Default problems with galaxy s- lost apps and can't recieve calls!

I am knew to this forum and a bit of a technophobe so I hope somebody can help please!
I have a samsung galaxy s, which is approx 18 months old and has been working great until this morning. After charging this morning, it failed to turn on properly, took ages to start up. When it did start, several apps were missing or not working properly, and the apps page had moved all the apps around. I can recieve texts, and use the internet, but not recieve calls. callers are put through to the answer phone. I keep getting messages and a vibration to say that certain apps are not working and need to be forece closed. The hard button in the middle at the bottom doesn't seem to work, which means that i keep having to use the back button which is really annoying. Also, when I go to turn it off, the only option i get is to power off, which is diferent to normal.
Has anyone got any ideas?
