Uh oh..... This very same thing has actually happened to me twice now. However, one of those times I actually had to remove the battery and re-insert it before the device would let me reboot it.

Happened once when loading Shadowgun with <10% battery remaining, otherwise never happened. Not an issue for me.

Is this some kind of battery issue or an app/software issue?

anyone else having this problem? because that seems kinda annoying to have your phone shut down randomly.

Mine has random reboots at least four times a day. I'm reading up and it seems like it might be memory leaks from applications, but I can't figure out how to diagnose it (I'm technical enough, but not well versed with Android beyond setting it up the way I want).

Any clues on a way to find out the bad apps other than uninstalling them one by one?

Hey yo!! I also had same problem (random reboot) and make me headache now.
My ex Galaxy Tab had no problem at all but Note. What I do is….
1, Bought it on 25/Jan at Jay Mart in Chiangmai Thailand. One the way to back home, its already happened . I thought using too much RAM and try to clean up often but seem not well.
2, on 27/Jan, I bring it to Samsung service shop and they heard resets my device. Service was quick and smooth.
3, Keep it as they resets device (no apps and no SD install), but still reboot so, I send an e-mail to Samsung Service for help on 28/Feb.
4, Samsung reply that, Samsung Malaysia will take care,,,,,,,,,. but no solutions were mentioned and update info up to now.
5, Today, I bring it to Samsung Service again, Seems they try heard but finally, they said its may cause by Device not OS or application. They issue some kind of letter witch mention its ‘’can not repaired’’
6, Bring the letter to Jay Mart to replace new one, but they had out of stock. Wait until 4/Feb.
So, What I hear in Thailand, Samsung service thinks its Hardware problem.
Would be happy if anyone have more info or way to solb it.

Purchased my Note 2 weeks ago in Thailand and a similar but different problem. It does not necessitate rebooting, but restarting the screen by pushing the on button. Regardless of settings and before software was installed the screen randomly shuts down; perhaps 5 seconds, perhaps one minute. Most annoying to say the least so I hope someone finds a fix!

I have had two instances where my Note would not just wake up on pressing the Home or Power button. I am not sure if it is just the screen that goes dead or the phone itself powers off.

Both the times , my phone was in pocket and my theory is that probably the power button got pressed for 10 seconds or so and this caused the phone to power off.

Your thoughts?

If it powered off then when rebooted by pushing the on button you would see it powering up with the Samsung Galaxy Note logo and the pic while powering up. If it was merely activating the screen you would not see that, it would show the home screen (or perhaps it can be set for another screen).

There is a reported problem with a build up of static that can cause an issue.

I believe this is the sleep of death that a number of poeple are complaining about. It seems to happen to me once every two weeks or so which it not bad given the amount of use my phone sees (I have taken to playing FPS games on the phone). I am still rebooting a lot less than my previous phone so I cannot complain.

I am using BatteryXL but I doubt that is the issue. Sometimes the problem happens when I switch off the display and then immediately try to turn it back on. I cannot say that I have seen a pattern so far, but I am still taking notes.

Regards,
Eric Ritchie.

I've still not had a repeat so far since I dumped BatteryXL though it seems to be a stock installed app that is the route cause.

Happened to me twice in a couple weeks. The last time was after I was showing a friend Shadow Gun, In the middle of the game I exited the game, then just crashed all of a sudden. I took out Battery XL, to see if it happens again.

I'm not worried.

Mine has shut down at random 3 times in the last month. Had to remove battery each time to restart it. Very annoying when it happened during the night and the alarm didn't go off....

really hope ICS makes the phone a bit more reliable.

I had this problem before but now it never happens....

It used to be the apps and background services....There are lot of apps (bg services) with a lot of bugs which tries to force close while having some issues but since its unable to do that, restarts or shuts down the mobile....mostly the net based apps....

Luckily I recognized those apps and the problem never occurred again.....

If this only started happening after you inserted the sd card, then it makes sense to assume it is the sd card that's the problem. Turn off your phone and remove the sd card. Turn on the phone and see if the problem goes away. If it does, try using a different sd card and see what happens.

I believe this is a software bug. Try to disable your wifi before leaving your wifi network area. This problem happen to me whenever my phone try to communicate with a "valid" wifi network. I always try to turn off my wifi function whenever I don't need it. Whenever I forget to turn off the wifi function before I leave my wifi access area, the phone will surely restart itself after about 15 to 30 minutes and it will continue to do so until I go to a wifi spot where my phone has access right. I could not even turn off the wifi function if the phone cannot detect an "accessable" wifi spot.

Hi James.

I leave my Wi-Fi on most of the time and don't have any issues with the phone restarting. What Android version are you running and are you rooted?

What are your wifi settings?

Mine are: Network Notification=Unticked.

Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep=Always

Wi-Fi frequency band=Auto

This does happen when I put in my secondary battery but while i took out the battery because that was the only way to get it going again before I put it in I took out the SD memory and put it back in. I know I did not dismount it but it was a spur of the moment but since doing that 2 days gone and have not shutdown. I think eventhough I did not dismount the sd should be fine maybe before i change i would dismount it.

This happens to the Note 2 as well and is not software related. The problem is hardware related. The phone is flawed and shuts off on it's own under various conditions, all hardware related. Take a look at this video: 20130413_212624.mp4 - YouTube

Also, take a look at this site I built that goes in to more detail regarding the issue: Verizon Galaxy Note 2 Shuts Off

One look at that short video and I am sure there will be some light bulbs going off. Be sure to read the details I provided on that site as well. They go in to detail about the problems that I have had and the lack of proper support that Samsung is willing to provide.
