I had a broken glass and damaged digitizer last month. I also had the same problem with saving data (phone had Eclair 2.1-update1).
I spent about a week searching various forums about saving my data on the phone. I didn't find any solutions. My only resolution was to repair/replace the screen/digitizer assembly. Yes, the screen and digitizer is a 1-piece assembly. So I took my phone to a local mom&pop cellular repair shop, and got the screen replaced with a new OEM one.
Since then, I had updated my OS from 2.1 to 2.3.3 via Kies (this was the first time I have used Kies and backed up my contacts, photos, etc).
The strange thing is that on another computer that doesn't have Kies, my Windows XP Pro SP3 now recognizes my phone as an external storage device, and shows the contents (folders, files) on my phone (both internal sd and external sd cards) WITHOUT Kies. So now I can easily drag&drop my pics files from my phone to my PC (via the included USB cable that came with the phone) without installing Kies on the PC. The only time I use Kies is to back up my contact list.
Good luck.
