Hi there,
Judging by the info you have given the taster as you say lasts 3 months. On this contract it will revert back to 500mb afterwards. Now I am assuming on a 24month contract and at £31 a month. This info should have been given to you when you purchased the phone and contract. 500mb is generally enough for most people to use when away from home wf-fi except if your using the public free wi-fi hotspots like bt openzone. Suggest whilst your home switch to that although once you have set it up the note automatically switches to it, thus saves you from touching your data plan as it uses the broadband data plan again assuming you have it.
In regards to updating software/firmware if like me you purchased via a provider and is locked to them, it's up to the provider to release it to you. You will have to find out what current release your on and then via Kies on your pc upgrade this the the current version of 4.0.3, although point of note that currently 4.0.4 and latterly jellyben 4.1 are doing the rounds but the latter will be late this year given the way ICS took its time to cascade out.
Hope this helps you.
Simon
