Well about an hour ago I got the Gingerbread update for my samsung galaxy prevail.
So what changes does it do? I noticed the new appearance but that it.
What else does it do?
Anything major? Can we play flash now?

i mean would it make phone slow or make memory less or something else?

no reason not to upgrade, gingerbread seems to be more streamlined and faster and it is rooted check the shabby one click.
My wife's prevail got an OTA update from boost last night. She complained about how long it took and that everything changed (her words). So, I checked the phone and almost fell over when i saw that her phone was running Gingerbread. I guess Samsung actually relased something in a timely manner. Color me surprised
BTW, i am a Sprint Samsung Epic user and I STILL havent seen GB!!!

well if you get sick of waiting Koumajutsu has made some Odin Images for the new GB EJ06 update there's a stock and pre rooted and cwm version just go to the all things root part of this forum and there's an odin sticky the links are in there
FYI:
I got the notification that my phone was going to be updated, but sometime during the process (I was busy, and wasn't paying attention as to when) it fell over.
What I saw was a screen with a warning icon. The screen looked like a bootloader screen, with options to reboot, restore, etc. At the bottom it simply said install failed. None of the options were selectable, and I was eventually forced to remove the battery and let it restart. Needless to say I still have Froyo.
Yes, I know, I should have written down the messages. I do IT for a living and know better. Sorry I can't give more info.
Interestingly when I check for updates now it says I'm up to date, but System Info still shows 2.2.2 Froyo.

I had the same issue with an ota update. So I used the Odin method to get GB stock, and it worked. then did some of the tweaks listed in the All things root section. Just make sure you read the directions, and you should be good to go.

The OTA update does a metric buttload of md5 checks to verify that your system is basically unmodded (just the files that it's going to apply patches to) They did this because instead of sending an update with complete files (teh HUEG!), they pushed out an update.zip that only contains the binary differences to the files and .img files. Since doing that to a file that it's not intended for could cause the file to not run, rather than brick phones, the patch only works on stock phones.
The error was basically your phone's way of saying, "OMG, I can't update your phone because the files you have are not the ones I can safely update!"
Check out the stuff in the odin thread in all things root, you can get stock gingerbread there without all the safety checks, it's just a lot bigger
okay my phone is rooted, and i didnt get a notification for the gingerbread update. my android version still is 2.2.2. so do i have to manually install it, or will i be able to update it with a rooted phone? help please??

you will most likely not be able to update with a rooted phone.
Downloaded the Rooted GB version from the ODIN thread and GB works great. Netflix now works, I can view shows from my Uverse app, Skype uses my bluetooth headset (not sure if skype updated this before I got GB). Very happy with the update.
So I'm kind of a computard. Galaxy Prevail is my first smart phone, and I just got it a few days ago. Well already I got a notification of a new update, Gingerbread. The only thing I like is that now when you're typing, you can put the cursor on the exact spot you want much easier by sliding it, whereas before you had to try to tap the exact spot you wanted it on.
Aside from that one awesome little addition, I have not noticed any good differences. It has made my phone a lot slower, and it didn't use to freeze so much. Now it does. Everything takes forever to load and the update I downloaded nearly maxed out my phones memory capacity. Does anyone know what I should do?
Oh, and can anyone explain the terms "rooted" and "shabby"? I have no idea what this refers to.
If I can't get this thing to go fast again, I will have to find a way to revert it back to Froyo. Is that even possible? HELP!
Ok, so like the guy before me, the Prevail is my first smartphone. I haven't rooted the phone or done anything except download the modified version of flash player so I can watch stuff other than youtube. I have NOT gotten any update for Gingerbread, althoug my step-dad has, and he hasn't had his prevail as long as I've had mine. I'm wondering why I haven't gotten the update because no offense to Shabby or anyone else, I'd rather not root my phone to download GB from here unless I have no other choice. Can anyone help??? Does anyone know why my phone wouldn't update to GB???? I might add that I got updates for everything else earlier today from Layar to Twidroyd that I didn't want, but nothing for Gingerbread. Is my only hope in Rooting the Phone?

Netflix still sucks on my phone. Are you sure you have a Galaxy Prevail?
Super upset with this update now. It has turned my phone into a piece of garbage. I did a "hard reset" of my phone, which claimed it would restore all my factory settings. Instead I lost all my apps, but was still stuck with this horrible gingerbread piece of crap. Someone please help me.

factory reset tells you what its going to do before you do one lol

No, you don't have to root your phone if you do not want to. You can find a stock(non-rooted)version of the Gingerbread update in the same thread from above.
so does anyone know when these updates will be done because my wifes phone which she just got about month ago got the update but mine I have had for about 5 months has not got it ? any suggestions?
I talked to a boost representative yeaterday and she aaid that the GB update that just came out was a trial run to see how the people rwact to it in order to see if they will do it on a large scale. I vpte thet do it on a large scale. Also, I will be doing the download from here, but I don't know how to backup my files and apps. Can someone help with that?

I am rooted and have super user, and thats it. No rom, no mod, nothing changed. I got the update with no problem.

So it is ok to update an already rooted phone and it will stay rooted?
But Henryy states:

The rooted phone will get the update pushed to it, but the installation will fail (It will NOT unroot).
I have FROYO.EE14, am Rooted with Superuser installed. Nothing else, no Mods/Roms or anything. I have recently done a factory data reset, put in my google account info, did not install any apps, did not make initial connection to market yet.
Phone keeps nagging me to install the Gingerbread update that it downloaded, but I'm not sure if I should based on what I have been reading here and other posts, but going to what I quoted above, who is correct?
Will the phone stay rooted or not? Will it install? -One says yes, one says no, I'm not exp. enough yet to backup or Odin anything yet.
Also - I just got to the point where I felt comfortable enough as a newbie to go ahead with the install/mod of [MOD] Darktremor A2SD for Prevail, (to take care of space issue) but if I do, and then afterwards install the Gingerbread update, will this be effected in any way, can bad things happen?
Like to hear anyone's thought's on this.
thanks.

The update should not install on a rooted phone . If you want GingerBread , you will need to Odin back to stock , download the update and install it then re-root your phone . You can also Odin a pre-rooted version if you wish . That is the route I took .
Here is the link I used to install my rooted GingerBread .
EDIT: I am running rooted GB with CWM , CTMOD and App2SD . Everything is working as it should . Please take time to READ and follow the instructions provided in each of the threads . Too , READ the comments from the ones who have done this before you and learn from their mistakes .

The Following User Says Thank You to wetbiker7 For This Useful Post:
Ok, so then if I went and did all of that, then I would have to wait/get the updated Hroark ClockWorkMod & Darktremor A2SD for prevail gingerbread. Now I'm understanding, but it seems like a lot of work just to see if I even like Gingerbread at all. lol
Does anyone know how to make the phone stop nagging me to install the update?
thanks.

Not entirely correct, if you have not removed any bloatware you can get the update, it will install, however after it installs you will NOT have root anymore.
That however is not a problem as shabby's oneclick root will work on stock gingerbread fine.
You should take the update, see how you like it and if you DO NOT like it use Odin and go back to froyo.
Alright. I actually got the gingerbread update stock last night. I like it, but hate having the stock bloatware, I am assuming that I need to root to get rid of it, is there a way to root stock GB? If so can someone give me a link to directions on how to do this. Also let me know if I'm right about having to root to get rid of the bloatware. Thanks.

Maybe I'll wait. lol I keep reading more and more about new problems popping up, I can't take the chance just yet, this is my only phone, I have no internet other than this being linked to my pc, and I have no income, transportation, or other contact to the outside world other than this phone...... I think I will wait and keep reading a while.

i also have a rooted prevail but just super user no roms , no mods just one click root for the sake of wireless tether .. i got an update it went through with no problems but no tether

i have no memory problems as im only using 54mb .. not much installed on my phone ... after updating to GB i lose my wireless tether but just do the new OCR after update u will have root access again ( got my wireless tether working with no issues )
ps. if you do the new OCR you will get the last message "rm failed for /data/local/zergRush, No such file or directory" "You should have root" & the phone will be stock to samsung logo just unplug from computer & reboot (remove batt if necessary)
I have had my Prevail for a week now, the first thing I noticed was the fact that the Hot Spot was disabled, I ended up rooting the phone and installing wireless tether which works great but I wanted to know, if there is any way to get the native Hot Spot option to come up so I am able to use the phones actual hot spot feature instead of an app? Can a custom rom give me that original option, my girlfriends my touch through boost mobile has this hot spot option. I am running Gingerbread.ejo6 android version 2.3.5. And is this version of android the highest possible on this phone? Sorry, I am pretty fu$%in stupid with this. Thanks to all...
i just received the update 2 nights ago, at first i like the new update and styling. then i put it on the charger but when i took it off, it still said charging and the battery symbol was still acting as if it were plugged in. it vibrates randomly. the option for usb mass storage (that shows up when attached to computer) is always on my status bar. someone please help. my phones like new, never drop it, minimum use.
I installed the update, did a factory reset, then rooted. All seems good except there were 2 errors during the root process and afterwards it went into that constant logo-vibrate thing, took the battery out and powered up. The 1st is in the 4th line in the screenshot below a "segmentation fault" and the other is the one you mentioned in your post above botzgori, and the one I'm more concerned about:
rm failed for /data/local/zergRush, No such file or directory
The phone is updated with gingerbread, I do have root, I checked it with Root Checker from the market, superuser is installed and I only installed Pdanet3.02, nothing else.
I know this would probably go in the all things root section, but you mentioned the above error, and I got it. I looked around but did not see any info about the error(s),
Can anyone explain to me what it is, what it means, should I worry about it and how/what do I need to do to fix it.
I installed "Root Check Basic" as I said above, but I just noticed that when I click on Menu>Manage Apps then if I click on the "On SD card" tab, it has it listed on there, with a check box next to it, is this it's way of telling me that it can be moved to the sd card?
Just a quick note, dont know if this has already been covered or not, I started to install my purchased apps from the market and in the process I updated superuser, then I installed superuser elite, then opened it and from within that checked the binary update which showed it as 2.3xx (or something like that) and I clicked update, it ran through its process and rebooted the phone and now everything is in like a hyperdrive-mode. Really fast, everythng, animations, sfx, boot time, everything seems to have a lightning quick response time.

Those errors are perfectly normal.
The vibrate is normal as well, a restart, by pulling the battery or holding power is also normal.
Ok, thanks for that. Something new I noticed that really sucks is that I have lost all copy and paste fuctions, I use to just press & hold on something to bring up a menu, now those options in that menu are gone.
Anyone have this issue or know what to do about it?
