Default New Note won't restart

Today my one-week-new Note 10.1 has stopped responding. I'd had it on charge overnight last night, was using it this morning off charge and it was working fine. Came back to see it dark on the table, figured the screensaver had kicked in. When I tried to turn it back on, there was no response. Thinking that just *possibly* I had not properly plugged it in to recharge overnight, I plugged it back in and tried to turn it back on; I saw the blue battery image circulating as if it were recharging. Then the image swapped between that and another image of a battery superimposed with a yellow triangle containing a ! and with what looked like a temperature indicator below it. I unplugged the charger again, thinking I might be overheating it (although it did not feel remotely warm), and since then I've gotten no response at all from it. Nothing when I try to power on (either on or off charge), and nothing when I hold the power/restart button in for 10+ seconds (either on or off charge).

Enlightenment, anyone?

(And thanks to people who helped me with new-owner questions last week! I hope your replies don't turn out to be wasted...)

Edit to add:
I visited this thread and tried the method described there (hold power button in for 30 seconds while also touching screen) both off- and on-charge and there was no response.

Further edit:
I also have a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone which has a USB end near the plug on its charger. I decided to remove the USB connector from the working S2 charger and try inserting the USB end of the Note's charger into it, avoiding the plug part in case that's broken. Unfortunately, no new data.
(1) plugged USB end into S2 charger and connected: no response
(2) waited to see if any response: no response
(3) pressed and held power button for 10 secs: no response
(4) pressed and held power button for 30 secs while touching screen: no response

ANOTHER edit:
I tried to follow the directions for a hard reset, but step 2 says to hold down the Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the logo appears, at which time you release the Power button in step 3. Even after holding them simultaneously for 2 minutes, no logo appears, nothing happens, so I can't go on to step 3. I'm placing a service request with Samsung; since we haven't even had this thing one week, I'm hoping it's still under warranty (it had better be!).

This happened to me with one of my tablets and I followed every bit of advice I could read. As a last resort I sat down and just held the power button for a ridiculously long time and eventually it rebooted. I think it was somewhere between 15-20 min.

Well, I got a return authorization for repair or replacement... except they insisted that if it needed to be replaced, they'd send us a factory refurb. Um... no. We would never have chosen to pay list price for a refurb, and our barely-used tablet dying after 1 week of almost no use would be cause to claim "lemon law" for a replacement... which would be unlikely to arrive before an upcoming trip, which is why we bought it in the first place (to avoid having to carry a laptop).

Today (first available weekday), I called Samsung headquarters and asked to escalate to someone who could listen to me. While I was on hold "for a manager in the Escalation Department of the President" (?!), I idly pressed the power button on the Note and... IT TURNED ON.

I hung up on the phonecall but now I'm wondering if I can trust it to be reliable. My husband says he's read about problems with the Note if you keep it fully charged or close-to-fully-charged. Maybe sitting for 2 days without fiddling with the power buttons etc was enough to discharge it sufficiently that it would start up?

Is this experience common? How far should I let it discharge before plugging it in again overnight?

EDIT: Well, it turned on 3 times, but now it doesn't turn on any more. Also, each time I reset the date/time, but when it turns itself on it insists it is 4:00pm on Dec 31, 2011. I think we got a lemon.

I think so too; I'm thinking either the button or the battery is flaky or an internal connection (wire, solder joint) is flaky.

Can you completely return it at your place of purchase? (and subsequently buy another--because there is no way I would accept a refurb within the first 30 days)

I wish I could, Rolo42 -- I bought it directly from Samsung online and it is they who are insisting my only option is a refurb. I keep trying to get the "escalation team" on the phone but they are not responsive. Thanks for your thoughts...

I finally bit the bullet and kept calling various Samsung customer service numbers until someone authorized a return for full credit. The lemon will go in the mail tomorrow. Time to go to a bricks-and-mortar store to see if I can find something else to buy from a local retailer. Anyone have any recommendations? I sure did like that Note 10.1, but I'm a bit wary of trying again with another one....

Try another Note. It's an awesome tablet and chances are very high you may not have any issues with the new one. If by any chance you do, the return of it is a receipt away.

Glad you could return it; that was bogus.

Best Buy has a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy and you aren't really going to get it cheaper anywhere else. Seriously, you don't even have to mention why you're returning stuff.

Amazon's 30-day only works for defective items. (It's where I got mine because BBY didn't have the 32GB version in the store.)

We've just returned a dead Galaxy Note 10.1, disappointing. Exactly the same dead-is-dead as I've seen here Diane 'no logo appears, nothing happens' - best of luck with it

Luckily we got it from a large department store in Sloane Square (London UK) a couple of weeks ago and they gave us another one today without any stress at all, but the white version eek. Black leather case makes it look presentable

How dare you eek at white!!! .......j/p wi'cha
I have an affinity for white devices.
After having black for so many years I just couldn't take it any more.

Back on topic.....this issue with dead dead dead can happen with any tablet- it's not something specific to Samsung or the Note 10.1.
