Default Connection, Stalling, Lag- Mixed Answers All over... Whats the solution to this rubbish phone?

As title says...
Everyone has been experiencing the same rubbish...

Great phone at first working very quickly, and connecting to my laptop...

Now...

Doesnt connect to my laptop as a mass storage device... Kies is rubbish too as it doesnt work...

The phone was so quick and now barely can get back to the home screen or view contacts!

Why is it doing this all of a sudden?
I have very few apps, regular number of widgets... do not say remove widgets as i bought this phone for the damn widgets!

Now... how can this all be cured. I dont want to root the phone. As the phone should be working from factory...

Will a software update help?
will this cure lagging?
will this cure my connection problems?

I love this phone but its really getting to me!
I dont want to do any complicated programming as it shouldnt be necessary on a new phone!

Everyone wants solutions but there doesnt seem to be, and everyone just says wait for froyo, but i need my phone to work NOW!

Dare i say it... im starting to miss my apple iphone 3g!

I've found that a few apps cause the phone to slow down significantly.
Facebook almost stops my phone doing anything.

I just use a task killer (on the marketplace) and make sure there are no tasks loaded/running. That seems to sort it out.

sorry but this is not the response i want. I dont want to stop using widgets like facebook, as this is the reason i got the bloody phone for. If i didnt want live updating widgets, then i would have stayed with the iphone.

The various widgets should still work, even if you kill the associated task.

Ed: I've moved to Android from iOS and am finding it quite flakey in comparison too. I think Samsung rushed the TouchWiz OS onto this phone for release without thorough testing. Hopefully the update will fix things. Currently I'm constantly having to find workarounds for problems.

ok... stop blaming the slow down of the phone on the widgets...

This phone has a 1ghz processor and 500+mb ram... Its more than capable of handling the 2 widgets i use.

What is needed to get this phone to connect to a windows vista laptop and will firm ware resolve all the lag issues?

The 1.3.x version of Facebook seems to have serious issues (battery, cpu and data).

That was causing me some problems and I wouldn't exactly blame Samsung for that...

Hard reset will sometimes help.
After the reset you can check if it works as it should be.

Than install your apps. Check again.

Could be a software issue.

Great phone! ( Allthough Samsung service-support is bad)

Who's blaming the widgets?

All I'm saying is some apps, like Facebook, are badly coded + take up yer memory + cpu time. Kill them and your phone will work better.
Nothing, at all, to do with widgets.

To connect yer phone via usb to a vista laptop - plug the cable in, choose mass storage then when it says connected, pull down the menu at the top, click the message in there, then click mount. This should mount the internal SD card so it can be used as mass storage.

Ed: Worth noting that you can't access the 2gb reserved for the OS.

ok...
firstly i dont have a facebook app.
secondly i have done a hard reset and the phone has persisted at behaving slow.

When it comes to connecting to vista i know the process of going about it...
But when i get to the stage of pulling the menu down after connecting to the computer.
I then click the message, but nothing appears. It doesnt let me mount the phone.
When i click the message in order to mount the phone, it just goes directly back to the main screen without offering me a mounting option!
Weird no?

The problem here, is that in the various threads you've posted you're calling the phone crap and saying that nothing works the way it should and blaming Samsung.

You're not really making it clear that what seems to be happening here is issues with your particular handset and not issues with the Galaxy S as a phone.

So, you just keep getting answers explaining how things should work and you keep bitching about Samsung in general. Vicious cycle.

There is something wrong with a combination of the following:
Your handset
Your 'Vista' laptop(....)
The way you are using your phone

I think you should send it back. If you're serious about having a Galaxy S, get a replacement and see where you stand. If you're not, get something else.

Smart Phone Needed - Modelsport UK Forum

Quite enjoyed this, 3rd post down.

Yes, I know, I'm a bit of a lazy slacker this afternoon looking around for this sort of thing and very much trolling but hey, was amusing.

edit:
Yes that was my post showing how much i rate and still do rate the phone... But as all these problems have all been within the last 3 days... and after samsung telling me nothing could be done and i just have to deal with it as this is what was expected of the phone, has realllly pissed me off!

hey man!
WTF! i have only rated this phone from day 1! ive only called the phone crap in this thread because it is starting to get to me.

Samsung are all f*cking idiots! They were no help at all. They said they had no idea what was causing the phone to lag. I followed and listened and wasted my f*cking sweet time with them and nothing fixed the problem.

Karnka... did you just say that i am the only one experiencing these issues??? Are you ******ed? Everyone is having the same damn issues as me! have a look on the forum.

People have issues with the phone lagging a week or two after purchase
People have issues with kies recognising the phone...

Seriously man..... what are you talking about... it is not just my phone

My laptop is fine...
The way i use my phone is the same way anyone will use a phone... make calls, send emails, i dont play games i dont have un necessary widgets or apps. So i havent overloaded the phone. I dont use live wallpapers... my screen is always on the lowest lighting setting, i have no widgets as of now (to see if it would speed up, didnt make a difference)

So what is the problem?
Am i running old software?
does updated software actually help solve these issues???
may that be the problem with connecting to my laptop?

So, at least download a process explorer so you can see what's actually running on your phone? There might be something obvious there.

You have a very confrontational way of writing. Normally I'm sympathetic with people having problems or leave well enough alone.

In this case I was annoyed, shouldn't have wasted my time tbh.

I didn't say you were the only one having issues, but given that a lot of people don't have the issues you complain about (especially the mass storage problem) then there is something different.

Now stop whinging.

oh stop trying to behave maturely on a forum... You know yourself you didnt offer any advice that i was seeking, and just ruined my thread, and wasted my time for looking for a solution for these problems... I dont need you bloody sympathy haha... why are you trying to take the high road here and come off on top?
The mass storage problem has appeared within threads where people are complaining about kies not working either. Yes thats right, i have searched for a solution through previous threads before wasting space here.

@hog - when you say process explorer... do you mean something along the lines of advanced task cleaner pro? i have that installed, and use it frequently to kill apps when i am trying to save battery, or know that i do not need any form of update etc....???

hmmmm...
i have tried what you have suggested... maybe not you, but what other users have suggested members with similar problems. I tried to solve this before placing another "help me my phone is *****ing out" thread.

Yet, after all the things you and others have recommended... it still continues to lagg.

So this is why i am asking whether an update of some sort would solve this issue as everything else stated on the forum has not worked.

"when you say process explorer... do you mean something along the lines of advanced task cleaner pro? i have that installed, and use it frequently to kill apps when i am trying to save battery, or know that i do not need any form of update etc....???"

Hmmm... I was thinking about getting this phone but I dont know about this whole lag issue. I was watching some videos on it and did notice some lag.

How do you guys find the build quality in comparison to the HTC desire?

Hey OP, if you're thinking of getting something else may I recommend the desire, bc it's awesome.

'one click lag fix' sorts the lag issue (for me anyhow). Froyo (android 2. 2) due out soon for the SGS. will sort it as well. Anyone who's thinking of buying this phone should ignore the OP, he seems to have issues

i was very tempted to do the lag fix, but i dont want to possibly mess up any of the software...
I will wait for the froyo upgrade most likely... the phone is currently stalling, but its so minor and only on occasion... It was no where near as bad as my iphone 3g so i can deal with it till froyo is released...

Isnt it due soon?

Just to add something positive to this thread. Iv had my sgs since the beginning of July and it has been great. It was running firmware JF3 when I first got it and the only problem I had was with the WiFi, it would randomly turn itself on, so I updated the firmware to JM1 through kies and that sorted it out, Yes I did say through kies, it went like a charm.
I have kies installed on a windows 7 machine and have no problems with it. If your having problems with kies not connecting to your phone it is usually the drivers that have not installed properly, once you get them installed properly it should work ok.
The update to JM1 has made my sgs a lot better, it's faster, little to no lag and it works just great.
I can't wait for Froyo, which hopefully will be with us at the end of this month.

All smartphones have there problems and it doesn't matter what make they are. I have had a variety of smartphones over the past couple of years or so, Desire, Hero, Cliq, Satio, N95, to name but a few. In my experience If you have a phone that has been branded by a network and has a lot of there rubbish on it this will make the phone much worse, this is one thing that drives me mad.
When phone manufactures find out about any problems it takes them time to push out any updates to fix them, but they are only usually small updates that come along in between the major updates like Froyo. I have to say that I think this is the best smartphone I have ever had.

Josh1a1j, so what firmware was the phone using? and what did it update to?

If your on JF3 then you couldn't have done an update via kies. JF3 seems to be what most of the UK handsets shipped with, although I have heard some people say there's came with JM1 out the box.

If you do decide to do the update, first make sure you have the latest version of kies, make sure the drivers install correctly other wise you will have all sorts of problems.
The chance are that when you do try to do the update kies will tell you This device's version cannot be updated, if this happens, there is a guide that I posted on this forum that tells you how to do the update using kies and how to over come this problem, if your serious about doing the update and getting the most out of your phone then ask and I will post it in this thread.

hmmm maybe just maybe it did say that the version could not be updated... But honestly i do not remember...
I love this phone and only want to get the most out of it. I am definitely competent enough to do the lag fix, but i feel it isnt completely necessary for myself as i am happy with it currently, and i am happy to wait for updates...

I am serious about having this update, and i am too familiar with the difficulties kies has been giving me.

Could you please help me with this. It would be much appreciated.
i have kies, but its giving me problems. Where is the best place to download the latest version which contain drivers that actually work consistently???

Thank you

Josh

Ok. first things first how have you got your phone set up for USB connection, go to>settings>about phone>USB settings put it on Ask on connection. The version of kies I have is 1.5.1.10074_2_6. open kies, go to the top left corner, where it says kies with an arrow pointing downwards, click on it and in the drop down box, click on update, another box will open, leave it to check for any updates, this may or may not work if it doesn't work go here http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=UK&CttFileID=3032461&CDCt tType=SW&ModelType=N&ModelName=GT-I9000&VPath=SW/201008/20100818144348234/Kies_1.5.1.10074_2_6.exe save to your desktop so you can find it easily.
Uninstall the version of kies you already have and reboot your PC.
Right click on the file you downloaded and saved to your desktop and choose run as administrator, click ok on the next box that pops up.
Once installed follow the prompts to connect your phone but keep an eye on the drivers being installed, because if one part fails to install properly it wont work, so look for anything that says failed to install. when you have got this far get back to me.

Thank you

Josh

edit...
upon installation of the new kies... it said something about not being able to find a certain file... i am not sure if this has anything to do with the drivers?
I have not yet connected my phone to kies. do the drivers install upon connecting the phone? or upon installing kies?
THANKS

No this doesn't have anything to do with the drivers, the drivers only get installed when you connect your phone for the first time.

Don't connect your phone yet.
Uninstall kies again and then reboot.
Once PC has rebooted, right click the kies .exe file you downloaded and select run as administrator, in the next box click OK.
While it is installing keep an eye on what is happening and if it say something about can't find a file, write it down so we know what to look for, if you don't get the message this time all well and good.
When kies has finished installing reboot your PC, and get back to me. don't forget to write down any error messages you may get whilst installing kies.

it may be easier to PM me from now on

Angry Beautiful piece of technology, ruined by dishonest manufacturer

I gave up my 16Gb iPhone 3G for this Galaxy S i9000. I have started to regret it.
Samsung disabled the button combos on my firmware.
It doesn't connect to any kind/brand/os of desktop/laptop machine.
Overheats.
Randomly switches off...
Samsung sending me to Brisbane's Samsung Customer Centre - which never have/had anything to do with mobile phones... Then sending me to the other end of the town, to Chermside, to the only Authorised Repair "Centre" which is an open kiosk in the middle of the walkway, when I find it out: no, they do not exchange or fix handsets there, they are sending them to Sydney... The Only honest, helpful and professional Person in the whole saga is the kiosk operator, whom is helping to intervene, advise, call others...
My service provider is a scam and Samsung is shorter than helpful... I am crying back my iPhone, at least I would know who to turn to if I need professional service!

Sorry to hear your having problems with your SGS
I have had mine since the beginning of July and initially I had a problem with the WiFi randomly turning itself on, so I upgraded the firmware from JF3 to JM1 using kies and that sorted out the problem and the phone is 100% better now.
Kies can be temperamental, but on the whole I don't get any trouble from it.
There is a registry hack, that is quit simple to do so you can update the firmware using kies.

I read on XDA that this is a faulty boot secondary loader (or something like that) and there is a fix on that site. Apparently happened with Bell phones as well

What have you tried? I know I had problems connecting with my Dell vista laptop but got rid of some long file endings and poof - connected and updated ROM

I've read it runs warm. Is that connected to your random shut offs?

Don't your providers have a test period where you can return your phone to the place you got it? Do it since you are so unhappy with your purchase. Life is too short, ebay it if you have to.
