Default Galaxy S running really slow

Hey guys,

I just got my phone about 4 days ago, and when opening apps, unlocking, opening contact lists etc etc, it just lags heaps. Does anybody else have the same issue? Could it just be an optimization thing or something?

You might want to try this (you'll need root) Got the 'stalling' problem? Rooted? Try this... - Android @ MoDaCo
Along with a task killer program to periodically kill apps

My SGS run pretty fast and smooth.

Why don't u install Advanced Task Killer... and close down any apps that are not needed. It helps loads in my opinion.

Actually, after installing Advanced Task Killer and getting rid of a few things it seems to be substantially quicker (killed music player, layar, messaging, fring and a few other things). Thanks for the help

Just be aware that the reason apps are staying in your RAM is because that lowers the battery use when starting those applications again. Therefor it's not advisable to overuse a task killer.

some of the apps on mine run slow as heck ...even after using a task killer.

The worst is Dolphin HD ....it takes about 8 seconds to load and on exit it takes 10 or more seconds.

'mobisle notes' also is very slow to open, and switch between screens and exit.

the same operations on the nexus are instantaneous.

could it be the apps themselves are not fully compatible with the galaxy or is the galaxy formware just that slow?

I'm having real problems with the mail, sms and other system apps being slow, so i'm beginning to wonder if it's a system issue tbh.

I found the Samsung widgets really slowed it down, mainly the daily briefing one. Once I got rid of them it sped up massively.

I just deleted the google search widget from the home screen, and it's made a massive difference actually. Have you just deleted the widgets, or have you turned them off somewhere on the phone as well?

Just took them off the screen, it's when they try to update that the phone freezes.

How is the phone's speed and performance in comparison to the HTC Desire? I have seen a few mentions on various forums and websites that it's a little slow and laggy when compared to the Desire.

The widgets are eating up the RAM memory in the phone. Just close them out and you'll notice a big increase in speed. Also get a task killer installed on your phone it should help manage RAM memory. Once 2.2 in launched, you'll see a greater increase in speed as it enables the full use of memory greater than 256MB.

My GF has this phone i'm rockin the desire and I noticed that her phone is really slow to open applications, or download things from the market place. I can't see any reason why this should be and she has removed all widgets from her home screens so that only the first screen has anything on at all and thats just apps.
She has now installed task killer and still the phone is slow.

When she first got the phone it was quick but after a couple of days use it slowed right down. My desire in contrast is snappy despite having live wallpaper and being used quite heavily alot more than my GF's phone anyway.

We both however suffer from the problem of getting alot of missed calls an some times are unable to make calls despite having a couple of signal bars. which i think is a general android issue now in areas where 3g is not available.

Anyone know what this could be or know if Samsung are working on a fix?

I have a feeling it'll probably all be wrapped around the Froyo update which from other threads appears to be late August / early September. I guess if enough people complain they might take note! Have you contacted Samsung?

well there are some good news. latest firmware from europe seems to have solve the lags. at almost the same time someone over at modaco found a way to mount a sdcard to hold the data files. separately both seems to solve the lag. but wait...... some brave guys combine both solutions together, and guess what...running the quadrant benchmark, it show even higher than 2.2 nexus!!! details are too technical to explain here, but if you are interested or are daring enough check out modaco and xda-developers under the respective galaxy s forums

Default Really fast

No issues with lag or anything at all. I may not even root (at least not yet). I saw "somewhere" that there may be "Market lost" issues. Has anyone who has rooted found anything like that and is there a fix?

Mine is laggy too but a cheap solution is to switch the phone off and on again!!
It sure helps!!!!

Default Dont buy it please!

Hello everybody,
I have Samsung Galaxy S from Movistar Spain.
I am very frustrated because the phone is really really slow. I dont recomend anybody to get it!
The first problem is that dont matter if u have widgets or you use a task killer, by definition it lags a lot.
I have deleted all widgets, and killed all task, and if I open the contact list to call a frind, sometimes it can take more than 10 seconds!!!!!
When I receive a call, the phone slows down, and it's difficult to use the slide to response.
When I execute applications, i get always at least 5 seconds of black screen, and I counted one time waiting till 18 seconds to open the Photo Gallery (with only 45 photos).
I know it is not only an Android problem, friend with Desire don't has the same issues.
I am wating to Froyo to see if its performance is better... otherwise i will return it or sell it if I can....

Its the second Samsung I have... sure it will be the last.

Hi all again,
Well, good news, i found my particular performance problem. In my situation I installed a keyboard called "Swift Key beta". This was a very complete keyboard, but the problem I've identified is that every time I started a new app, Andoid loads they keyboard, that gets about 50 Mbytes of RAM because of the prediction system.

Because of that, every time i started the app, it takes about 1-2 secs getting free ram and then loading the keyboard and then loading the app, .... -> At lest allways 6 - 7 seconds waiting the phone... CRAZY!!

I have uninstalled the swiftkey and i am very surprised that the performance of the phone is now very good, i have som little lags, but now for me are acceptable. (at maximum, some times 1-2 secs).

I am having some issues with the GPS too, i have read that samsung has notified som problems and they are going to publish a patch.... so lets wait.

I can't understand how its possible to put a phone in the market that has unresolved problems. All companies has to learn a lot from Apple...

I would of agreed with you on apple, but not now after their latest f up with the iphone 4. I've well and truly fallen out with apple now after their complete and utter disrespect to customers.

My sgs did lag a little when I first bought it and installed loads of apps, now its fine after a firmware update.

Default Does upgrade to Froyo help?

Hello;

I watched Sigrid's video above and my SGS (Bell Canada) behaves EXACTLY like her dutch version. OFF/ON, task killer, nothing helps.

My OS info: Kernel 2.6.29, Firmware 2.1-update1. Build number ECLAIR.UGJH2.

I wonder if upgrade to 2.2/Froyo will help. It is supposed to address speed issues, but I saw postings that mentioned no great benefit when it comes to speed.

Can anyone report whether UPGRADE TO FROYO helped with speed in particular?

Thx,
M

I found a hard reset speed up the phone A LOT.

My phone was basically only about a week old and it started to lag. Lag fix (OCLF) didn't work too well as after a few days it slowed down again. (BTW...I don't recommend this app as a lag fix with ext2 virtualization is not a good idea).

Ever since reseting my phone by going to PRIVACY-->FACTORY RESET, my phone has been super quick with no lag.

You will need to reinstall everything but it's worth it.

Upgraded to 2.2 a few weeks ago (scandinavia) and I can report that the lag issues are still very present. Samsung claims to be working on a fast rom as we speak to change out the crappy file system.

Turning phone ON and OFF worked. After 13 days, phone became sluggish and lagged.

Checked Running Services:
Available Memory: 0MB

Checked OSMonitor App:
Free Memory: 0MB.
Download Manager using a whopping 150MB.

With Phone ON...Press/Hold Power button
Choose Power Off
Galaxy Screen Pops Up and then off...Powered Down

Press/Hold Power Button (seconds)
Phone Provider Advertisement Pops Up
Galaxy Screen Pops Up
Phone Home Page Pops Up

Runs smooth again like when I first got it.
Didn't loose any apps

Running Services:
Available: 100MB +71MB

OS Monitor:
Free: 163MB
Download Manager Process is now gone

get Froyo JPO build, add CF-ROOT kernal for JPO, and add the OCLF

its as close to perfect as ive found.

very minor lag (only noticeable if your looking closly) when switching screens sideways.

otherwise, app drawer, opening messages, contacts, programs, etc is all very VERY snappy.

Its been discussed on another forum and this one that leaving USB debugging mode on helps quite a bit with lag issues and helps with battery life. It made no difference on my phone but I never had lag issues to begin with so maybe some of you with lag issues can try it out and see if there's any truth to this.

otherwise, app drawer, opening messages, contacts, programs, etc is all very VERY snappy.
if you have jpo, i recommend uprgrading to jpx. i have been with jpx for queit sometime now from jpo. i have tried jpu and jpy from jpo but only at jpx i did not have any problem at all.

Those that know me will remember I said back in November Samsung were working on sorting out the RFS.
Well it looks like it's now officially coming in the form of an update that will finally sort out all the issues with speed.

Look out for the official upgrade coming out in Kies.

Is this the 2.2.1 update or something new coming after that one? I'm still running 2.2.

I have updated my Uk 02 Galaxy S to latest OS and it runs really slow most of the time.
With very little installed 3rd party wise, so I asked Samsung and here is what they told me..

Dear Patrick,

Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the
following assistance.

With regards to your query, it is obvious that there is something wrong with your software that requires a soft
reset which is switch the phone off and remove the battery and the SIM card and then reinsert and then switch
on again.

Kindly know that if there are many applications operating at the same time, it will make the mobile works
slowly and for sure also the function of the touch screen too.

So please kindly be sure that you are closing all application and please go to the Android Market in the phone
and download TASK KILLER, it is an application used to close all the applications (not just minimizing them)
so it will enhance the phone operation.

Kindly know that also the full memory card will lead to slow in the function of the phone so if you have a full
memory please try to delete some of the stored files in the memory.

If still the soft reset does not help so you will have to do a Restore Factory Settings for your phone.

We advise that you kindly back up your files and apply a Factory Reset to the phone to be able to resolve this
issue.

In order for you to be able to back up the data on the PC use the KIES software and you can download this
software from the link below

I'm utterly astounded Samsung tech suggested you download a Task killer as an official approach to minimising lag! O_o

I'm wondering if he meant 'Program Monitor' which actually is part of the Android OS.

Task Killers are a No-No in the eyes of Google and Developers such as Samsung.
To say to use a Task Killer is totally and unquestionably incorrect.

You don't happen to know the department and name of the person who gave you this advice by any chance?

Thank you for that info, I shall pass this on.....

Also, you are quite correct in wondering... As I mentioned, both Google and Developers don't like Task Killers and to be fair Froyo onwards simply does not need them. So it would be correct that Froyo would not allow closure to some of it's Apps.

Bear in mind though... this does not apply to non-essential Apps or those that do not thread themselves within the Memory fragmentation. These have always been able to close. I do it all the time if I find an App is being troublesome.

My kids and have 4th gen ipod touchs and I know there do not have a phone in them. but I do like the fact you can double press the home button on them and close any apps that show up in there. Or if you do not want info while you are not using the apps, you will not get it.

I have noticed the number of apps on android market that tell you that they will run at start up. Like facebook, sky news etc which to be honest I can uderstand facebook but sky news. I should have the option to stop these programs starting at boot. Just like I can do on a Windows based PC with msconfig...

And I find the Galaxy does take a long time to boot up...And why the start up video what a waste of time that is....

If it was not for the fact the iPhones 500 new I would go back to Apple. And I got this Galaxy secondhand from CEX for half that price.

"And its on Giffgaff (02) which is great for unlimited internet and texts etc from 10 a month pay as you go.."

Follow my thread on how to solve lagfix problems. Does not require root but does require 2.2 I believe.

Maybe somebody already wrote about this solution, but I don't have time to read whole thread.

I got Galaxy S as well and had this same problems. Yesterday I've found on some forum that location services (GPS or wireless networks) eat your CPU (sometimes 80%). For some reason it is called very often. After unchecked this options and reset my phone its fly as a new one. Unfortunately I have to manually switch it on when I need it.

If somebody don't know how to turn it off:
Press "context menu button" (bottom left one) when you on home screen.
Settings > Location and security >
uncheck "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satelites"

hope this will help.
