It took me about 5 hours but the solution is simple. Ignore Kies it doesn't work anyway.
1) Plug the the usb cable from the phone to your pc
2) On the samsung galaxy ace, at the home screen, there is a drop down bar at the top of the screen. Drag it down amd press on where it is says, 'USB connected, select to copy files to/from your computer. Press connect storage to PC and wait for the green man to turn orange.
3) On the PC (for XP users), go to my computer and then click on the disk drive that you plugged the usb into. This should then bring up the list of folders that are on your phone under my files. Transferring music for example, simply paste all of your files into the folder marked 'media'. Just make sure your music files are mp3 format or they may not work on the phone.
Thats it. You should now be able to transfer files!
You can get to Mass Storage by going to SETTINGS/WIRELESS AND NETWORK/USB SETTINGS and select MASS STORAGE
or SETTINGS/USB SETTINGS if you have 2.3.3 or later
Connect your phone to your PC and it will install drivers
The press CONNECT on your phone's screen and off you go
In this mode the phone acts just like any drive on your PC
So you can create folders to store your files - 'SOUNDS' for music - 'IMAGES' for photos etc - this will make it easier when you want to find files for deleting or adding at a later date .
DO NOT forget to press DISCONNECT before you unplug your phone OK !!!!
Cheers

This ONLY happen to Windows 7's user. To solve this problem. Please go to :
1. My Computer at your PC.
2. Open C: drive
3. Open C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86) - for 64bit Windows
4. Open Samsung
5. Open Kies Folder
6. Find a file name : Kies.exe
7. Right-Click the file then Choose Properties
8. Then select Compatibility
9. In Compatibility Select Run this Program Compatibility mode for : Windows XP Service Pack 2
10. Click apply and ok
Now try run your Kies and connect your device.. Voila... it's working...
This worked for me after numerous installs and uninstalls. I obtained the download by going through the W7 compatibility checker. The USB lead has to be plugged directly into the computer and NOT through a hub. I also had to disconnect any external hard drives attached by way of USB. Connect your phone by way of the USB cable then open KEIS software. It worked straight away. Tried it again with external drives connected. It wouldn't work. Tried again with phone USB connected to a hub. Wouldn't work. Tried again with original setup (directly connected to computer and no external drives plugged in). Worked perfectly. Hope this helps because I was tearing my hair out as well.......!!
- Changed compatibility for kies.exe
- removed SD card
- Searched for and removed files with long names (using the tool I found somewhere in here, there were a few in my DCIM folder: thumbnails)
- Stopped all apps from running like noled and widgetlocker and stopped all programs running on my PC (like instant backup)
- Uninstalled/reinstalled/uninstalled/reinstalled kies, so many times I lost count
- Ran the troubleshooter to reinstall Samsung drivers more than once or twice.
- plugged/unplugged device and tried every USB port on my PC
So it appears that MY windows 7 / 64bit laptop will just.not.work. so I am going to load up my older windows vista 32bit laptop later and try it with that.
The phone works, I don't have any real problems with it (other than poor battery and how much is an update going to fix that)
And because it was a private sale and I do not have the receipt, I cannot chance bricking this phone and from what I have read it is pretty risky to try to update it.
I will replace it next spring when my current contract (for another phone) is up and hopefully will be able to sell this for a few dollars.
So eclair it is So much for being a cool kid LOL (I am just not ready for a custom rom but if someone came over and did it FOR me I would give it a go LOL)
i rooted my SGS2 in Odin with insecure file GT-I9100_XXKE4_insecure and everything works like a charm when i connect on kies it not recognize my device i tried everthing reinstall driver usb storage mode and so on..... in the end i flash back original kernel GT-I9100_XXKE4_original connect on kies and everything works superb like a before
that's the solution my problem with Kies i hope that i help someone of you
I had problems with Kies - took a hour to install and then didn't run - so I tried Sony Ericsson's MyPhoneExplorer as mentioned here: Problem with Samsung Kies
This works perfectly for my SGS+ and I have now synced my contacts, messages and photos, all via wifi (haven't tried the bluetooth option).
Thanks for pointing out this great solution
This fixed my Samsung Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V connection via USB problem. It worked beautiful for me using the WiFi Connection Method.. USB is a joke
Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy Si, I couldn't get Kies to work no matter what, my computer froze as soon as I opened the program and I could transfer anything to or from my phone when I connected it. My boyfriend has a Sony Ericsson Experia and has Media Go installed, we found out that the Samsung is compatible with this so I can transfer everything to and from my phone using this. It is a much more usable program and doesn't freeze your computer so download this if you are having problems with Kies.
I had this same problem, watched Kies connect once, but never connected again, kept stalling. Tried Mozilla, Chrome and Explorer, all with the same result. Then I noticed lots of Java icons stacked up in the taskbar, and under closer inspection, lots of instances of java started in the task manager.
Turns out the problem is the Java cache on your PC, it doesn't clear after you drop the connection, and prevents further re-connection attempts. Uninstall the Java on your PC and it all works fine. Not sure what you need to do if Java is essential to you.
A chap called Dennis solved it this way.
The Kies (and all other MTP) problems in winXP is usually solved by re-installing the MTP drivers.
They are part of the setup for WMP11.
Im not positive, but im guessing, that North America is not Samsungs largest market. And that the English speaking market, which is odd if you consider that English is the most uniform language in the world, comes next to the Asian market. Anyone know if this is true...
Anyways i have found that, first off, I love Samsung products, and everything i own is Samsung, but their customer service is very poor, and their website and kies seem to go nowhere. Im in Canada, and Kies installed, as well as all my devices registered on my online 'Account'. But there is really no point in doing this. Kies does not even find upgrades for my phone months and months after the new firmware is floating around. I dont know if this problem lays with Samsung, or with my WSP, which is Rogers. I am just annoyed with the lack of effort and functionality they have brought to us with Kies and mainly their website. Anyone agree?
hi guys.
I have Samsung Galaxy S and I also complain of kies, it doesn't work
and once I open it a message appears saying kies stopped working, I
tried almost all solutions mentioned here but failed.
I also like to ask what if I use Sony Ericsson phone explorer, will I be
able to update the firmware of my Samsung galaxy s?
- Couldnt Snyc my contacts as it takes >48hours to BLOODY SYNC 1000 phone contacts. I started last evening and IT IS STILL BLOODY SYNCHING AT ONLY 42% PROGRESS... WTF. WHAT KINDA PISSASHIT PROGRAMME TAKES >48 HOURS TO DO A SIMPLE CONTACTS SYNCH?
- Prior to synching, I had to first get My PC to recognise the pissashit Galaxy Tab. Tried 20 over times and IT REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY GALAXY TAB. HAD PLUGGED OUT AND REPLUGGED USB CABLE, START/RESTART PISSASHIT SAMSUNG KIES, AND FINALLY MANAGED TO GET IT TO RECOGNISE MY TAB 7.7 AFTER ABOUT 2 BLOOMING HOURS.
- As i am typing, THE PISSAHSIT GALAXY TAB KIES IS STILL SYNCHING AT 42% PROGRESS. KNN.
- I PROPOSE EVERY USER HERE GET TOGETHER TO FORM AN ONLINE PETITION TO SACK THE PISSASHIT KIMCHEE SAMSUNG CEO FOR ROBBING US OF SO MUCH MONEY AND CREATING SO MUCH UNHAPPINESS FOR EVERYONE.
- At the EXCRUCIATINGLY SLOW rate the PISSASHIT samsung kies is synching, I figure I will have to leave my computer on for 3 days and 3 nights to finally complete 1 bloody synchronisation. SACK THE SAMSUNG CEO!
Well don't know if samsung has fixed the problem now but i also had kies installed and it would not open and i could not unistall it. about an hour ago i plugged my phone into my laptop and went to the samsung website.clicked on samsung galaxy phone then manuels and downloads, then downloaded kies again after hitting the save and run button. on the last screen where it says do you want kies to run i pressed the home button on the phone and unlocked it then pressed yes on the laptop. kies opened straight away and reconised my phone and asked me would i like to upgrade the phone(ics) which i pressed yes and bingo finally got the ice cream sandwhich and syncronised all my contents to it.
don't know if this was just luck or they have finally sorted out kies

No they haven't fixed Kies. This is now July 3rd 2012 and I have the same problems. I have Vista but I know for certain it is not a Vista problem. When I plug my device (Galaxy S2) into the laptop Kies asks me to plug in a device. I tried restarting it but no success. Yet when I try to do a connection troubleshoot, it tells me to disconnect my device.
What kind of testing has been done on this piece of garbage software. Has it been tested at all or did they just get a class of 10 year olds to create it and then send it out.
It is without question, the most inefficient and unprofessional price of software, I have ever (EVER) experienced. If Samsung make their phones like they made this piece of rubbish, then their sales figures will nosedive.
I've tried everything, including contacting their support area, who seem to know nothing and are completely incapable of resolving problems.
I give up.
After weeks of trying, I read this thread. I tried switching off WiFi as suggested, restarted the phone, restated the PC opened Kies and THEN plugged in the phone USB. Kies saw it straight away so I was at last able to access the update firmware - pity there is no update for my phone (i5800)!!!!!
Worked like a charm! Thanks!

I recently downloaded Kies in order to transfer some files across from PC to SGS.
When I connect the SGS to the USB the SGS nothing happens until I unlock the SGS, whereupon the screen goes mental, scrolling through all the UI screens. The Vista PC doesn't recognise it either. Thinking it could be a software clash, I tried the download on my Vista laptop and exactly the smae thing happens.
