Default Controlling What Appears In Left Of Status Bar?

N7000, Android 4.1.2.

I'm calling it "Status Bar" because that is what WeatherBug's Preferences calls it.

Looks like the top left of the screen contains icons relating to what is running at the moment - although I've tried killing all processes (RAM Manager | Clear memory) and some (DoggCatcher, Good For Enterprise....) persist.

Can anybody say what's going on there?

You can usually prevent the notifications from appearing by selecting the relevant app in Menu key Settings / Application manager and un-ticking the 'Show notification' box.
