Default Firmware upgrade error

Ok chaps. Tried to do a firmware upgrade as Kies said I should.
It failed with a message of: Failed to convert to upgrade mode. Please try later' with the phone locked in the Downloading, do not turn off target screen.

So, i disconnect phone, and reboot it. And connect again. It now says firmware could not be upgraded and that I need to do a firmware recovery, by removing the battery and reseating it, and going into recovery mode.

So...is this thing now b0rked or what? I don't actually know how to take the case off
