Default Review of ZeroLemon 9300 mAh extended battery for Note 2 w/pics!!!

This is a review of ZeroLemon 9300 mAh extended battery for Note 2: ZeroLemon

When life gives you lemons - you make lemonade. When life gives you ZeroLemon 9300 mAh extended battery - you put it in the charger for 12 hours prior to initial use The long anticipated 9300 mAh extended battery for Note 2 is here!!! And for $39.99 including TPU case - you are getting a triple capacity of Samsung OEM 3100 mAh battery. This is a first part of my review where I will go over the battery, the case, the fitment, and comparison details. Due to capacity of this battery and requirement of a few charge cycles, the performance part of the review will follow in a few days. I'm also planning to use my VA battery monitor setup to measure externally the exact capacity of this battery.

So let's start with dimensions to give you an idea of how triple capacity translates into footprint increase. Just for the reference, original Samsung OEM 3100 mAh battery is 75 mm x 56 mm x 5.6 mm (2.95" x 2.18" x 0.22") and weight of 54g (1.9oz). The new ZL9300 is 110.8 mm x 71.6 mm x 6.2 mm (thinner side) / 12.9 mm (stacked up side) -> 4.36" x 2.82" x 0.24" (thin) / 0.5" (thicker side). The weight of ZL9300 is 166g (5.9oz), and together with TPU case your Note 2 will clock in at 330g (11.7oz). It obviously makes phone heavier and beefier in your hand, but dimensions with TPU cases are as thick/wide as Defender and length wise even shorter. I use Defender as a comparison also for a reason since this case is a very popular mod for extended batteries, and I'm planning to modify my "real" Defender for that purpose. Comparison pictures included below.

Now to the battery itself. It looks like a regular size battery stacked on top of a longer thinner plate which most like host 2/3 of the total capacity. As I mentioned above, verification of capacity will take time since we are dealing with 9300 mAh battery where charging and discharging (use) takes time hopefully measured in days (for use) rather than hours. In this particular case due to its dimensions it obviously makes no sense to have battery cover - as a matter of fact it would have been impossible to include cover. Instead, ZeroLemon designed TPU case that serves a purpose of both battery cover and some basic protection. Unfortunately, NFC is not included. The case itself is made out of typical semi-rigid material and has a very nice fitment with a phone, although you do get some pulling around sides typical for TPU material. The history of this ZL9300 release is that battery was available awhile ago but initial batch of TPU cases was loose, so the decision was made to delay the release in order to fix the problem and to deliver 100% finished product. The finish of TPU case is matte with a nice non-slip grippy texture that feels good in your hand and will provide some friction on the surface. Very important since due to increased size and weight you would want to have a better grip. It also offers edge/lip for a screen protection when placed down but I wish it would have been bigger. As a bare minimum it will work, but for example in my case where I use tempered glass on my screen - the lip is almost the same depth as a thickness of my tempered glass protector. If I place it down on the flat surface I might have a micron of clearance, but this problem is ONLY in my case because I use a thick tempered glass protector. For anybody with a typical PET film protector you should have more clearance. All the port openings are perfectly aligned, from micro-usb port, to s-pen opening, mic, headphone, camera and flash opening (partitioned in a nice way). I have to mention about the speaker in the back - since TPU cover will not be flush with a speaker, inside of the case there is a partition to isolate and direct sound to speaker cutout in TPU case. Nice design detail! Power and volume up/down buttons are separated and easy to press with a nice tactile feedback.

As a bare minimum this TPU case is pretty good considering you are getting a decent grip and basic protection right out of the box. Also, ZeroLemon made clear they are working on a rugged case to be available sometime during the summer. This is a huge plus!!! Of course, for those who can't wait, you can always do a popular Defender case mode to cut out back panel of it's inner plastic shelf and use external rubber layer on top. I will plan to do it myself as well. Furthermore, if you are curious about using this case in the car, I confirmed and included pictures of Arkon mega-grip mount to work perfectly with it. The only other comment I have is that I hope ZeroLemon will consider making an external battery charger for ZL9300. Typically you would want to charge this battery overnight, but if you run out of "lemon" juice during the day - if you swap with another battery, you don't have other way to charge this extended battery, unless you find some off-the shelf charger (and even those are typically 350mA-500mA that take forever).

Right now, I'm putting my battery on the charger and will keep it for awhile before I'm going to start doing my testing. But in a meantime, enjoy these pictures:

I'm still running stress test to drain down the battery. Received it yesterday, was at 60% from the box. Charged it up to 100% and then kept it on for another 5hr even after green light indicator went on. I can't sit all day and use it continuously, so I'm running Nova Battery Tester benchmark app. As I mentioned before, it doesn't provide the exact accurate reading of the mAh, but does it's calculation by running a very CPU-intense stress test at full max brightness and everything on (except 4G) for about 2hr at a time while monitoring battery discharge. This is more vigorous than a regular use and I already ran 6 full cycles with battery down to 35% now. I will continue running it down to 2% or so. What I found is that reported mAh capacity is showing consistently 3x or more the capacity of my stock battery I ran under the same test conditions. Doesn't matter mAh reading, it's a relative test and for sure - this ZeroLemon 9300 mAh is at least 3x times the capacity of our stock Samsung 3100 mAh battery!

Here is a screen shot with Nova Batt Tester results so you can see my latest tests with ZL showing triple capacity in comparison to previous stock batt results. Once I drain my battery with Nova stress test, I will post a final screen shot of total battery run time and screen-on time.

Furthermore, I confirmed that ZeroLemon TPU case DOES fit Seidio CONVERT holster. It's not a tight fit, but since CONVERT has a spring-loaded latch which can also be locked, you can definitely use it with a good piece of mind. Here are pictures:

OK, now here is a scoop on Defender mod for ZeroLemon 9300 mAh battery. Yes, I did it, and No, I'm not too crazy about it. I was using a wireless dremel tool holding back panel of the inner plastic case in my hand while drilling with another hand. So, it was all up in the air. I could have done a better job if I had it fixed on the table. It fits for sure, but will take a little time for an outer rubber shell to stretch, I guess. As of now, power button is not easy to push, and only up volume works as expected while down volume I have to press by pushing on the case from behind the button since its not aligned perfectly. For sure, this mod will give you more protection than original TPU case from ZeroLemon, especially higher lip around the screen. And you can also use Defender holster with it, but overall it adds more bulk and fitment is not as seamless. Personally, I will give it a day or two to see how it will stretch (and keep in mind, I'm using HK version of Defender), and then will go to original TPU case. Of course, will be anxiously waiting for ZL new rugged case they are working on due this summer!!!

Here are the pictures of my ZL-Defender mod:

With Defender holster, it only fits face in (and a tight fit) and NOT face out:

.... and here is a final result of Screen-on time!!! We are talking about 20 hours of screen time with 9% still remaining!!! And, I'm not talking about 20 hours (out of 36 hours after full battery charge) of keeping screen on with some light use. About 14 hours of that time was running Nova Battery Test cpu stress test at max brightness and gps/bt on. Pure monster power!

Just got mine as well! Still kinda irked about the no NFC, but I might be picking up the mugen also. I was very surprised at how big the battery was, but I figure it's three normal batteries with two stacked.

If I would have a spare NFC (might have to pick up off ebay with a spare battery door), there is probably a way to run ribbon wires from connector points to NFC card taped to the back of the TPU case. Regarding Mugen, sorry can't justify double capacity for $105 when you can get the same double capacity battery from Anker for $17. Extra money for plastic battery cover with a kickstand and no case - have no idea how Mugen can justify the difference. Or here with ZeroLemon for $40 you get triple capacity battery with TPU case.

Oh yeah, I'd never pay 105 for the mugen. I've been looking on Craigslist and eBay for cheaper.

Twister I need a favor. In one of your post there was a link to this battery on Amazon but the description said WHITE case.
I don't know if you purchased this battery or if they sent it to you for review but is it possible to find out 2 things

  1. When will the white case be available (I detest black)?
  2. What other cases (other than Zero) fit with this battery?

I know it's confusing. I guess original plan was to have both white and black TPU cases. Very early review sample from that other link had a white TPU case, although with a poor fitment. ZL went back to redesign TPU case while holding off battery release, but only black TPU case was released. I don't have info yet about availability of the white case, will ping them again with a question.

Due to its unique size/shape, no other case will fit this battery. I even tried using ACTIVE Extended (the one Seidio makes for their Innocell battery) and it doesn't fit. The best bet, and already confirmed by others, to modify Defender where you cut out back of the inner plastic shell to fit this battery. And even with that mod I heard outer rubber shell fitment is very tight. Depending on free time, I'm probably going to do this mod today and will post pictures/comments.

Final update in Post #2, pretty much I was able to squeeze 20hr out of this battery with 9% still remaining, and we are talking about high intense stress test running for 14hr out of those 20, while the rest watching movies, using as GPS, browsing, etc.

Thanks Twist for white info!!!!

Now, I see you got 76% of screen usage. Did you click it to see what the hours of on screen time was?

Yes, I posted it already right above that screen shot with another screen capture where I clicked on screen usage to show you I got 20 hours of screen time (and 14 hours of that time was running cpu intense stress test at full brightness).

So per Amazon the batteries are now unavailable?

Looks like sold sold out atm Probably expected with such high demand, but I'm sure they will have more in stock soon. The usual supply/demand hype of a new product

Aw, I wasn't sure. Most of the time if Amazon is sold out I've seen them put a date when they will be available. Was really hoping they saw that NFC would have made the battery almost a must have. Got my hopes up lol.

Sorry, no NFC

Here is a quote from ZL reply about NFC: "For NFC support, we have no plans on that so far as the material cost is too high to implement NFC to this (requires a special NFC design which we find too expensive)".

I received my ZeroLemon on the 19th. It really is a beast of a battery. I ordered a Seidio Active belt clip to holster my phone while it's installed. I'm currently using the seidio surface belt clip with my Hyperion extended battery with no problems.. I hoped that I could squeeze the ZeroLemon into that but no joy.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed ZL will have something with kickstand for their rugged case. For now I don't have any details, but obviously will test/review it as soon as I get my hands on it Also, as I mentioned before, they are looking into fast charging external charger for this monster battery.

Btw, I read a report about someone running a test using R/C battery analyzer, and they measured this battery to be exactly 9347 mAh.

Default External Charger MOD for ZeroLemon 9300 mAh battery w/pics!!!

From day one when I got ZeroLemon 9300 mAh battery, the question of external charger for this battery was on my mind. You get a monster capacity, but it will also take at least 3x as long to charge it up and you can only do that inside of your phone. It's OK if you run out of lemon juice and put your Note 2 on a charger overnight, but otherwise you better have a spare fully charged battery. Plus, for some of us the use of ZL battery will be not daily thing. Bottom line, external charger is a must have. I have talked to ZL support and they confirmed about looking into rapid external charger, but no details about it available yet. So I figured to try something out myself.

The challenge is that ZL battery looks like a stock footprint on top of a large plate. Most of the regular single battery charges have small footprint where they could mate with battery contacts but ZL will be top-heavy pulling out of the charger. I came across this cradle charger from Tmart.com, it's about $15 and as a bonus you can charge the battery and sync your phone. Got it from here: Twin USB Cradle with 2nd Battery Slot for Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100 - Tmart.com - they actually have it in their US warehouse so it arrived very fast. As a cradle it's OK, although just like any vertical cradle-stand it can accept only a slim case or Note 2 without a case. Also, for some reason with an included ac-adapter you can't charge at more than 500 mA (it was forcing it into USB charging mode). But that wasn't my main purpose.

In order to fit ZeroLemon, I had to modify this case where the back support of the cradle/stand had to be leveled off. Since I use dremel for my mods, I actually included a picture below for those who are interested. Using a cutting wheel to slice it off, and griding wheel to smooth out the rough edges. Turned out to be very functional! Because of the wide base of the charger/cradle, there is no wobbling or worrying the battery will pop out of the charger. The only drawback is that charging led light is covered by the battery, but if you look sideways you can actually see it: red - charging, blue - all done (I assume triggered by a target voltage when battery is fully charged). I took my depleted ZL (it was down to 3%) and set it on the charger overnight from midnight until 7:30am. I did use an included AC wall charger since I figured it said 1500 mA so it should charge it fast. In the morning popped the battery into the phone and to my surprise found it to be only at 32%. That would mean that wall charger was actually providing about 415 mA instead of 1500 mA. No surprise since you can never trust these labels. It could have been a typical 500 mA charger with some efficiency loss down to 415 mA of actual current. I decided to use my other "trusted" 2A wall charger. Kept it charging in the same setup from 10am till 1:50pm, popped it into the phone and battery went from 32% to 97% in under 4 hours!!! Which is approximately 1550 mA of supply from a wall charger, with some efficiency loss from original value. So if I would have used this wall charger from 3%, most likely I would have gotten to a full 100% charge in under 7 hours, maybe even 6 1/2 hours.

Pretty much charging circuit of that cradle/charge is able to handle high current input and can charge Zerolemon at relatively fast rate of 1500 mA supply. Plus, even after slicing a layer of back support of that cradle, I was still able to plug in the phone and charge/sync it (although through that micro-usb connector it was charging at USB rate, not AC).

Bottom line, it worked! Oh, and as a disclaimer I have to mention that I'm not responsible for any damage to your battery or your fingers if you decide to duplicate it Here are the pictures:

This battery is off the wall. Just got it on Monday, took it off the charger Tuesday around 7AM. I have not plugged it in since, and with medium usage (voice and data), it is at 37% as of Friday noon. Feels very solid. While you can pull the edges away from the phone, they do not do so on their own, and have some tackiness to them. The cover allows for an excellent grip.

Default Battery % increases upon removal and replacing.

Im using zero lemon 9300mAh battery. When I remove the battery (havnt tried simply restarting), replace, and turn the phone back it jumps up about 7 to 10%. Any idea why? Or a way to fix?

Also I used my phone for light texting and like 2 phone calls over a 12 hour period and my phone stayed at 14% the entire time. When i got home, and a couple minutes of use, it dropped like 3 to 4%. How can It stay at 1 percentage point for 12 hours then do that?

Thanks for any info

I just ordered this battery today. I've been waiting on the white cover and they finally got the it up on Amazon so I jumped on it while it's currently in stock. These batteries seem to sell quicker than any battery I've ever come across.

I could have sworn I posted a new thread on what I wrote above, did it get moved into this thread or did I screw up something?

Nevermind I just saw that mod post about the merge.

Don't pay attention to % yet since it will take a few full charge cycles for battery to get calibrated.

This was on my third cycle. Im starting my fourth today. I never thought id hear my self say "this battery takes to damn long to get 4 or 5 cycles in." Lol. 3 or more days each charge and I find myself running the stress test app just to help kill the battery at night.

Just got this battery today. It's on the charger now, so tomorrow will be the first day. Really looking forward to using every feature with abandon - and not worrying about the battery! Ok, so no NFC, but like (probably) 99.9% of people out there, it's not a big deal because it's not something I use!

Just used this battery for my 4 day trip to Vegas. 300 pictures/videos and using the map to see where I was, this battery worked wonders. On day three I was at 30%. My iPhone friends had to go back to the PH to charge at least twice each day and one of them even had a mophie.

@Twist .... Is there still no external battery charger available for purchase that doesn't require a dremel?

Nothing I have found so far. Even the one from my mod, it works but after a while contacts starting to get loose (not the best quality ). ZL guys told me they are working on a fast charger, so they are aware of high demand for it. In theory, there are a lot of wall chargers that accept ZL battery because the base of it is a regular battery footprint. I'm talking about those wall chargers where the whole OEM battery fits in, not the one where half of the battery sticking out (those need a regular battery to be flipped on its back which is not possible with ZL batt). In theory those wall charges can be used if you plug them into a horizontal power strip where it's not hanging vertically off the wall. But all these offer a painfully slow 350 mA charging where you need 2000 mA (2A) to take full advantage of fast charging.

I heard the wall charger which comes with Anker (pack of 2x 3100 mAh batteries with a charger) has 1000 mA which should be great, but I still need to confirm it.

Thanks Twist. Hopefully the Anker does work. When do you think you might get confirmation?

EDIT Just rec'd battery with white case. Came 60% charged. I'm sure I read it but must have forgotten but how long does it take to fully charge?

Already I don't like that I must use my phone to charge it. Ever since the original Evo I've been saying phones are getting to be heavier than this tiny micro charging port--too much weight on it and heaven forbid this falls while plugged in.

Gonna go look at Anker chargers now.

I think their instruction is for 12hr first change, but that's really when you are fully depleted. 9300 mAh with 2000 mA (stock) wall charger - that's close to 4.65h (simple math ). I believe I kept it on for about 6 hours, even with it hit 100% I let it juice up for another 1 hour.

Sorry, didn't get confirmation from Anker yet.... Never mind, I just looked up on Amazon and was able to zoom into the back of the charger to see its 600mA for battery charging (while 1000 mA for USB port only). So that's 9300 / 600 = 15.5hr of charging ZL better hurry up with 2A wall charger!!!!

This battery would easily fit the Samsung charger if Samsung hadn't put the pins on the opposite side. The battery door on the charger comes off.

EDIT Maybe it's me but since using this battery today my abysmal 3G has increased ridiculously. I have to keep looking at the phone to see if it flipped to 4G or something.

I purchased mine based on this great review and absolutely love it. I'm on my second week with the battery and haven't had any issues yet.

I received it Saturday, April 27 and although it was at 60% charge I left it in the charger overnight. I went from Sunday morning to Friday afternoon and still had 10% charge.

Since I knew I would be heavily using the video and camera the next day, Saturday, May 4th, I put the screen brightness to full and let some movies play. I started them at 5 pm and the charge didn't get down to 3% until almost 11pm, 6 hours later!

It was fully charged the next morning and I used the phone almost continuously for almost three hours the next morning with the screen brightness at full. The charge was still at 83%. That was Saturday and right now I still have 26% charge with 4 days and 3 hours on it.

Thanks for all your great reviews twister6!

Currently I'm just under 12 hrs battery during at 48% with screen on 7.5 hrs. I'll do my screen shot when I get down to 3%.

@twister. Was that 20 hours at max brightness from full charge and just left the it on until it died? Im assuming it was because of the stress test? I ask because I use around 75% brightness and I usually get around 11 or 12 hours of screen time on and like 3 to 3.5 days on 1 charge.

My hyperion 6200 battery was getting 11 hours of screen time on at like 40% brightness and 2 to 2 5 days of use. It just doesnt seem like im getting as much out of zero lemon as I should (or at least what youre getting). It still an unstoppable battery and have no complaints.

Ill post some screen shots of my hyperion battery life and my zero lemon for comparison for any one who cares too.

I made an imgur album because the resolution wantworking when I tried to upload screenshots top this page
Hyperion imgur album (5 photos on samcharge)

Zero lemon imgur album (6 photos 2 different charges)

My stats indicate it took 12 hrs for my battery to get to 50% Another 50% would take me to 1 day on a charger. That's what I get from stock so I'm not seeing the benefit right now.

What is your screen time? I'm currently at 62% with 5 hours screen time.

Default Reception Issues?

Is anyone experiencing reception issues while using this battery?

Now that the white case is in stock I was about to jump all over it and order today. However, I just read on a few sites that people are noticing that these batteries are hampering the data/cell/wi-fi reception on their phones to varying degrees. This has given me pause, so I wanted to see if anyone here was experiencing this problem. Thanks.
