1 SGN VZW really fixes the bluetooth in call sound quality issue or at the least improves it?

i guess no reply to my last query.

well I have two new points.

1. I am not getting anywhere with VZW about my issue.

2. I am noticing that my BT range has been cut in half. Really I walk away from the phone 12 feet, it starts to get staticy....

time to either switch carriers or just get a new phone.

I am out of solutions here....

Sorry man, still have it in my email to respond. My short answer is that the BT volume is better. I still need to do some quality checks, but so far, no one is talking through water.

However, I have been fighting an LTE and CDMA drop issue, so until I get some stuff resolved, the jury is still out for me.

I have the same question and was hoping someone would answer. I hope we don't end up getting another defective OTA with bluetooth issues still intact, especially since it worked fine in the previous version.

I am sorry to report that the Bluetooth in call sound quality has not improved at all since Jelly Bean 4.1. This is very disappointing!

i've checked in on this thread every now and then, but it doesn't seem to be gaining much traction with the community as a whole. seems like a weird issue that affects a very small subset of users. a poll might give better insight on the pervasiveness?

i for one haven't had this issue (on ics or jb) and i use a two different motorola bt headsets. a h730 for around 1-3 hrs of work calls daily. an s9 when at the gym to listen to music (also has phone call features).

there must be some other combination of issues that causes this to happen. has anyone tried to narrow it down to type of connection perhaps? only on wifi, 3g, 4g, etc?

i have a vzw galaxy nexus fwiw...
