I have a Galaxy Note 2 phone now and love it, but I never use the stylus. I also have an iPad the whole family uses so I want my own tablet. I really dislike the restrictions that Apple products impose like itunes, etc. So I am deciding an Android tablet for my Christmas present so I better decide and buy or order this weekend so the family can wrap it up and surprise me with it.
It's mostly for goofing around, playing games, email, movies, and web surfing on the couch. Maybe laptop replacement on trips too. Since I like my phone and the S3 before it, I thought of a galaxy first. The thing is, everything I see and read refers to the stylus. I have no need to take notes, draw, annotate, etc. I don't know if I would ever use it, so should I still consider it or go for something like a Nexus 10 or TF700?

I would probably go for a nexus 10 of not for the pen (although the note 10.1 did best the nexus 10 on most benchmarks, so it is likely a more powerful tablet)

I got the Note 10.1 back in November and use it most days for general browsing and media stuff. i hardly ever use the stylus but it suprising how it comes in handy when you need it (hovering on webiste tabs is a must!) The main reason i picked the note was purely for the reason i wont be changing my tablet like I do my phone and it needed to be more futureproof than most other tablets in form of proccessor and functions. However the only thing I think lets it down is the lower resolution screen, but watching a 1080p film on it is fine at 10.1" size.
I do like the nexus 10 but for me the Note just gets my vote, which ever you choose enjoy the freedom away from Apple!

I think the ultra high resolution screens are getting more attention than they deserve. Most of the reviews I've read say the Nexus is better due to the screen, but half of them don't even seem to actually have had both in hand. The Nexus' 2560 X 1600 seems to be designed for it's outrageous spec more than actual necessity.

Still trying to decide though....

I have a Note 10.1. If you aren't going to use the feature set it has go for the nexus 10 and get nfc. It's cheaper too.

Note 10.1 is not only about the stylus. Apart from it, it gives you all the multi window features and extra Samsung stuff, that Nexus users can only dream about.

i use the note 10 because its very powerful at multitasking. and its features are pretty cool. also looking forward to the update.

Honestly I am a little disappointed with the multi windows features. They only work with a handful of Samsung apps. I like chrome and Gmail, but multi window doesn't support them. I would have to use the Samsung versions. I'm hoping the premium suite upgrade will allow more apps to be used in multi screen.

I have the Note 10.1 and the Nexus 10. I love both, but if you are not going to use the note taking aspect of the Note 10.1 I would go with the Nexus 10. I use my Note 10.1 for school and work and the Nexus 10 for play, movies, email, etc...

You can use am OTG connector with the Nexus 10 and add storage or a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse.

You can also do this with the Note 10.1, so not sure why you would state that? Okay, maybe because you need a special OTG adapter for the Note 10.1, but the feature is there as well.

Nexus does not have standard USB either, so you need a connector too.

Tha micro USB to USB OTG adaptor was $0.83 for the Nexus 10, how much is your connector for the Note 10.1 to make it work? That is why I mentioned it it, much simpler to do on the Nexus 10.

No, but the OTG adaptor converts micro USB (which is what the Nexus 10 has) to standard USB.

Still you need a convertor, which means additional accessories.

I can hook up a wireless mouse and keyboard along with a thumb drive/memory card reader to my Nexus 10 and I need no kind of converter to do this.

What is the point of adding a mouse and keyboard to a tablet?!

That just seems to defeat the whole purpose of the compact form factor. Might as well run a tower too if you need more storage as well. Just put the monitor and keyboard and mouse on your lap, with the rest on the floor.

Each there own I guess. I bought a tablet (note 10.1) to simplify, if I wanted big storage and a mouse I would have bought a laptop.

Sorry, I might be ranting, I guess it might be nice to say you "can" add all that stuff but why?

There are times that I need to do a lot of typing on the go. That is where the keyboard and mouse come in. I take my tablet in place of a laptop now, but use a Bluetooth keyboard when on long trips, but sometimes I like the full keyboard. This makes the tablet just that much more versatile.

Ok, I get that, I think.

But a refurbished mac book air 11.6" starts at $700. It takes up way less space than a tablet plus any of your gear. Also I would suggest that buying all the extras including a tablet would probably be the same or more in total cost. Plus more batteries to manage and all the loose stuff in your bag.

Still doesn't make sense. I used apple as an example here, I'm sure there are pc alternatives as well. I toyed with the idea of a MB air. Instead I just use SwiftKey and deal with a tablet and just use it as it is instead of trying to accessorize it into a pc.

Again, to each their own. I just don't see the point of the extra gear and management.

As long as you use an extra cable and not plug the device strainght into a female USB A socket, you need a converter.

This allows me to use the tablet as a laptop in my hotel room on a trip and then "undock" it from the extra gear and take it with me, it now becomes the tablet that most intend it to be. This gives me the best of both worlds with only one device. When I take the Bluetooth keyboard it takes up very little space and I would take a mouse even if I have a laptop. I use a 64GB memory card for tha additional memory, the card reader is for if I need to get files from someone else (not used often, but there if needed at almost no extra space).

I can see your arguement, but this allows me the freedom of both a laptop and tablet on the go with one device. If i really need a computer, I can also remote to my work desktop through RDP and have full access to a PC power.

The Note comes with the pen which esentially is a mouse as it allows 'hover over' etc and you don't have to carry it with you as an extra. As for docking and keyboards you can buy either the official note dock £65! or many bluetooth keyboards which are compatible circa £15 for use at a desk as a laptop.
My view is your bound to be happy which ever you get, but people always think they got theirs for the right reasons, and they did 'their reasons!'
