How do I get the ota when I'm rooted?

You do not.

You will have to either try to install via KIES or install manually via ODIN.

Not true at all. You need to download, install and run the program called Triangle Away. It resets your flash to 0 which is the stock number. Then you can receive OTA updates. You can get the program from the link below. It works I have used it myself.

You can also install the OTA manually via CWM AFAIR.
