Default s-pen screenshots

Hold down the button on your s-pen and press it to the screen for 1-2 seconds until you hear a click or see the screenshot taken. This is old hat to Note 2 users but I wasn't one of those. Used to have to go through all kinds of hoops to get one on my Galaxy S2.

Hold down the S Spen button and lasso/cut out a section of the screen, then send it to Scrapbook, Picasa, Email, a text message, Dropbox, bluetooth, Facebook, Gmail, Google+, S Note, Sketchbook, or Wifi Direct.

I seem to remember this feature was part of the TV commercial for the Note 1 or Note 2, and was one of the first things I wanted to try with my new Note 3.

It's a little different from the Air Command/Scrap Booker function, that will copy a rectangular section of the screen, even if you draw a circle around something.

Default Enabling Night Mode on the Camera

Open the camera, turn of the flash by tapping on Settings then the Gear icon, scroll down and set Flash to off. Now tap on the Camera icon, Scroll Down and Turn on Smart Stabilization. Tap on the Back button and you will see the Moon and Star icon in the upper left corner indicating Night Mode is active. Switching your flash to auto mode keeps night mode on as needed,

I took this Picture in Night Mode.

This one with Smart stabilization off.

  • screen shot can also be done by side swiping across the screen with the side of your hand.
  • press and hold the menu button is great to show history and search items on the device.

Not really. I've done just as well so far with my N3 as I have with my N2 or GNex before it. As they squeeze more MP onto the sensor, your hand holding technique has to get that much better. Same thing happened to a lot of photogs who moved from the D70 > D80/D200 > D300/D700 > D600/D800/D7000/D7100.

Of course, the other side of it is noise reduction which smooths over details in photos sometimes. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any camera phone that handles this well.

well theres a couple of threads going on where people are having problems. I personally don't believe the n3 is as easy to take good shots with as the n2. I'm on my second n3 and it still comes up with 'processing' and the detail isnt as sharp.

I dont want to lean on a wall to take a good picture. I just want to pull it out of my pocket and shoot. The n3 isn't as good at this as my n2. In any way, this is disappointing.

Thanks for pointing that out, Bobby! At first, I was disappointed, since I prefer using NOVA Prime, but then I looked through the Gestures on NOVA Prime and the option was there for me (without realizing it)!

For those using NOVA Launcher Prime, you can set the gestures to do the same thing too, so if were hoping to use that function without having to switch back to the Touchwiz UI, just switch the 2 finger swipe down gesture to "Expand Quick Settings".

Try to stay on topic folks. As bonerp said there arerother threads discussing problem issues with the various aspects of the Note 3. This thread is about various ways to get the most out of your new Note 3. I'm particularly interested in getting input from s-pen/s-view case users at the moment. Using the s-pen is definitely not my forte.

Default Turning on and using Multi-Window View

One of the coolest features on our Note 3ís is Multi-Window View. In order to use it you have to enable it. This can be done by tapping on the settings button then Device, Sound and display and sliding the switch to on for Multi-Window or use the 2 finger pull down method and tap on the Multi-Window button, once this is done you will see a little crescent tab on the left side of your screen. If you donít just long press on the back button and it will appear. Donít like it on the left? Just pull open the Multi-Window drawer using the tab then keeping your finger on the tab pull to the right side. Donít want to see it until you need it? Just long press on the back button and it will hide itself.

Adding apps to the Multi-Window drawer.

Only a limited number of apps can use the Multi window drawer at this time. Being available for Multi Window use is something that the developer has to incorporate into his code when making their apps so don't blame Samsung. It can be done by an end user but it involves decompiling the .apk, inserting code and recompiling. Needless to say Iím not going to get into that. Iím a user not a developer. The apps that can already use Multi window can be seen by opening your Multi window drawer, tapping on the little dots at the bottom and choosing Edit. Just long press and drag the app you want in your drawer over from the choices your shown there. Reverse the process to remove apps from the drawer you donít think youíll use.

Here's what my Multi-Window drawer looks like now;

Default Viewing Weather and appointment without enabling Multi-widgets on your Swipe Lock screen

If you're using Swipe for your Lock screen and have the time displayed you can see the weather and your appointments by long pressing on the clock and pulling down. You go back to the clock by reversing the process. No need to unlock your phone.

you can also set up lots of different views on the lock screen itself. Emails, calendar, shortcuts etc. I also added a "If found, please email xxxxxx.xom" message to the lock screen in the vague hope that if I lost it some benevalent soul might retunr it. All in settings.

I got an Sview cover and hated it - the window is a bit cheap and prone to marks.
I've today received the Spigen Neo hybrid. Didnt like it at first but definately growing on me and the quality is very good.

Just FYI, for those that do BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) for work (like me), using exchange forces me to use pin lock only, so the stock swipe lockscreen can't be used. I used to be able to have both, but the security on my exchange prevents that.

I haven't explored using Knox yet because of the stipulation that incorrect password input would wipe the device, which would not be good for me.

That's odd, because my work uses exchange and I'm able to use swipe unlock just fine. I wonder if your IT department has things set to allow pin or password only. :what:

I have found a way around this. Works on the s4 as well. On the lock screen, change the keyboard to Swype. Then put in your code, such as ghjkl9 into a text message and you will be allowed to add this string to your custom dictionary. Now swyping from the g>>>>>> over puts this string in the lockscreen. Works with Exchange 2010. Are you using a BYOD software package in front of Exchange that prevents this?

Probably is my IT department that disallows both.

No need for workaround anymore, but good info to know. Widgetlocker was updated and am happily back on that in combination with password, which only activates after 30 minutes inactivity!

Default Keep your Action Memos on your Homescreen

Android forums member kathyayes asked and xaelith answered;

kathayes:
Is there a way to make a memo with the s pen and have it stay open on one of the home screens?

xaelith:
Check the Widgets tab in the App drawer. So long as you are using the default launcher, there will be a 4x3 widget available. If you have multiple memos, you can switch from one to the next by swiping up or down on the widget itself.

Great interaction folks! keep this up and we'll tame this beasty.

I find this method very hard and tricky. My hand always accidentally activate widgets/programs/emails/turn page/etc.

Anyone has the same problem?
Any tutorial/youtube how to do it right?

I never could get it to work on my Note 2 and ran into the same problems. I was just able to get it to work on my Note 3 but in the process, I opened a side menu of the program I was in. So instead of a screen shot of the page I wanted, I've got a menu instead. I'd just stick with the S-pen method as it is just the easiest screenshot method I've seen yet on any phone.

YouTube videos are a big help in finding hidden tips and features for me. I tend to learn and retain stuff faster if I actually see it. There are many different videos to chose from, some good, some bad. Nice thing about YouTube is that it's free so if you click on a bad one you just close it and click on another. Here's a link for a guy that did a two part video. Some of the stuff is obvious but many of the features he shows were new to me.

In order for this to work you need to make sure motion is turned on in the options and then the individual option for palm swipe capture is checked.

Just take s pen out, hold button on s pen while pressing s pen on screen. Easiest way to do screen shot.

Default Multi-Window Drawer Arrow

The arrow in the middle of the screen would get in the way of me going to other screens as it was located directly in the middle of the screen and therefore the path of my thumb swiping back and forth.

If you hold down the arrow of the drawer while the drawer itself is hidden, you can long hold the arrow and move it up or down.

Default Tired of Air command popping up everytime you pull out the s-pen?

dustwun77 shared this great tip in answer to a question posted in the N3 problems thread:

Tap on the Settings button > Controls > S-pen > Pen detacment options and set it to none.

You can also set it so Action memo pops up on detachment if you're an avid memo taker.

Default Clearing your clipboard

Ever wonder what happens to all those links and other things you have copied to your clipboard before pasting in a post or document? Long press on the microphone key on your Samsung keyboard to find out and delete anything you don't need anymore.

Thanks to members Jeffruby and Klotar in the LG G2 forum for pointing this out. Not specifically a Note 3 tip but pretty cool nonetheless.

Update: You can also reuse clipboard items by just tapping on them after the microphone key long press. You have to redo url tags though.

Default Camera filters and downloading more filters

Tap the chevron icon in the stock camera to view available filters. Scroll them all the way to the right, or down (depending on orientation), to see a link for downloading more filters.

This uses the Samsung app store, so you'll likely need to create an account if you've not already.

Default Diagnostics still there?

I don't have a Note 3 and forgot to test this out on a store demo unit.

On the original Note and Note 2 you can bring up the dial keypad and dial *#0*# to bring up a diagnostic panel. Is this still present on the Note 3?

Default Take a picture of a business card and have it converted to contacts easily

It's funny how you don't see thing until someone shoves it in your face... In the contacts app there is a new icon with a picture of a business card with a small camera over the lower right corner of the card. Tap on that, take a picture of a standard business card and Viola! it captures all the info in contact fields that you can edit before you save.

Open Contacts, tap on the + symbol
Choose where you want the new contact saved
Tap on the Business card icon
Take a photo of the card. Try it without flash in a well lit room for best results.
Check the details
Tap on Save

Thanks to The Daily Note II/3 - Samsung Galaxy Note 2 & Note 3 Daily Videos for pointing this out for us.

That is awesome. As someone that seems to be flypaper for business cards, this would be a godsend.

You know, as much as I dislike Samsung for the region lock fiasco (let's not discuss that in this thread please) and my averment that I wasn't going to buy a Note 3 to replace my SGS2, I keep finding myself back in these forums...

I think it's time to bite the bullet and get one.

Awesome tip. I'll actually use this one a lot. One thing I would point out though is at least on my Sprint phone I have to open the contacts app then hit the settings button, then select business card to open that up. then the little icon in the top right hand corner opens the camera.

It seems fairly accurate on the first 5 or so cards I tried it out on. It gets most everything right but you definitely have to proofread them before you save. At least it saves a copy of the card you can go back later and view. This is golden.

Thanks for the tip.

I googled the poo out of it because I wanted to see the temp/humidity/barometric pressure without having to install an app to do it.

Then I did install an app, and it was garbage.

Default How to use gloves with your Note 3 in cold weather...

I did not find any mention of this via search so thought I'll add this as winter is approaching. (I know it is in the manual, but not everyone reads them so..)

You can use gloves with the touchscreen if you increase the screen sensitivity.

Increasing touch screen sensitivity
Use this feature to let the device increase its touch sensitivity.
On the Home screen, tap Apps→Settings→Controls, and then tick Increase touch
sensitivity.
ē Use leather gloves for better recognition while touching the screen. Other types of
material may not be recognised.
ē For best results, tap the screen firmly while wearing gloves.
ē The screen may not respond if you are wearing gloves when using the device
through the S View cover window.

It works almost too well! Wooley gloves work, but slip on the screen very easily. I would imagine calf skin gloves would be best.

Lillian, off topic totally. I like your signature I notice where your from and that one of your previous phones was a Nokia N8. Is your signature a reference to what happened at Nokia? Just a thought

Actually, it's is from the game Alice: Madness Returns, but I guess it could be used to describe Nokias fate too. EDIT; Nokias fate was also the reason I jumped to Samsung.

Funny, HTC's impending fate is the reason why I jumped back to Samsung.

Actually its there too. The wording on the original tip implied that all you had to do was open contacts and it would be there. I rarely spend any time in that particular app and didn't realize they had added any features in there. That's really handy.

You, me and alot of others as well 'defected' to Samsung. I loved Nokia phones and still have my N95 and my N900 - the latter is was way ahead of it's time and a fantastic phone.

Anyway sorry to thread jack - back on topic.

Default Using flash as call alert!

Use your flash as notification light! Very usefull, if your phone is on mute.

Go to Settings -> Device tab -> Accessibility -> Scroll down to Flash Notification and check the box to the right. This will deliver a very bright alert for notifications. Turning the device over will turn it off for that notification.

Easy Phone Tunes Plus

All are availble from the Play Store.
