Default Galaxy Note stuck at Samsung logo after automatic update

Hi,

So I have been using ICS on my Galaxy Note for almost a month now, and a few minutes ago, I saw a message telling me that an update had been downloaded and the phone would be rebooted to install the update.

I clicked the OK button in the dialog box, and my phone did reboot but is now stuck at the flashing Samsung logo (after the initial musical animation, which incidentally was terminated midway). It has been about 5-8 minutes.

Should I just wait for the flashing logo to disappear and the home screen to show up? Could something be wrong?

Thanks in advance!

The phone got quite hot after about 20 minutes, so I switched it off by pressing the power button. Then I switched it back on after a while, and it was stuck at the flashing Samsung logo. Then I kept it in my pocket and forgot all about it. I just took it out after about 2 hours, and now it won't turn on.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Okay now it does turn on, but it has been stuck at the flashing Samsung logo for as long as I can remember. Also its getting very warm. What should I do?

I guess the battery discharged, if the processor was being used a lot, two hours would be enough to do that.

Thanks Eric. But even after the battery has been charged, the phone is still stuck at the flashing Samsung logo. When I plug it in, Windows detects it as a Samsung USB modem, but Kies obviously doesn't detect it.

The portion at the back near the camera is quite warm. I have removed the back cover, to avoid any overheating.

Any ideas?

Did you try contacting the Samsung Service Center? What do they have to say? I'm essentially in a village right now and the service center is almost a city away, so I guess I have to wait till I return to my hometown.

I wish there were some key combination that one could invoke to hard reset it during bootup. What will the service center do anyway if the phone does not boot up at all?

Install PC ODIN. Connect the Galaxy note to a computer and run the PC ODIN, if it detect your phone, flash a new ROM. If it fail to detect, submit to the service center.

Using Odin will void the warranty on your phone as far as I know.

There ought to be a better way to do a hard reset -- even if it be at the expense of the data on the phone, maybe using some on-bootup key strokes?

I heard that you will only void the warranty if you flash custom ROMs, however flashing the official firmware should be ok.

Eric Ritchie.

How can I flash the ROM when my phone won't even boot up? The link you gave says

"Enable USB debugging on your Galaxy Note."

I can't do that. Also, the phone does not respond to the combination of keystrokes (power + volume + home).

I am no lawyer, but this sounds dodgy to me. As fas as I know the warranty on the Note is an international warranty. Therefore it should not matter where you bought it. I would call Samsung and ask them what to do.

Eric Ritchie.

Default Solution!!!

Hey guys... I had the same problem yesterday and after researching for like hours, I came across a solution that actually worked for me...

You have to unroot your NOTE to a gingerbread version using ODIN..

After that you can upgrade to ICS through the software update from the phone.

It took me around 3 hours cause I had to download the gingerbread 2.3.6 version (~550mb), Samsung Kies, Odin and then unroot, factory reset and then update my phone around 3-4 times to get the final ICS update.

Download:
Gingerbread Link: [STOCK ROMS] N7000 All stock ROMs + install + Root guide All at 1place,Latest ICS LQ3 - xda-developers (Select appropriate link based on region, only the 2.3.X versions)

Odin: Download Tools/ODIN/Odin3v185.zip at StockROMs.net

Kies: Download Samsung/Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe at DownloadAndroidROM.com

Step 1: Download from all of the above links and unzip. Install Kies if not done so in order for your pc to detect your phone.

Step 2: Put your Galaxy Note into download mode by holding down the Volume Down, Center button, and the Power button together for about 10 seconds. Then press volume up when you see the warning sign. Connect it to your computer.

Step 3: Run Odin

Step 4: Choose “PDA” and choose the stock ROM file you unzipped earlier if you have one file.
If you have multiple files, choose the file ending with “user_low_ship.tar.md5″ for PDA, choose the file that contains “MODEM” in its filename for PHONE, and choose file that contains “CSC” in its filename for CSC.

Step 5: Make sure you get a yellow highlighted COM on ODIN. If you dont install Samsung Kies. After installing, unplug and plug in the micro-USB cable to your Galaxy Note and you should get the yellow highlight.

Step 6: Next hit “Start” and after 5-10 minutes, your phone will reboot and you should be back on stock ROM. When you see the green droid, Don't continue.

Step 7 : You will also need to do a factory reset afterwards. To do this, hold down Volume Up, Center button, and Power button for about 10 seconds until you see yellow messages. Choose “Wipe data/factory reset” and choose "Yes".

DONE!!!

After this just go to the software update and keep updating!!! ***Don't update the 7mb*** you dont want the same thing to happen again...

Ya I tried it on my note and its working just fine. Dont't worry about it, I was a beginner as well. I read that the only ROM's that were safe for NOTE are the gingerbread ROM's. If you flash an ICS ROM, then you wont be able to factory reset or anything like that as there is a great chance for you NOTE to brick.

And about the updating part - After you finish the above steps, you'll be on gingerbread. So just update your phone manually. For me, samsung(My Phone) asked me to update so I kept on doing that until I was from gingerbread to ICS(there are like 3-4 updates in between). I was also asked to update that "7 Mb" file(after installing ICS), which led to this problem of hanging on the samsung logo. Dont do that update. After updating to ICS, turn off the automatic software update option. You'll know that you are on ICS as it is a big update of >300mb.

I also emailed samsung about the situation and all they told me was to see the samsung store so ya, it just better to do it my way.

Hope this helps!!! Good Luck guys!!! (oh ya... You need a windows pc, I have done mine on a mac but I have a windows 7 partition which i find quite useful sometimes)

Had the same problem.

Went to the service center and was told that the only thing I could do was to have them reset my phone and all data would be lost.

I got the update three hours ago and my phone is dead! well not dead but hangs at Samsung logo. I am based in UK but had purchased the phone in India...

Why the intelligent people at Samsung do not STOP this "update" from rolling out? Surely by now they know that they are killing phones.

I really need to know which "sentient being" tested this "update"...

I am so angry as my phone is pretty much useless now...

I went to the service center and got the phone reset for free (it is in warranty). I am still getting a notification to download and install that wretched 7.85 MB update, but I have turned off the 'automatic update' setting, and I won't even bother about it till I read on the forums here that everything has been resolved.

I am getting a notification from Kies (attached) to upgrade the firmware. It is tempting, but I am not going to do it.

If someone has any views/opinions on this, please feel free to share.

hi Everyone

i think i found a solution,
first of all i downloaded the India 4.0.3 Software from samfirmware.com

then followed instructions from [STOCK ROMS] N7000 All stock ROMs + install + Root guide All at 1place,Latest ICS LQ3 - xda-developers

all with help of PCODIN 1.85,

magically all my data was still there even with my wallpaper and apps and each and every small setting i made, even my call log was still intact.

Default Can you please be more specific?

Fixed:

Further explanation to kurivellam's note:

go to:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997

And download the correct ICS for your region. I download the following:

N7000DDLP8-------4.0.3-----------2012 May-----------N7000ODDLP5-------------India----- -------------------------------Download

Then follow step 1.b from the following:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26455511&postcount=2475

Just one addition:

ID com port shud turn yellow (not shown in image) (To get it to turn yellow click on the field before hitting start) Please note if ID com port is not yellow it won't work.

Now click start and claim your Note back.

Also note that I did not loose any data so you are safe to follow the above.

You guys saved me from a world of misery. I'm in Australia and bought my girl a Note last year (it was an Indian version). Last night, she also applied the 8 MB update and it was frozen at the Samsung startup screen.

I followed LoadRunner's instructions to a tea. The phone is alive again.

Big thanks!

Well I would like to thank Matt12786, kurivellam and Loadrunner for helping us out.....
In the end I followed Loadrunner's solution and it worked perfectly well......I have all my previous data intact and my phone is also up and running.......
I bought this phone from India and currently I am studying in NZ..........So I would been in some serious trouble, hadn't I stumbled onto this forum..:-)..especially after receiving cold shoulders from Samsung guys.............
But thanks once again geniuses....:-)

Default Info!!!

Hey you guys should also consider reading this:

Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000: Upgrading to Android 4.0.3 ICS firmware XXLQ2

and know which version you have installed. Its like I said, directly rooting to 4.x could lead to a problem if formatted, erased, etc. Don't follow it. Just read the risk.

Have the same problem, from Germany.

I *think* the update was 24mb and not 8, but I am not entirely sure.
Stuck in the same way on the same screen.
Contacted German customer service, will post if/what they answer.

Does anyone have any confirmed information on whether using Odin voids the warrantry?

I tried the first solution in ErlendRoger's post. NOT WORKING!

I wiped my phone... for nothing. Still stuck on the same screen. You're warned, don't follow in my steps

UPDATE: the answer I got on the Samsung forum was I will probably need to send it in, if the wiping was not enough. Joy.... still waiting for mail-reply from customer service. Sigh.
