Uhh... there are plenty of places for water to get in. There is no reason to believe that the Aviator is waterproof. If it were, it would have been marketed as such. I think you just got lucky, but if you want to confirm that, go ahead and soak it overnight and let us know what you find.
EDIT: Also, for what it's worth, the normal protocol for a wet phone is to take the battery out right away, and make sure not to put it back until you know that the phone is totally dried out. I've heard that packing it in rice works well to get moisture out because it absorbs the water.
