Confused Connecting Galaxy S to PC

Ok, first smart phone owned and I am trying to connect it to the PC to transfer some wallpapers and later some ringtones. Can't get it to recognise the phone though.
In Kies (running the most up-to-date version), it never gets past the 'Connecting the device' part, and never actually ends up connected.
If I try using it on mass storage mode, the device is found in my computer in XP (though it shows up twice) but it doesn't see a disk and asks for a disk to be inserted, possibly because as yet the device only has it's internal sd card in it not an extra one.
So...

1. Does the connection on the device reset everytime it goes back to idle? I'm getting strange results in mass storage mode with 2 devices shown and then vanishing as the phone 'sleeps'.
2. Do you need an external or extra sd card for it to be visible/accessible as mass storage in that mode?
3. I can connect it to my wifi network easily enough...I gather I can't actually access it as a storage device on the pc via the network?

In Mass Storage mode, once the device is recognized on your PC, extend the notification area on your phone (press top of the screen on your GS and slide it down), then select "Mount USB" (can't remember exactly the text, but it is USB related), then you will be able to access the phone internal memory and the SD card from your PC.

Not a problem, I had myself the same question when I started to use the GS and I got the answer here. To use personalized ringtones, have a look here: Personalize ringtones and alerts... And for wallpapers, you can look at this: [How to] Make a high res Galaxy S wallpaper yourself from any photo or picture..

You can access your files via the Interweb if you use DropBox which is available on Android Market, and it's free.

Thanks again. Didn't realise wallpapers could be .png format and so losless. Probably explains why some of the ones I changed to .jpg look a bit pixellated and rubbish.
For ringtones I usually just do 30 second snippets edited in Audacity. Hard to get the volume right though. I'll have to check to see what sort of music works best though, classical, rock or electronic.

Default Finally an answer.

This works! Been trying to figure this out for 3 days. T-mobile tech support didn't have a clue. Thanks!

I found something about the mounting on here but can't remember the thread.

Unfortunately, I sent my SGS back a couple of days ago, so am currently without until the replacement arrives. However, I did find an app on the android marketplace which may have been called '...... mount', 'auto mount' or 'SD mount' and this worked perfectly everytime.

No longer the need to drag the notification bar down. So there is a free app out there but I'm afraid I can't recall what it was called.

Edit - Just found the app on my camera (took photos of the screen to remember the apps I had on it), its called "Auto Mount" - Have fun!

Kies worked for me once and I managed to update the firmware. Haven't worked since then.

I've found that I need to be using Samsung's TouchWiz UI launcher in order to connect to kies. Normailly, I use ADW and have to switch back to TouchWiz with Home Switcher in order to connect.
