Money Switching from Straight Talk to Boost mobile on Samsung Galaxy Precedent, any tips?

Hey guys, a newbie in need of a hand here.

My Mum got a Samsung Galaxy Precedent for her birthday back in October, and really rather likes the phone. However, she does not like the service at all, especially after Straight Talk left her several very angry voicemails, stating that she was excessively using her unlimited access, and that they shut off her service if she continued. I honestly don't know how much she was using it, but she only did so at home, not at work. Long story short, Straight Talk decided that she was watching too many YouTube videos, and playing too many word puzzle games on her phone. Way to tease the buyer with 'unlimited goodies!', only to turn around and say otherwise to using apps that came pre-installed in the phone. :T

After reviewing other service options in within our price range, Boost mobile seems to be the best, and she'd like to switch the phone over to that instead of Straight Talk.

Question: What will I have to do to her phone so that I can switch the service provider? Will I need to root it, and if so, how? Any help is greatly appreciated! c:

That's a scam (look for a thread about it here). Unless she's doing a lot of data downloading, like watching videos (it's unlimited web browsing, not unlimited data), ST won't call her.

That's not allowed unless you're using wifi.

Not if you understand what they're saying. You can stream as much as you like on wifi, but you can not stream video on the phone connection. Read the back of the box, the second paragraph - "Unlimited talk, text and mobile web access". Nothing about unlimited streaming.

She can talk to Walmart about returning it for credit and buying a Boost phone and time. (She won't get any credit for the Straight Talk card, and they don't hide that fact.)

You'll have to replace it with a Boost phone. The Prevail is the closest one to the Precedent. Same thing with Boost, though - unlimited web, not unlimited streaming.

Are you sure the VoiceMail's are from ST?

I just find it hard to believe that they would call you about you tube videos, I have heard of people getting the contracts canceled for data usage, but they had a rooted phone and were using it to tether and that was after months of using the phone as there only source of Internet.

I do not belive these calls are from straight talk. now bear in mind I am rooted, I use wifi teather all day every day, i use over 20gb mobile data a month. And I have NEVER EVER EVER been called by straight talk. Now that being said they have shut my data off at the end of the month three times, they cut it back on AFTER I CALLED THEM, the third time I asked them to define the term unlimited, then I asked them to define false advertising, and have never had a problem since even with my extreamly high data usage,
now im not saying go out n teather
but I am saying that i stream video all the time, I use tons of data, Straight talk dose not call you, someone is scamming you. I would call straight talk and request a number change, a free service if used only once per year.
Furthermore, Boost and straight talk both run on sprint, but I have seen better service with straight talk over boost.

Side note, Though I have never had my data shut off, They have started to throttle me down to 2g after 4gb in the month.

My gf and i have boost and st. She got alot of calls saying her data was way over.. Its not st. It is a scam. I posted a thread in the forum about it this summer. Straight talk never ever asks any personal info. Thats the tip off. They dont even ask for her first name.

Avast has a call and sms block feature and is free in play.

We both tether, play youtube, etc. Never had an issue with the carriers yet. We have the same crappy service everywhere we go. I only stay with boost cuz im down to $35/mo and my prevail has a ton of support on here.

Ive never had data throttled yet, and im a data pig. but im expecting it eventually.

St is best if you dont wanna work your way down from $55 or 60, (what ever it is now)

Hope this helps,
dj

I do the same, tethering that is. I also got my data (3g) cut off once as well.
After calling and going over the meaning of unlimited versus the limits they put in the terms... then threatening to sue for bait and switch scamming, as well as false advertising, pretty much the same that several others here have done. they pretty much leave me alone now. I will say that it seems that I have been throttled as well. I called them several times and asked them if this was the case, they denied having throttled me and instead blamed my slow connection on the network traffic. Yeah right. I live in a small town, about 7000 pop. you are telling me there is too much data traffic here? yeah, whatever...
Any way, Strait Talk will back off when you challenge them on the unlimited advertising and the limits in the terms.
cheers!

Boost really isn't any better from my experience with them. But everybody I know, has had good luck them.

I am hoping to keep this thread alive on original topic. I have a rooted Prevail & would like to try the Precedent roms. What carrier information or files do I need to change back to boost after flashing a Precedent rom???

Install rom and replace the build.prop info with matching precedent values

Warning prevail roms may fry device
Flash at own risk.

Build.prop can be opend as txt files

Use notepad++ to retain oroginal file coding.
