Which Carrier Will Allow Simultaneous Voice + Data for Note 2?
Hey guys,
My contract with AT&T is up and I'm looking to jump from the iPhone 4 to the Galaxy Note 2 once it's released. I'm not that sensitive to carriers as I live in a pretty well covered area for all carriers, but am probably leaning toward AT&T or Verizon given their LTE coverage.
Question for people - which Note 2 (AT&T or Verizon) will allow both simultaneous voice + data? I understand Verizon's CDMA typically does not allow this, but I thought I read that some phones (HTC?) did allow for this, maybe on Sprint? And my friend who has an S3 says he can on Verizon . Obviously I'm not well versed in this, but was hoping someone could provide some guidance specific to the Note 2.
Thanks guys - really pumped for this phone to get released!!!

Be warned though if you go with Sprint and not in an lte area, you'll be looking to have horrid 3g speeds opposed to at&t.

From my recollection of TV ads ATT allows it but I'm not sure if v does
Yeah I remember AT&T promoted that awhile back but I think that was before LTE hit the market in mass. So I'm not see if that still applies with LTE? Haven't seen the commercials in awhile so maybe not?

I remember the TV ads that ATT used to advertise their voice/data at the same time.
Verizon does have that capability so long as you are in a 4G area on a 4G device. You cannot do voice/data at the same time with 3G on Verizon. Only 4G.
Here's a Tweet from Verizon support also confirming it:

Thank you sir - this is the answer I was looking for. Makes sense -I've used a 3G Verizon phone before but could not do voice an data at same time. Great to know that you can on 4g!
with LTE.. most phones on any carrier can do both Voice and LTE at the same time. because they where separate radios.
but i understand/read .. iphone 5 can not do LTE and voice. it drops back to 3G.
i have heard that the GS3 can do both LTE / 3G and voice
so I am going to guess the NOTE 2 can.
Yep,from my research, it seems the iphone 5 CANNOT do voice + data on LTE. Apple made this decision, mainly due to the fact they would have to install another antennae in order for it to work (guess they didn't have room or was too expensive?)
I checked with a friend and his Galaxy S3 can indeed to voice and data at the same time on Verizon. I forgot to ask him if that was only on 4G, but I'm guessing it was as Verizon has good coverage in LA. Funny - he was planning to switch to the iPhone 5 from the Galaxy S 3 (long story - his family members abroad use iMessage) but nixed it when he found out that iphone can't do voice+data. So yeah, I'm making the same leap - if the Galaxy S3 can do it, I'm guessing the Note 2 can too!
My T-mobile Note II does calls and 4G simultaneously.
HTH.

Though the OP probably bought his phone weeks ago on one of the carriers he/she was interested as stated above, I want to second this here in the NYC area.
It all depends on what device you get. The GS3 on Verizon and Sprint can do voice & data on 3G because there is a certain chip in them that allow it, just like the the Evo 4G LTE on Sprint. At&t and T-Mobile both will almost always allow data and voice at the same time no matter what device you get. And with Verizon, I would say that almost all of the 4G LTE devices can as long as they are connected to 4G LTE and not 3G (aside from the GS3). I actually came across this thread looking to see if the Sprint Galaxy Note 2 can do voice and data at the same time on 3G like the GS3 and Evo 4G LTE, but from what I've found it cannot, at least not on Sprint.

AT&T does simultaneous voice and data in about 97% of their coverage.
There are still some (very few and in remote areas) spots that have EDGE only and those would not support simultaneous voice and data.
