Arrow Idiot's Guide: Flashing PRLs on the Precedent

1. You do not have to be rooted for this:

2. You do not need the full version of CDMA-Workshop for this

3. You will need:

A PRL file, You can get some:Here

Your MSL code, you can learn how to get that: Right Here

CDMA-Workshop

A USB Cable for you phone

*** UPDATE ***
Here is how to enable diagnostic mode in any of the AA51 GingerBread Releases
All thanks to Koumajutsu

To change your phone to DM mode for gingerbread
__a)Dial ##7678#
__b)Enter your MSL
__c)Select DM and your phone should reboot in DM mode

Ok Now we are ready to go:

Connect you phone with the USB Cable.

Put your phone in USB Debug Mode: Settings -> Applications -> development -> USB Debugging

1. Open CDMA-Workshop:

2. goto your Phones DialPad and dial ##8778# -> enter your MSL -> Select USB:

Enter your MSL

Select USB:

3. Go back to CDMA-WorkShop and Click On Port:

4. Select "Samsung Android USB Diagnostic Serial Port" (Mine was on COM5)

5. Enter your MSL in the Box and Click The Selection Box:

6. Click connect:

7. Click Read (your info should appear):

8. Click Other

9. Click Write under the PRL catagory

10. Chose a PRL file from your files:

11. You will get a message to confirm that it worked

12. Click The "X" to close CDMA-WorkShop

13. Click yes to restart your phone

14. Your Done!

Hope you Enjoy!

Nice work. Couldn't be simpler. You may want to add a step on how to back up the original before someone asks.

I don't get port COM5 I get Samsung Android USB Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) on COM20 and they say COM20 in just for registered version only so I can't connect. Why am I getting COM20 and not COM5 like xPureEvilx?

This is an excellent post. Thanks. Now to figure out what one works best for me.
One question currently. Does changing the PRL effect my service. will ST notice anything?

A PRL will just change the priority in which you phone connects to cell towers. Can be better or worse it just depends on where you are and which PRL you use.

Straight Talk shouldnt be able to detect that, but I just wouldnt call Tech Support and give them a reason to look at your info.

[Disclaimer: They could cancel your service for stuff like this, but its very unlikely this would ever happen. But proceed at your own risk.... Tip: If they ever do ask, Playing dumb can go a long way.]

Yeah, I've been with ST for awhile, had the Razr, which got excellent signal out here in the boonies, would still have if it weren't for a 3" downpour while camping. It was on the Verizon network, So I went ahead and got the Precedent, I have good signal everywhere except out her at the house. What do you think the chances are that I could flash a verizon PRL to the phone. From the research I've done so far, it seems that the phone has the same bandwidth. From whatr I gather, it's in the 800/1900.

since i have been checking PRL files most of them have the verizon, as well as Sprint, and Alltel, Cricket, and other networks already in them the problem is that you have to be within like 5 miles of a tower to get a decent signal. you could try a verizon prl but i am not sure that you would have service afterwards and would have to revert back to a sprint prl file, if you look in the PRLs post i posted some of the newer prls for sprint including a hybrid its 61677 you could try these and see if any of them help..

Tried the 61677, Notta on my end. When I find one that gets me connected out here. It will definitely be the one for everyone. I'm so far out in the woods. I have a tower in "Town" quotations are dependent on what everyone defines a town. It isn't a sprint tower. I opensignals, and it points out toward the nearest city. I run it about mile from thetower, My guess since Verizon is a5 bar connection. it is a tower verizon has vested interest in. I just changed over to the new PRL listed in the PRL files thread, we'll see.

I'll post later.

It does that to me if I use an invalid PRL file. Did you get the PRL file from this thread or somewhere else on the web?

I got the PRL's from this thread, from some further reading, it's indicating that my phone is not turning on in DM. I am going to try removing battery, rebooting, then dbl checking USB debugging. I'll see if that helps. Thanks

it takes more than usb debugging turned on to flash prls, follow each step of this Guide to the letter and it will work everytime.

Noob question here (first post, hi)...

What advantage does this method offer versus the "Update PRL" feature in [settings- about phone- system updates].

It seems like an awful lot of extra work to do something that can be done with just a few taps on your phone.

The theory is you can get use of towers not really designated for straight talk.

Did you download and install the Samsung USB drivers?
Are you using a Samsung USB cable(yes this makes a difference)?
Is your phone in Debug mode?
Did you connect the USB cable to your computer?
Did you try a different USB port on your computer?
Do you have any issues when connecting your phone as a mass storage device?

This is the most common problem when people cant connect:
Goto your Phones DialPad and dial ##8778# -> enter your MSL -> Select USB

You have to do this step every time, and if USB is already selected then unselect it and reselect it. (You have to do this everytime)

I believe that the issue is actually that some modded ROMS will not supply the Diagnostic Driver on the USB. I rooted and installed GB2.0, and the phone no longer provides the Diagnostic Serial Port. I confirmed this by using the same methodology with a stock phone. Apparently the GB ROM does not provide the full functionality. Only the Samsung Android USB Modem shows up.

I also checked the drivers, and USB connection history, and that also confirms that my Custom ROM phone simply no longer provides the Diagnostic Serial Port on the USB.

Hope this helps provide some direction. Open to suggestions.

I have spent the last 2 days trying to figure out why mine doesn't find the USB DM port. I just recently flashed the GB 2.0, and I can't flash any new PRL's. Now I can stop trying to resolve it.
Thanks

I love how the trolls made it so this post only has 2 stars, I am seriously considering removing all my posts from Android Forums. I have never seen a forum with this many children and trolls. Seems like only a few people here really appreciate the help and services we provide completely for free. Hadley seems worth the effort to even try on AF.

Ok Now we are ready to go:

Connect you phone with the USB Cable.

Put your phone in USB Debug Mode: Settings -> Applications -> development -> USB Debugging
Are these also the steps needed to be taken before doing "anything" via cdma workshop?

Default YIPPIE!!! an answered prayer.....

This is just what I've been looking for!!
I have a Samsung Straight Talk (Verizon) that I just replaced with a (Sprint) Precedent.
I do not get a signal any where in my area on the new phone, and ST says that they cannot "flash" my phone, therefore I have to purchase another one.

I will def. use the PRL from previous phone and try my hand at "FLASHING"....Ah, ha, ha, ha..Ah, ha, ha, ha.....(feelin a lil wicked now)

THANKS for all the good info....you are,... simply put,... way to informed!
(Im Im way to glad that you are!)

It really depends on your computer. You can change the COM port in Device Manager to whatever you want as long as it isn't in use

You may want to try the program listed in the link below. This is what I use to change prls on my prevail and it may help you. Just follow the instructions for your phone. [Tutorial] Easy PRL change without using CDMA WS

Any for Sprint. (PRLs are network-specific.) Whether the one you choose will work, or work better than the one you have now, is something no one can tell you in advance. It depends on the PRL and your location.

Sad cant use CDMA workshop

when i click read on CDMA workshop it says the device is not responding. i beleive its because im not really in DM like i thought. i had to use Script manager but like i said, it doesnt seem to work. and i cant dial the number to turn it on because it says the code or number is incorrect. so is there any other way to turn diagnostic mode on? im also running CM7 if that is important. im very new to roms and flashing prls.
