Camera Lense W/O using a case?

Anyone not using a case notice if the lense is protected enough? I ask because I didn't have a case for my EVO and the lense scratched really bad. The Note2 looks like the lense is a little bit recessed, but not sure if it is recessed enough? What's your thoughts on this?
