Default Wireless charging

I'm curious about peoples' thoughts on wireless charging. I'm coming from an iPhone so the whole idea is new to me.

- Is it worth the expense?

- Are there any downsides (slower charging, etc)?

- Is the special case/back bulky? Does it prevent you from using any other cases?

- Are the charging pads generic? Brand recommendations?

Thanks for any opinions!

Only you can answer that for you. For me, yes it is, although it is not cheap in any way.

Yes. Apart from the initial outlay cost, it is generally slower to charge than a regular connection wired connection. It's ideal for overnight charging in my opinion. Just lay your phone down on your bed side table and it charges.

The new Samsung S-View wireless charging case is apparently about a millimetre more bulky than the non wireless S-View case.

Yes, Qi make a generic pad that will work with the S-View case for the Note 3

Thanks Scootmien. Do you know how much the Samsung S-View Wireless Charging Case and Qi pads cost and/or best place to purchase? I've seen the case mentioned in some different areas but I can't find it on the Samsung site.

I don't know where you're based but the case is available here in the UK to pre-order from Mobilefun.co.uk at the link below. As previously mentioned, they are not cheap in any way. The Qi charging plate, which I have confirmation works with the S-View cover for the Note 3, is fortunately quite a bit cheaper. There are other wieless charging covers for the phone but I happen to like the S-View one. Check out Mobilefun as they've got them all on there.

Thanks, I see what you mean by not being super-cheap, but then again it's pretty neat tech, and I was probably going to get an S-View case anyway, so I think of the cost as incremental.

The US-version of the mobilefun site doesn't seem to have any of the Note 3 accessories yet, so I"ll probably have to wait awhile.

For wireless charging (assuming none of the providers remove the pins or block the wireless charging pins), any Qi enabled charger should work, so you don't necessarily need to get that one.

Every now and then, the sale websites have the Nokia wireless charging pad for $19.99, and that's a Qi enabled wireless charging pad.

-EDIT- And, for those of you that don't understand what I mean by "blocking the wireless charging pins", I suggest you read through the wireless charging threads in the Note 2 forums. Last year, that was a big question, when it came to the Note 2. When the International (GT-N7100) version was released, it was noted that the Qi wireless charging connectors were not built in, but it could be added, due to the wireless charging pins being exposed. Then, when the US providers (ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular) released their versions, the different carrier versions had different limitations. From what I recall, T-mobile and Sprint both had the pins covered by plastic, so one could literally cut holes in the internal plastic covering, so that the wireless charging pins would be exposed. Verizon, part of me remembers them removing the pins (but I'm not 100% sure about that). I can't remember if US Cellular was the same situation as Verizon or T-Mobile/Sprint.

Also, keep in mind that wireless charging is a much slower charging process than actually plugging the phone in to charge.

From both the T-Mobile and Sprint versions that have been reviewed, just wanted to point out that the charging pins for the Qi Wireless charging do appear to be accessible/exposed, for the possibility of swapping to a wireless charging back cover.

I'm assuming that the Qi charger will be attached to the replacement cover, so that they match directly with where the pins are located (Looking at the back of the device, while cover is off, the pins are to the left above where the battery is located).

If you're not familiar with what the pins look like, take a look at the International Galaxy Note 2 (pins were located to the right of the battery on the Note 2).

thnaks in advance for any/all info

Slow charging rates are definitely a down side, but it's a nice nuance in the instance that you're lounging at home, using the phone, but don't necessarily "need" to plug in. At least, that's how I intend on using the wireless charger.

If you get the Qi receiver that goes inside of the cover, its no thicker. the Samsung cover with the QI built in is thicker but not by much from what i have heard . there was a video clip of how the receiver goes in under the case cover, the link is in the previous message it was for a non QI charger but it installs the same way

Something to keep an eye out for in 2014

Sony wireless charging brings phone to full power in an hour

If wireless charging is capable of being that fast (much faster than a microUSB), then it might become more of a "standard."

All I'd want to see is either a Qi charging adapter that can be stuck onto an existing car mount and I'd be pretty much set.

Default QI CHARGING INITIAL Results

Using the OEM SAMSUNG QI-ENABLED BATTERY COVER:

Official Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Wireless Charging Cover - Black

With the TYLT QI CHARGER:

TYLT • VU • Wireless Charger

I'm getting a charge rate of approximately 25%/hr,which is about 1/2 the charging rate of the OEM USB 3.0 wall charger.

I can definitely live w/that,more than sufficient for overnight charging.

Got this in today as well, will give it a test tomorrow:

Similar charge rate as the TYLT CHARGER mentioned above.
This one is a bit on the big side, as it has two QI coils for simultaneously charging two devices. This could be the ideal QI charger for those who have the need & wall outlet space is at a premium. Also has a USB port to charge a 3rd device by conventional means, freeing up another wall/power strip outlet.

No,still on it's way (Tuesday,I'm guessing, left Chicago yesterday).

Qi Wireless Charger Pad for Samsung Galaxy S3 NOTE2 S4 Receiver 10000mAh Battery | eBay

For pure functionality,it's the one to get,w/the 2 USB ports & the 10kmah battery storage (to power the QI charger &/or the USB ports).

Glad I ordered when I did,the price has been jacked-up an additional $100 since I ordered this on 10/6/13.

I'm guessing the release/popularity of the GN3,w/its wireless charging capabilities & the price increase are no coincidence........

FYI, for those that wanna swoop one up, amazon has it too. It's actually very nice looking. Best part is it charges via micro usb, rather than standard ac adapter, so it's convenient.

I don't have my wireless cover yet, so I can't content on its accuracy identifying wireless charger, but I can say that it's only a little longer than the note 3, but virtually the same length.

All you East Coasters must have jumped on the wireless charge covers and the extra battery kit quickly because Samsung's website is already out of stock for all of those!

I just hope I'm able to get the extra battery kit, prior to my coupon expiring!

Default OEM Wireless Charging Cover and Spigen Slim Armour

They are pretty new, but does anyone have a wireless charging cover for their N3 yet? The Samsung page says:

*When installed, the Wireless Battery Cover will result in a very slight increase in the overall size of the device. As such, there is a possibility that not all case options may fit as they do with the standard battery cover installed.

Galaxy Note 3 Wireless Charging Cover, White

I dont know what the price on a charging base is, the back cover is $39.99 on the samsung site. Trying to understand if this back was used, can the device still charge if a Spigen Slim Armour case was used? with the Slim Armour even fit with that back?

Any Note 2 users out there perhaps that know?

Anybody have experience with wireless charging on the Note 2. Would it charge as fast as if it were plugged into the wall using the USB3 port? Wondering what the benefits/advantages are to using such a cover.

thanks for the ideas

Hi,
I picked mine up for androidcentral. The white cover makes the phone a bit thicker and heavier.

I have the QI-enabled back cover & will (time permitting) get some mics/calipers @ work tomorrow & get some precise measurements.

However,to best answer your questions in the meantime regarding fit/functionality w/the SPIGEN Case & QI-enabled battery cover:

1) You should have no problem w/charging capabitities w/the case installed, that is if it'll fit.

2) Fit will most likely be a problem,as I have 3 cases & the bumper being the only one that fits:

Accessories for the Note 3

Accessories for the Note 3

An e-mail to SPIGEN wouldn't be such a bad idea, perhaps they'll provide a comprehensive list of which cases will fit & those that won't.

Doesn't sound like a good risk to buy without trying it. If it was amazon, no problem, just return it. It not a good match for 50% off Samsung coupon I think

Default Overall Stock Dimensions

Here's the stock dimensions :

151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm (5.95 x 3.12 x 0.33 in)

I just read an article comparing the GS4 stock & w/a QI-ENABLED battery cover & it added 1.7mm extra thickness to the phone.

I'd expect the additional thickness of the GN3 QI-ENABLED cover to be similar.

Canceled you order for what? The Qi charging backplate? I am thinking that I might just get a spare batter y. Not sure of the benefit of the charging backplate anyway. If it were faster, maybe. But the N3 already charges pretty darn fast.

If this thing gets much more useful I think I'll scream! Wait: IT WILL!

I have ONE issue with it: I bought a USB 3 charging cable for the bedroom and can't see to attach it at night. I either guess at it and poke until I hit the hole or get up and turn a light on. Solution is at hand!

I ordered a Tylt Vu wireless charger and an OEM Samsung wireless charging S-view cover. Both are Qi compatible, so it should all work nicely. Now to wait for the cover to come in on the boat

You're gonna be torn as to where to use the TYLT QI CHARGER, trust me, you'll want another for your desktop PC work station.
But, before you go there, this might interest you :

JBL Powerup Wireless Charging Speaker Black | eBay

Got one on the way, sale price is good for another 7 hrs.

I need to unsubscribe from this thread. While waiting on my qi receiver, this is looking very tempting for my house.

The oem wireless backplate because it is thicker and many cases don't work with it.

If you opt for it, T-Mobile has it on their website & you can use the 30% discount code ACCOFFER07.

Well, since I had some points that I could afford to use from AMEX, I decided to give this universal holder a shot:

Amazon.com: Qi Wireless Car Charger Pad Charging Transmitter For Nokia LG SAMSUNG S3 S4 NOTE: Cell Phones & Accessories

Most of the time, I'm not big on Universal holders, but considering this is a wireless Qi Car holder, I think it was worth trying out. Adjustable for different width/length.

The fact that the Kidigi dock that I'm using, connected to my Proclip/Broddit base mount, is already using Richter (4 prong) mounting points, it'll be an easy swap of the mount.

Should this end up working well, I'll just sell my Kidigi mount.

Nah, Kolio, I know right where that charger's going: on my bedside nightstand. That's the only place I need a charger since this phone goes on all day long!

That's a great find on the wireless charger! But I have a nice set of BT stereo headsets, so I personally have no need for it... someone else will, though. Heck of a deal!

Same here, been on my usual "new phone accessory binge" of late & picked up the JAYBIRD BLUEBUDS X Stereo B/T headset. One word:AWESOME!

That's one thing it appears SAMSUNG has apparently nailed down,BLUETOOTH.
All my B/T accessories pair/connect & stay connected w/o the intermittent drop-off all my previous phones have had.

I will for sure. I plan on testing charging, without using the phone, as well as while either playing music or Nav or both. Granted, my Note 8.0 serves as my dedicated music player, while in my own car, but my phone is usually where I run NAV, since it is the only one with data connectivity, while on the road.

As of right now, my Kidigi mount doesn't charge the phone, when Nav is being used, so I'm anticipating similar results with the Wireless charger. If it does charge, while using Nav, then it's definitely a win, for me. Anything beyond that will just be gravy.

The more I started thinking about this, rather than buying a whole knew mount, for those of you that have the Arkon Ultra Slim Universal mount, you could probably make a "custom" wireless charging dock, since the ultra slim universal comes with longer prongs. This is all that would be needed:

This mount:
Amazon.com: Slim-Grip Ultra Sticky Suction Dashboard & Windshield Mount: Cell Phones & Accessories

or

Amazon.com: Metrans MWT02 Air Box Mini Qi Wireless Charger USB Charging Pad for Nokia Lumia 920 HTC 8X Google Nexus4 (White): Cell Phones & Accessories

or

Amazon.com: Mini Qi Wireless Charger Transmitter Charging Pad/Mat/Plate for Nokia Lumia 920 Nexus 4/5 iPhone 4/4S Samsung Galaxy S3/Note 2 with Blue LED indicator: Cell Phones & Accessories

Glue any of those (or any other "ultra thin" qi charger) to the back plate of this mount:
Amazon.com: DigiYes Ultra-thin Black QI Wireless Charger Compatible with LG Google Nexus 4 / Optimus Vu II / Nokia Lumia 920: Cell Phones & Accessories

The bottom portion of the mount is the one that expands, in order to place a device in the holder, but it also comes with extra long holder legs, so that it can accomodate tablets. I know because I use it for my Note 8.0. Even though the one I bought is much simpler and less work, there are ways that people can save some money if they're already using the Arkon Ultra Slim mount. What's great is that, with a Wireless Key charging back, one would essentially get a "dock and go" setup because the microUSB to power the Qi charger would be placed in the Qi transmitter.

I love the functionality of the wireless charger.
I have the charger at my night stand table. Once I am dome playing with my phone, I place on the pad and it gets fully charged when I get up in the morning.
