Default Advice/tips for Phone?

Hey guys, I've had my Galaxy S for a while now, about a year or so, with Froyo 2.2. Recently, my phone just randomly stopped working on me, so I had to reset everything, including the firmware.

So now I am back to the beginning. The phone is like it was when I first got it. Any tips/suggestions on what I should do? Upgrade it to Froyo again? Root it? Got some nice apps for my phone? If so, could you link me a guide or a tutorial? Like anyone, I just want to be able to make my phone run much faster and smoother.

- I also heard about this Ice Cream Sandwich thing. Not being a tech-savvy guy, I have no idea what that is, except its a version for android phones, like Froyo. It's probably been asked before, but is there a way to update my Galaxy S Vibrant to a ICS? If so, how and is it better than Froyo?

Start with some stable version of Gingerbread like XXJVK or XXJVT

ICS has not been released officially by Samsung for SGS so any flavors available from devs are buggy one or the other way.
