Default USB storage issues

I am trying to move or clean out my USB storage. My phone keeps telling me its full. But when i go into the folder nothing is there. I keep getting errors when downloading apps saying the usb storage is full but i have a 16 gig sd card but cant free up any space from usb to sd card. I love this phone but cant seem to find a way to download and store directly to my sd card. I read the post above about something like this but didnt solve my issue. Please help!
