Data Network Connection Problem: Oversees getting only slow data speed. No one here can help.
I have the following three phones:
Samsung Galaxy S 4G, model # SGH-T959V
LG G2X, model # LG-P999
Samsung Spica, model # GT-I5700
My wife and I have recently moved to Nicaragua to do volunteer teaching work. I purchased a SIM chip for the Movistar network. I can connect perfectly to the network with absolutely no problems with making or receiving calls or texts. The problem is when I try to receive data through their Mobile Network. I enter the correct APN and am able to connect to their data network, but only at incredibly slow speeds (avrg 30 kbps). I should be getting 1MB of speed at 3G speeds, but I cannot get that. At the top of my phone is a "G", when I should be getting a "E" or "H". I have the same problem with all three phones.
Here is what I have tried so far.
1) Put my SIM chip in another person's phone. Their phone was able to reach 3G speeds. So the problem is with my phones.
2) Confirmed the APN was entered correctly.
3) Tinkered around with every setting I could change.
4) Did a factory reset.
5) Put in a SIM chip from the other mobile network here called Claro and the phones worked great including the data. So the problem is with my phone and connection with Movistar.
These phones worked perfectly under T-Mobel in the USA, including data. All the phones are unlocked and rooted.
After doing a thorough search on the net my only possible conclusion is that I need to update/change the modem on the phones. I understand that changing your modem can be done by the flash method or ODIN. But where do I get the correct modem file for my phones???? If I install the wrong modem could it cause permanent damage to the phone??? How can I check to see what modem I have installed on the phone???
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem is greatly appreciated and answers to my questions about the modem would be great.
Note: I have to use the Moviestar network because in the areas of the country we will be working only the Movistar network provides a signal.
