Lightbulb Enable Developer options!

Here is how to unlock developer options:

Open the GENERAL tab in the settings.
Go to ABOUT DEVICE
Tap the BUILD NUMBER 7 times.
It should now show a pop-up DEVELOPER OPTIONS ENABLED
Now go back to GENERAL tab and here you should now find DEVELOPER OPTIONS tab.

Heres a video:

When you bring up the recent apps by holding the home key, you can close apps by swiping them away to the left or right.
Not sure if this is a well known thing but I only found it today. I've been closing apps by holding+'remove from list' up to now.

The Note 2 had the same swipe away feature. Assuming it works the same, swiping doesn't close the app, it just just removes it from the recent apps list.

Default Take over which picture your Gmail contacts display

Have you ever wanted to change the profile picture that Google+, Facebook, or Twitter seems to force on you in Gmail? Senior member and Guest question team member RawlingsSc has found a way.

"While viewing the contact tap on Menu then mark as default. You can then set the default in a number of categories including which picture to use." I'd just like to add that after marking as default you have to go back to the contact and tap on the picture to change it.

Thanks RawlingsSc.

Default Need your screen brighter than full brightness for use in the sunshine?

With your brightness slider on full brightness turn on the Auto brightness feature when you go outside into bright sunshine. This will increase your brightness even higher than you can do it manually.

Default Pair up your Favorite Multi-Window apps

"Multi window is all very well, but it takes time to arrange your various apps each time you open them. Samsung has considered this and introduced the option to open applications in pairs, saving you valuable seconds. Simply open up any two apps -- preferably ones you like to pair together, naturally -- and then scroll down to the bottom of the multi-window panel. You'll see an arrow at the bottom -- tap this and you'll be presented with an icon showing a screen divided into two sections. Tap this to create the "pair". This newly created duo will appear at the top of the multi-window panel from this point onwards."

Default Settings made simple

One of the new things the Note 3 has brought us is a search box in the Settings menu. Using this box you can find out what settings you need to change to preform a specific task. For example if you want to use gloves with your Note 3 (it's getting cold out there) Tap on the Menu icon, choose System Settings or Settings then type in gloves in the search box and you are brought to where you can enable Increase touch sensitivity. Want one handed operation? Type One hand in the search box and be taken to the one handed operation options. This search box function can be very useful if you want to do something and your not really sure how.

Action Memo via Air Command shortcut

When you're using the S-PEN and create a new Action Memo via Air Command, you can turn the note into a shortcut by clicking the "minimize" button on the memo toolbar.

This isn't new to the Note 3, but it's still handy info. More on the multi-window drawer:

If the arrow to open up the multi-window apps gets in the way, or you don't use it (often), while on a home screen, long-press the back button to hide the arrow. To bring it back, just long-press the back button again.

Learned this one from my boss who owns a Note 2.

Default Expanding notifications in the notification panel with 1 finger

Some may remember, that in previous Android versions, you could expand notifications in the notification panel, by dragging the notification down with 1 finger.

Now you can expand notifications by dragging it with 2 fingers also.
Or one, if you like.

EDIT! Fixed the info. Had it the wrong way around. TWO finger pull-down is new, not ONE.

I'm so confused by this. Ever since I got my 1st android phone over 3 years ago, I have been able to expand notifications by dragging with only 1 finger. Is this something new?

Oh? In that case I'm very sorry for the misinformation.
This info was in a Note 3 tip/trick video I watched on youtube,
and the person in the video said it was new thing in android 4.3

Admins, could you please delete my previous message as it is misinformative?

No worries. The ability to pull the notification bar down is a standard Android function that has been around since the first android phone.

My Note 3 has not arrived yet, so most of stuff I have submitted to this tips/tricks thread are from youtube videos and other forums.
I havent had much to do while waiting, so I've been going trough videos etc and if I come across something not mentioned here (like the developer options enabling, flash as notification light etc), I submit it here.

In the future, if I find something, I'll doublecheck the info from atleast 2 different sources before posting to avoid future mistakes..

Default Tired of searching for Samsung apps in that folder in the app drawer?

Set them Free! Senior member dynomot replying to Member camphill offered this solution that works for a treat;

Open the apps drawer, then navigate to the Samsung folder and open it, now press the menu key, then edit and drag the entire folder to the bin. This will "free" all the apps from the folder and put them in the app drawer.

You can see the original thread here.

Thanks dynomot!

Settings/Device/Lock screen/short cuts turn on, then select which ones you need, you can move the ones already on there and choose your own.

PS: I think this thread is for tips and tricks only so might be better asking this in the forum by either searching to see if its been asked before, or if not by starting a new thread.

Default Adding Widgets to your Stock Lock screen

Unlike a 3rd party app like Widgetlocker where you can add widgets to the primary lock screen (the first one you see when you turn your Note 3 back on) the stock locks screen requires you to create a sperate screen for each widget,

First tap on the Settings key and go to the Device tab. From there tap on Lock screen and make sure Multiple widgets is toggled on. Now swipe right on the clock widget and at the next screen that appears tap on the + sign. A limited list of widgets will appear and you can place one on that page. Choose a widget and tap on done. Now when you swipe right from the clock widget you will see the widget you installed. Another swipe to the right from that widget brings you back to the + sign screen. Add as many widget pages as you like.

UPDATE:
This function only works on Swipe Lock screen security settings. Assign any other security leve land Multiple widgets does not appear in your Device > Lock screen options.

Thanks for reminding me Lilian

You have to set your lock to swipe for this to work. Any other lock (PIN, pattern etc) will not allow lock screen widgets.

OK one feature that is missing is the ability to go to S-voice and instead of saying something, writing it, this was available in the S-voice app on Note 2, not English UK but English US.

a. Call a mobile number (obviously, landlines will not work) - tested it by calling my cell number
b. While on call...remove stylus, "Air command" option appears...select <Action Memo>
c. Action Memo appears and <Send MMS> will also appear at the top right of memo screen
d. End call..optional
e. Hand write memo - i.e. "testing Send MMS 12-28-13"...touch/select <Send MMS>
f. Hand written memo arrives in you messaging application.

Awesome....like you said this was right under my nose and I didn't even see it. It doesn't "see" everything correctly, but, it does get the majority of it right.

While that is a function I appreciate, I always seem to have a tougher time getting it to respond right away. Either I end up preasing home too long or power. But still a good alternate for people to use.

Appreciate you quoting that one. I had a business card scanner app that served the same function on my past phones, but didn't realize there is a built in method!

Didn't know this either. So, once you capture the material on the screen, how do you paste it somewhere else? Thanks

Just discovered this one a few minutes ago:

In Chrome browser, you can use the S-pen to zoom in and out. To do so:
- Double-tap on the screen with the S-pen, holding it down on the second tap.
- While still holding the pen to the screen, move it up to zoom out, down to zoom in.
- Remove the pen from the screen when the zoom is at the preferred level.

This works in both portrait and landscape view.

Default Stop Playstore App auto updates

Not a Note 3 tip, exactly, but some were not aware of this.

Go onto the Playstore. Press your menu button on lower left. Settings will become available. You can deselect auto update from there!

I haven't explored using Knox yet because of the stipulation that incorrect password input would wipe the device, which would not be good for me.
That is the whole point of Knox .. Your work environment / Exchange will stay sandboxed. FOr example, when you setup your account on your phone, they can wipe the device etc. If you setup your account in Knox - it just wipes the Knox environment and leaves your "main" phone area alone.

That is contrary to howit was explained to me. I was told that knox wipes the entire phone when inputting the pin wrong 3 times.

Default Samsung Galaxy microUSB to USB Adapter

The Galaxy Note 3 features the USB 3 adapter, but will also accept Galaxy S4 (USB 2) cables... they plug into the "right" side of the 3.0 interface.

Once such cable is the Samsung Galaxy S4 micro USB to USB Adapter which provides a full-size USB female port. I've tested a wireless mouse and keyboard via this adapter (with a USB hub) with very good results. The keyboard buffering is a tiny bit lagged but manageable. There's an on-screen mouse cursor (didn't show in the image below) & the mouse moves smoothly on the screen. Right-click on the mouse is equal to the back soft-button on the device.

There's also a USB-to-HDMI adapter but I haven't tried that one yet.

Sorry, just correcting you. It's a USB hub and not a splitter. A splitter is a cable split into several leads. A hub is like a little box with additional inputs.

It's referred to as MHL adapter for those looking. But have to be aware that there are several different types in the market. Some require a power lead to power the connection in order to work. If spec'd properly to MHL 2.0 certification standards, the Note 3 should be able to power it on its own.

Troubleshooting:

SAFE MODE:
1) Power down the device
2) Press and hold both Volume Down and Power buttons
3) When splash screen appears, release the Power button, but continue holding down the Volume Down button
4) Keep holding down the Volume Down button until you see 'Safe mode' in the bottom left corner of the screen

Safe mode disables all third party apps and runs stock defaults only. This helps if you suspect an app causing an issue with the device. You can uninstall problematic apps in this mode.

ANDROID RECOVERY CONSOLE:
1) Power down the device
2) Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together
3) When splash screen appears, release only the Power button, but continue holding down the Volume Up and Home buttons
4) When the green guy appears, you can release the other buttons
5) Use the Volume buttons to navigate the menu and Power button to select

Mainly use this to wipe cache. Or in severe cases a factory reset (last resort, nuke the device and start over approach).

With Note 2 and 4.3 JB (assuming it's based on Note 3 settings):

Settings>Display>Brightness

Check Automatic Brightness. You now have a slider to adjust brightness between -5 to +5.

This appears to be another feature on the Note 2 that never made it to the Note 3.

Maybe I misunderstood Neo's post or haven't received an update yet where this feature is added, but I took it to mean that after I turn auto brightness on, the brightness slider changes from a free-floating one to one with specific presets. Mine doesn't behave this way; I can have a manually-adjusted brightness or automatic brightness, but not both. In the settings menu, when I check the box for auto brightness, the slider greys out and won't allow me to change anything. In the notification pull down, the slider will move, but the check next to auto brightness disappears the instant I begin moving the slider around.

In any case, if we're going to continue this conversation, it should probably be moved to its own thread so we don't clog this fine tips and tricks thread with it.

Has anyone mentioned the alarm/clock/stopwatch/timer on the taskbar yet? Just pull down the taskbar and click on the clock on the left. It will pull up the world clock. Click on any city and you will see all the options across the top. I know you can get this using the s-pen but this is quick and pretty neat too.

Not sure if this had been mentioned before, but it's something that I use all the time, so I wanted to share.

For those of you that take advantage of the S-pen and action memo, if you use it to write down grocery/shopping lists, when you open up the list in action memo, you can actually put your phone in standby and when you wake the phone, the list will still be open on top of the lock screen. No need to unlock the phone, in order to see the list again. For me, this is a huge help when I'm shopping because I'll go to one isle, get all the items on the list, take the phone off standby, cross off the items on the list, and then put the phone back on standby. I do this continually throughout the store, until I've obtained all the items I need.
