Default Verizon home button - first world problems?

I'm sure some of you will feel the need to flame me for this, but as I've been scouring this forum for updates on the release date, I've seen a lot of rage about the Verizon logo seeming to be on the home button, and people saying that was going to make them not buy the Note 2..... seriously?

I had the Samsung Instict (terrible... iPhone killer my ass), then the EVO (great, but the WiMax network was good for about 5 minutes), currently use the Samsung Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play store (great, but I'm on t-Mobile's HSPA+, which is cheap but not strong and I lose signal totally on road trips).

I seriously cannot wait for the Note 2 and to switch to Verizon because thay have the best average 3G and 4G UL/DL speeds in the areas I live and work, the lowest dropped calls, the lowest %failed of downloads, etc etc after doing my research. Yeah, I get it, the logo is a branding thing so people see you're on Verizon and it's ugly, but enough to make you change carrier or get a different phone? Blows my mind....

It wouldn't make me change carrier personally, but it confirms my belief that Verizon ruins everything. I'm sticking to AT&T for now.

It just looks ugly. Its a terrible spot for it.

There is absolutely 0 need for the carriers to brand the devices.

except coverage. I've been in at least 8 states with verizon and coverage has been amazing. Only place in the last couple of years (maybe fixed now) was spotty coverage in Corpus Christi, TX, on a naval base, inside of buildings. I've had essentiallly 100% coverage EVERYWHERE else in the states I've traveled. 4G can be flaky on the Bionic from time to time, but that's the phone/OS. I've had 3 bionics. first one couldn't hold onto 4G hardly at all. second one was fantastic for about four months. then it started having issues with 4G. current bionic is doing OK on 4G and like all of them, never drops/misses a call (except in Corpus).

Can't argue that. I spend my time between Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington DC/NOVA so I rarely have to worry about coverage no matter which carrier I'm on. Huuuuuge market here.

Well, it's ugly. And why shouldn't people complain about it? If they keep quiet, Verizon might think that people actually like it and who knows where they'll stick that logo next.

As an international user, it seems to me that US carriers are very complicated...

Agree. Some people want their phone to be nice and clean without ugly logos all over it. And I get that other people don't care. What I don't get is people complaining about other people complaining about it. Talk about first world problems.

You found your way to a mobile phone forum and were surprised to see people discussing what they like or don't like about a phone? If you think a topic is unnecessary, just don't read it. No reason to discourage discussion about a device, which is why we are all here

Guess my OP was tl;dr for a few.

Agreed, ugly and unnecessary. But while in a release date thread - not a branding thread - multiple posts threatening to not get the Note or switch off Verizon because of that logo. THAT was my point.

Sorry but that shows a complete lack of understanding of branding, marketing and such. I don't like it but I certainly understand why it's important to them.

Or, do what I did and make the dealer take the badges off before I drive off the lot (my car had stickers, not badges, but same thing)

And yeah, while it is hideous, it's Verizon so I guess that's their way of "marking their territory". I'm not too terribly opposed for branding but the VZ model looks a little uglier compared to the other carrier models.

Yes. The last time I bought a car I specifically went to a dealer that did not brand their cars.

It would be one thing if they just put their little checkmark logo subtly on there. I could probably live with that. But the logo along with Verizon crammed into that button, along with the giant Verizon 4G LTE branding on the back is a little over the top.

My EVO (ONE-X) has a small Sprint logo on the bottom rear of the device. I think that's plenty.

I have the choice to cover that up with a case if I like. You can't cover up your home button. I would personally do the modification to remove the logo

It all comes down to the principal of it. There is just no need to deface the device in such a manner. Will I still get the Note 2? Yes. I'll also look to fix it when solutions roll out. I'll also be keeping an eye on the other carriers as they build out there networks so I can see when it will be feasible to leave Verizon. I've had quite enough of their over-the-top branding. The fact they continue to force the installation of VZ Navigator on smartphones to this day is an issue. Who actually uses that? I am sick and tired of having to reset the default application everytime Google Maps gets an udate.. especially when I'm driving and need quick navigation results....not a pop up bringing the process to a halt.

Verizon need to hear it that this sort of branding is unacceptable and unattractive.

hmmm I'm sorry but I would have to agree with Rxpert and the countless others throughout this thread, and other Verizon forums etc.

Its ugly, plain and simple and there is no need to put it on the home button. Its arrogance and reeks of "I can do whatever I want and you can say crap about it."

There is basically no need for any carrier to market on the devices they sell at all. Especially if the competitors do not do it. They market plenty on mags, tv, movies and on their own website and stores. A person going into a store knows already the brand they are getting and from where they got it since they are in the store.

Anyone coming up to me asking what phone is that and where or what carrier I will gladly tell them. No need to plaster the crap and remind the one person (the owner holding the device) repeatedly where they got the phone from.

And i certainly wouldn't leave my phone laying around for too long for anyone to get close to it to tell its from Verizon.

So no, I disagree with those that don't think its much to complain about or feel that it serves a marketing purpose.

Personally, what Verizon did to its customers is downright mean and uncalled for, and I am a Sprint guy who feels this way, so I can only imagine how the true blooded Verizon customer feels.

So if they feel like complaining, its okay by me so long as it doesn't get out of hand in the forums, but if it was my carrier doing this, I would certainly bombard them thru emails, twitter, facebook, and letters so they see that their customers do not appreciate the stupid decisions they make.

It's the principle of it more than anything that will change lots of peoples minds on their purchase. And really I WOULD careless and not see it as a big deal AT ALL, IF they where plum happy to let Samsung sell a clean version of the verizon capable phone through nonVZW manipulated/marketed channels for me a VZW SERVICE customer to buy! My issue is this is them ATTEMPTING to FORCE me into advertising their service, I am PAYING a lot of money for! If I was getting a nice discount on the service or atleast given SOME variety of option to buy hardware they hadn't molested I would be FINE with whatever they did with the device that sold through their channels.

On top of all that, it's a FCC Block-C device that is SUPPOSED to be OPEN. And the Block-C network is SUPPOSED to have generic noncarrier molested CONSUMER devices available for it and so far there are NONE!!

I should add that while we should be happy they are going to carry it at all... they do need to hear from their customers as much as possible. They obviously grudgingly carry the GS3 and Note 2 because they know they will lose customers if they don't. Samsung is too big to ignore. Still... they do it with arrogance. They need to be put in their place and learn they cannot continue as they have. They must evolve or risk losing customers in droves as the other carriers catch up and service evolves to where network quality is less of an issue. It was a big change for them to adopt the DROID line... but change doesn't stop there. They simply will be unable to sustain an iron grip peddling their brand... peddle your network, not the device.

Definitely did that here!

What really bursts my bubble is that we are almost 5 years from when the 700mhz spectrum was auctioned off and almost 3 years into Verizon's use of the C-Block spectrum for their LTE network and we are still 100% unable to find a consumer device that is compatible with that network available for sale through Verizon's open device initiative that was technically launched 4.5 years ago as you can see in the article below.

This open device initiative was all a big farce as it's quite obvious any large OEM is largely banned from selling their own nonVZW branded versions of VZW branded stuff through this initiative. They basically lied when this was announced. The only seemingly consumer smartphone type device that was ever touted to eventually happen through this initiative has never seen the light of day even though it still shows up on the portal and it's manufacturer still has a website and such.

The fact of the matter is that Samsung, HTC, Moto, LG, and all the rest should be able to easily sell devices that you have ZERO Verizon software, update approval or any such nonsense happening if they were sold after esn and imei's and such were passed through this portal setup rather than through verizon retail effort. They are not for the simple fact Verizon does not want them to be. If you were samsung, what would have against a few VZW configured devices getting sold unlocked from Amazon or where ever with no verizon branding?? The only thing it would change is that software updates could be pushed like it was an international unlocked phone at some point before VZW had approved what you were working on for the VZW molested ones. These would have not verizon branding or software and really the only difference other than that would be you couldn't get them at subsidized prices.

Yes it's ugly. But seriously guys - is anybody surprised they did this? This I is SO stereotypical Verizon - (1) releasing it later than everybody else and (2) stamping their stupid logo all over the phone.

C'mon - I know half of you expected this...

I for one don't really care. It's a phone - I want it to work well and function. Yes is prefer not to have the logo but whoopdie doo - it's still a great phone.

Exactly. After learning you can't surf the web & talk on the Note 2 at the same time w/ the Sprint version, but you can on the Verizon Note 2...complaining about logo on the home button should be the least of our concerns that this point. I'd rather have all the features we can possibly have on this device w/ the logo, then not have the features & no logo.

Why can't you on the sprint version? That makes no sense to me.

Their other phones have it

Yeah, the Sprint version does not have SVDO (see external link) and looking over the FCC docs for the Verizon unit it does.

In the Sprint section I posted the photo of the International version that has numerous pins. I'll post it below as well. There are two pins close to where the SIM card is. Those are for NFC, then you see two more at the right of the battery. I am assuming these pins are for wireless charging. Look at the Verizon version and if if has the extra pins, then yes, if they don't then no. (Providing someone has one to open up)

This is the International version, see the extra pins.

It also has a round thingy. Anyone know what that might be?

The round thingy looks like a small coaxial connector. These are usually used to connect an external antenna or a scope/meter, mainly for testing & troubleshooting.

I could be wrong, so if anyone else knows for sure, please chime in.

It's for testing the radio. While it is in line with the internal antenna, it's best to not attach an external antenna to it. It is possible to fry the radio pretty easily doing this.

And as trivial as it is, I guarantee they had to pay extra and change the manufacturing process to accommodate it!
Really! even if it was .001 cents to do it times 10,000 devices, they paid to have it done! Stupid VZW.
Especially if the phone is on all other providers, do you think someone will go, VZW on the button, guess it's a VZW exclusive. I'll go to VZW from provider whoever so I can have this phone? Maybe.

This is from Spigen 3-pack? Btw, for anybody interested MIME offers a different color (silver, black, gold, pink) home replacement aluminum buttons for $2.50 each: Aluminum Home Button for Note 2 MIME USA . With shipping it adds up to $5.74, but still cheaper than paying $10 for Spigen 3-pack if you only after one color.
