Default Official Froyo installed

Just upgraded over Kies with my unbranded UK SGS, I'm now on Froyo. No registry hacks, just an official upgrade.

Had you done any of the Kies registry hacks?

Yes, it's the 'Official' version.
Not installed yet but heard it would be coming NEXT week.

I'm now going to find out why it's here a week earlier........

Interesting, I assumed you had done the hack, because I had just come from XDA forums and there was nothing being discussed there! Thanks for the heads up.

So, how is it?

Aaargh! New kies will not allow phone to connect - will try tonight, after all the reports are in.

I see the discussions starting over at XDA now. My Kies update is going painfully slowly, so I'll have to wait until the morning...

So, how is it?
  • I ran Quadrant and got a score around 930 (forgotten what exactly).
  • No info on GPS as i'm trapped inside, my little place phone next to window test showed similar result to the previous firmware, but I know it's all about the ability to move around and keep a lock.
  • Flash, nice!
  • Subtle changes to icons in the settings, not really poked around much more.
  • Using launcherpro so can't yet comment on the touch wiz if that's any different.
  • The upgrade preserved all my installed applications and settings!
  • Task manager showing 304Mb RAM as the max? Although that might be because the rest is being reserved for system. Can't remember if there was any other place to show the system RAM?
  • Market has an "Update All" button, finally

I'm sure someone with lots of time will give the firmware a good fiddle

You're coming from 2.1 then I take it?

Those things sound the same as other Froyo firmwares (I've been on JPK for about a month or so). Will be interested to see more feedback, won't be long coming now - the conversations at XDA will become exponential over the next couple of hours

Did the update wipe your apps, or retain them?

My unbranded SGS is currently running 2.2 (I9000XXJPM, FROYO.XWJP6) which I updated via the registery hack last month. It's running smooth and I've not had any problems My question is, what is the difference between my existing version and any the 'offical' Froyo 2.2 that will be coming soon? Would I be able to update my firmware since I'm already on 2.2 (I9000XXJPM, FROYO.XWJP6)?

Okay, this is what I have learned ~ The 'Official' Froyo is available now.
By the 11th Nov ALL SGS phones will have access to the 'Official' Froyo.

Re the Filesystem:
This 'Official' Froyo has alterations (don't know what they are) to the RFS but THIS IS NOT a replacement. That is still in development and should come at a later to be determined date.

How long did yours take to reboot after the upgrade?

Mine has been on the pulsating 'S' screen for quite a while - and I am concerned!

Just upgraded too, unbranded UK SGS too like OP.
So far so good, lots of nice little touches like new icons, alphabetical order in the app folder and Media scanner tells you how far it's done in percent when you plug in a memory card, selecting text while writing gives you a menu of icons like cut and copy.

So far so good

After half heartedly messing about trying to get Kies working on Windows 7 for a while I went into excitement mode when I read this forum page. So finaly got the phone, windows 7 and Kies (updated to 1.5.3.10103_100) to work together.

Then, clicked firmware upgrade and I just got,
Model Name : GT-19000
Current Version :PDA:JM1/PHONE:JM1/CSC@JMI
The latest version is already installed on connected
device.

So why have some people got the froyo update and I haven't? Any ideas before I send the PC to Silicon heaven?? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks.

Question

Im sitting beside someone with an htc desire also on froyo. It seems to do everything noticably faster than my SGS His benchmark pi score is around 1100 mine is around 1400. Even just moving between screens seems better on the desire. My SGS now feels a bit more sluggish than it did on 2.1 with lagfix. Is there a 2.2 lagfix?

You can run OCLF on 2.2 without a problem. Look it up.

You just need to check whether you're able to access the 3 button recovery mode. I heard a rumour that 2.2 will disable this feature. Can anyone else comment on that?

No flash and slower than 2.1?
My GPS used to work fine I wonder how that will be now.

My Desire doubled in quadrant score plus battery has improved.

Waiting to see how that goes with the SGS...

O_o Unless HTC hand Bell their customized OS and THEN bell probably can push it out.

Generally Speaking you are looking at HTC making customized HTC Sense for Froyo... just like how Samsung was delayed with its own customized OS.

Well surprise surprise the GPS is much worse as well.
So to recap. Its slower it has no flash player and the gps is worse. That sounds like the anti Froyo to me.
Am I missing something ,have I been very unlucky or is samsung taking the mick?

I upgraded last night the upgrade went fine however on reboot I got loads of force close errors and was totally unable to get into the phone . so I took the battery out and

I did a 3 button recovery (so it still works)

and yes I did lose all my apps but the phone alot quicker. I am yet to check the gps but so far all seems good. Battery life seems better too, but that could be because I haven't installed any extra apps yet.

go into settings / applications / manage applications / all and I can see Adobe flash player 10.1

The update seems pretty poor for me aswell, phone is deffinetly more sluggish and the only benefit i've noticed so far is skype kind've working. Guess I'll have to try one of the lag fix's in a few days.

Have you gone into your browser settings and checked that plug-ins are enabled?

Browser | More->Settings->Enable plug-ins->Always On

And slower? It's about the same for me, although my friend with a HTC Desire commented that the flash was very smooth in comparison to his.

As for GPS, worse? What have you done to test the GPS? For the first time ever with the SGS I've managed to get a lock, and have the lock held whilst I've walked around town, so for me that's a huge improvement, no more bouncing around cell towers.

Yeah I also updated to JPO last night, feels the same as JPM and the GPS is still crap.

Signal is worse though.

Sorry for sounding stupid but this is my first phone with Android. Can someone confirm how you update to Froyo through Kies please?
Thanks.

Default kies

go to samsungmobileuk and download the latest version of KIES software.

It only runs on windows machines.

Once downloaded, connect phone, let it find device and then click on firmware upgrade in bottom right corner.

Follow the instructions from there on in.

Thanks. I've done all that. Latest version of Kies installed. But still no update showing.
Could only some of the UK be getting it? I'm in England and on O2.
Thanks again.

This is what I was thinking, i am running a sim free one with 02 network, but no update last night.

Was going to try again later, I thought that the sim frees would get it first and the network locked afterwards. maybe they are just doing it bit by bit ?

Just keep checking, best of luck.
