Default GPU (Question) - SGS2 vs. Xperia Play

Hi guys,

I've a question about the GPU of the SGS2.

Samsungs has already comfirmed that the SGS2 will have a quad-core (ARM's Mali 400) GPU that basically every hardcore Apple fan wants the iPhone 5 to have.

My question is: will this (quad-core/ARM's Mali 400) GPU be stronger and more powerfull than the Xperia Play's GPU????? (Snapdragon Adreno 205)

Which of those 2 GPU's has got the best graphic processor for playing games???

I know the Xperia Play has maybe got an advantage with their gamepad but I'd like to know which one has got the best graphics for playing games?

I don't have much knowledge about those processors...

I would appreciate if a few guys can give their opinion for this question...

Cheers

The Mali is several times more powerful than the old Adreno 205. The Xperia is running last year's hardware. It's only advantage is the slide-out gamepad. Other Android devices will be getting the Playstation Suite as well, so if you want Playstation games you will not necessary need to have the Xperia Play, unless you want the gamepad of course. Otherwise, the CPU and especially the GPU is inferior to newer offerings.

Apple users don't want the Mali 400 MP, they will have the PowerVR SGX543MP2 which is about 4x faster.

Well not 100% obviously as it's not out yet,

But based on early results from anandtech which put Mali 400 MP a little behind tegra 2 and the new SGX543MP2 at I believe 3.6x the speed at tegra 2.

You can see that 4x the performance based on this is possible, I hope it's not representive of final/real performance but I have hard time believing performance will improve between now and launch.

The Adreno 205 is not old! It has been out less than 6 months to phone users! The Adreno 200 is old. The games on the 205 that I have seen look fine to me. Check on YouTube to see for self. Yes there may be more powerful GPU's coming out, and I know some people must have the absolute latest hardware, or they will get anxiety.(or correctly called 'status anxiety') . Good luck on your phone hunt!

No, it's not old, but it's still not as fast as the PowerVR SGX540 in the Nexus S or Galaxy S (been out for almost a year)

Since we are talking about the SGS2 and the Xperia Play, both of which have yet to come out, I would think we are talking about GPUs being released in the following months, which are all the new generation (SGX543MP2, Mali 400, Adreno 220) so in comparison the Adreno 205 in the Xperia Play is old. This is the fast-paced mobile market, so six-months is an entire generation already. The Adreno 205 is perfectly fine as software makers won't be pushing the envelope of the newer GPUs in a while and Sony explicitly chose it on their premier device for Playstation Suite, but it doesn't change the fact it is inferior performance-wise. I don't care about 3D performance nor lame benchmarks so I would be perfectly fine with an Adreno 205. But I would imagine the OP does care, and the 205 is last-gen.

Apples dual core A5 chip is made by samsung actually. I'm wondering if it is very similar to the Exanos. We already know that apples A4 and Samsungs hummingbird chips are very similar (differnt gpu's though).

New updated benchmarks for Exynos SoC (on Hardkernel Odroid-A tablet). Looks like it might be competive with PowerVR SGX543MP2 after all.. (borrowed from xda Galaxy S II forum.)

Quote:

GL benchmark Odroid-A tablet with Exynos 4210 (Exynos 4210 is used in SGS2):

GL benchmark Galaxy S:
http://www.glbenchmark.com/result.js...&brand=Samsung

Motorola Xoom and Atrix:
http://www.glbenchmark.com/result.js...brand=Motorola
I've added the iPad2 and Adrenos 205 benchmarks here:

iPad2 (and other apple products):

GLBenchmark 2.0 Result Database

Remember, iPad2 has a 1024x768 screen where as Odroid-A is using a 1366 x 768 screen. So Odroid-A has to fill 33.4 % more pixels vs iPad2. iPad2 scores 5150 median and Odroid-A scores 4132 median. 5150 is only 24.6 % more so Exynos does seem competitive.

HTC devices:

GLBenchmark 2.0 Result Database

I think it would be safe to say that Exynos will be superior to Adreno 205.

Nice find, wasnt aware there were any other devices using this SoC, even if it is only a Reference Platform these are good numbers.

Gives us hope I guess.
