Default S advance: Battery drain

Hi, I bought this phone (Samsung S advance, unrooted. Not planning to root it to prevent the warranty from being voided) about a month ago and realized that my phone can't last more than a day even with a very light usage and even tried to reduce my screen brightness. I have Advance Task Killer Pro and JuiceDefender Ultimate too, but still disappoints me. I tried to monitor with BetterBatteryStats, CPU Spy and GSam Battery Monitor. Below are the results.

1st condition: JuiceDefender Ultimate running.Wifi, Bluetooth, Data and GPS off. Didn't make any call if I'm not mistaken. Never play any games.

CPU Spy

BetterBatteryStats (Kernal Wakelock)

BetterBatteryStats (Partial Wakelock)

BetterBatteryStats (Other)

BetterBatteryStats (Process)

Battery Usage

Battery Usage Graph

2nd Condition: Juice Defender Ultimate turned off. Wifi, Bluetooth, Data and GPS off too. Made no more than 7calls with around 1min each and a few messages. Never play any games.

CPU Spy

BetterBatteryStats (Kernal Wakelock)

BetterBatteryStats (Partial Wakelock)

BetterBatteryStats (Other)

BetterBatteryStats (Process)

Battery Usage (Forget to take this screenshot together with the screenshot earlier. So I took this screenshot after plugging in my charger and also turned on my wifi for a few minutes.)

Battery Usage Graph (Forget to take this screenshot together with the screenshot earlier. So I took this screenshot after plugging in my charger and also turned on my wifi for a few minutes.)

GSam Battery Monitor (Forget to take a screenshot for the 1st condition)

Is there anything wrong with my phone or battery? I really hope that you guys can help me. Thanks.

I would get rid of both Advance Task Killer Pro and JuiceDefender Ultimate. You really don't need them with Android, and as you can see in the first one it is JuiceDefender that is killing your battery when it is being run. BatteryStats also clearly shows a lot of wakelock being caused by it. I would also get rid of the Hotmail app, I used to have that and it causes way too much wakelock unfortunately (although they may have improved it)- better off using the built in e-mail app.

Like mine you also have unusually high RILJ, although yours is even higher so possibly a rogue app doing something there.

I would leave data on- two reasons- not much point having a smart phone having it off! Secondly I think it causes some apps to misbehave as they're constantly trying to connect and can't.

With the new version of betterbatterystats it puts the app icon next to some things so it'll be easier to see what's going wrong. The partial wakelock info screen is normally the most helpful.

With light usage my battery lasts two days, one day with heavy usage.

Hi, thank you for your reply. Ya, I can see that JuiceDefender is taking a lot of the battery usage. But I had this battery issue since the 1st day using this phone. As you can see from my second situation, I purposely turned off JuiceDefender just to see whether this will make my phone last longer, but my phone still can't last more than a day, even with light usage (just a few phone calls and messages).

I turned the data off because I did not sign up for a data plan and most of the time, I'll be at home. So I'll use my Wifi if I want to connect to the internet.

By the way, from my Kernel Wakelock, I realized that the "radio-interface" and "svnet" are quite high. What are they and is it normal for them to be so high?

Besides, my Android OS battery usage also quite high (60%-83%). Are you facing this issue too?

"radio-interface" and "svnet" are the top two for me in Kernal Wakelocks so I wouldn't worry about that. Android OS is the highest on mine but only at anywhere from 30-40% usually...

If you have data off, maybe not worth having accounts syncing? I only have Gmail e-mails and calendar syncing, nothing else.

I don't know what else to suggest, try getting rid of a few apps you don't need or think might be using the battery and see what happens.

Is there any possibility that my Android OS is draining my battery as the percentage is double of yours? Mine always stay high and never go as low as yours before. Anything I can do to reduce this without rooting the phone?

Alright, I just turned off the sync.

Maybe one day I should try to do a factory reset and see if the problem still persist, but not now, because I'm still quite busy with my work. So if factory reset still failed to increase my battery life, then I think it's better for me to bring it to Samsung service center and see what they can do with this since my phone is still under warranty.

Hmmm there must be a reason it's so high, a factory reset might be worth a go, really annoying I know but if you can't find out what app is causing the drain...

Ya, I'll definitely try a factory reset after my busy week. Then I'll let you know the result. Thanks for helping.

It's ok. Hope that someone will post the solution here before I do a factory reset.

Default Battery drain issue

Hi, I am also facing the same issue, but in my case i have disabled all my Wifi,GPS, Data, acct sync and even the brightness. Even when the phone is ideal the battery is getting drained very fast. For 2 hrs in ideal state it is consuming 5 % of battery life.
Even i have killed the unwanted application services

Hi, did you try to monitor with BetterBatteryStats? If yes, is the result the same as mine? Have you tried factory reset?

Hi, I am not having any battery drain issue now. Not sure what happened, but I stopped using task killer and juice defender, maybe they are the cause. However, I still have problem with the battery status. The battery level dropped to a certain percentage after I restart my phone. I think I should wait for the official Jelly Bean update and hope that that will solve this battery issue.

It may sound as a joke but thats how i fixed my battery drain: Turn the phone off. Shut it down completely. The turn it back on.

Thats it. No joke. Since i bought it. time and again, the device starts draining battery. It cant even last a full day. Then i shut it down, reboot, and voilá, "leaking" stopped.

Im not sure what causes it but maybe some system apps goes rogue undetected after some use and starts killing the battery.

The same solution worked with a coworker who bought the same model ate the same day at the same store with me.

Give it a try

And is your data turned on, even when you don't use it? I get 12 hours out of it with data on the whole time. But now I turn it off with a widget when I don't use it and it lasts 24 hours.

Then there probably is a rogue app, do you remember when this problem started and which apps you installed around that time? Try deleting those apps to see if it solves the problem.

Does your battery become really hot? Especially next to the camera? I had this problem and I had te remove batteries a couple of times before it went back to normal.

If this doesnt help you, you could buy the app betterbatterystats and start running it as soon as you take your phone off the charger, until it is dead. Then betterbatterystats will give all kinds of information which you can best show to the xda developers forum ( I dont know if there are people here who understand this and help you).

I bought my handset about 1 n half mths back.. worked quiet well for abt 25 days with battery lasting about 14-17 hours when fully charged on very light usage. ( No data usage, so 2g/3g off, excepting wifi for abt 2-3 hrs, minimal calling, video, etc) ( had read in forums it has moderate battery life. so i was ok with above)
but since last 15 days or so the battery life has really gone for a toss. now with 2g on and even at full battery charge it only lasts a full night ( abt 9 hrs and when not in use).
also it has started heating up a bit in the back near the camera lens as some1 mentioned.
become a real headache now
