Default Kernel and Rom Help Please

I have ct mod 3.6 and kouma kernel 2.5 my question is this what exactly is a rom and a kernel im asking because i keep reading about cm7 and 10 etc. and other things. can my prevail install the rom/kernels? and does it change the whole layout of your phone and the apps installed with it? Im just asking cause i installed 3.6 and kouma and stopped there not looking into other roms and kernels now im getting the hang of this stuff fairly quick and id like to know what else i can do...

If there is a post about this already im very sorry its just i dont have the time right now to look for something not knowing if this is what im actually looking for? =/

ANd if i can install these things does anyone have any suggestions on to which rom/kernel i should get any help will be fantastic.
