Default Adding smiley changes a text into an mms

Just noticed that when I added a smiley face into my text using the smiley button that my text changed into an mms. My monthly plan doesn't include mms messages so does any one know how to stop this whilst still having the ability to use smileys?

You'll either have to manually enter in your own emoticons or switch keyboards to one that doesn't insert these crazy ones. I just manually enter mine for now.
