Yeah, I wasn't planning on rooting my phone. I had no reason to until I heard about this. After reading about the issue, I rooted and applied the patch. I'm interested in seeing how fast Samsung addresses this serious security issue.

Also, the article states that using the patch breaks the camera. I have the Verizon version and both front and rear camera work fine after using the patch.

Edit: I did find out that if you apply this patch you will have to disable Exynos Aubse when you want to use hdmi. You can reenable it when you're done with your hdmi session.

Did the apk root the phone ok? If so seems to be by far the easiest way to get rooted. .

Yes rooted it and fixed the exploit. Easiest root method I've ever used and I've used a few..

Just rooted my phone. Ridiculously easy. Cameras still work. (Int. N2) Status gone to modified, but is reversible. The whole process after downloading the apk from chainfire at XDA took about 1.5 secs! Just shows how bad the possible exploit is.
