Default Its the power button

When the phone is in your pocket, the power button is being presses by your clothing and held down, hence resetting your phone. Try it, just press and hold the power button even if the phone is locked. The phone will reboot. it drives me nuts and happens about 5 times a day if not more.

Yeah i suppose that could be one possible cause, although i do recall reading in various different forums that the phone was actually being used at the time of the reboot or that they weren't even touching the phone.

Sad my phone does it too

New phone havent rooted it (even though it is soo pretty) I have to hold the button down for about 8 seconds for it to do a power shut down, and I cant do it without confirmation on screen otherwise so I think there is something up with this.

Is there a way to program the switch/diasble (which I imagine next option remove battery) or program 20 secs holding it down to power shut down rather than it being too quick as it may seem? Thanks.

A case of some sort usually fixes the problem, long as the button is surround by casing.

Looks like OP's problem might be different. I'd suggest upgrading to a new stock firmware like KI3.

Also, this post.

Angry Same Problem

I'm having the same problem with my AT&T Galaxy S2. I turn it off and it enters a constant reboot pattern that I can't snap it out of. It's extremely frustrating.... It renders the phone completely unusable. Please someone find a fix for this!.. In the meantime, I think I'll just bring my phone back to the AT&T store... It's not a case, and its not the battery. It does it with 2 different batteries and when it's not in the case also.

Have you tried a factory reset?

If so, I would ask for a replacement. NO phone should reboot-loop at factory default settings.

Not yet but I guess that will be my next course of action before bringing it back for a replacement. I'm brand new to Android just came over from IOS(so glad....), so is there anyway to restore all my settings/wallpapers/contacts before I do that?

The sync and backup features of Kies (Samsung's PC suite) will backup the majority of your content and settings.

You can also sync your contacts with your Google account by going to menu > settings > accounts and sync > google account > sync now. Then, after you've reset your device and set up the Google account again, just sync again.

I would recommend a firmware update. When I was on ke2 I had the problem quite frequently. After updating firmware the problem stopped. I still get the odd 1 or 2 but it all depends on which custom rom I've flashed.

Lightbulb Two thoughts

1. I have a brand new Galaxy S II, not rooted, and after installing some apps, it does not want to switch itself off. It starts on, even after reinserting the battery.
2. Rebooting in your pocket: the phone would switch off if you press the power button long enough, like 6 seconds. And then it reboots , in my case at least.

Looks like a Big Brother is watching you

Uninstall the new apps, check that this behaviour stops, then reinstall them one at a time to see which one is the offender.

Yes, it happens to me when the phone is just sitting there. I come back to it and its waiting for me to enter my SIM code.

I wondered at first whether it was due to certain apps, so I removed those, but now, as it still happens occasionally, I wonder whether it could be the build up of background apps which occurs if you don't do a shutdown now and then..?

I keep track of things with System Tuner Pro by the way.

Notsure OMG!! random resets

while i read this whole forum, i was listening to music on my SG2, and throughout that time my phone randomly shut itself off then back on twice, in a matter of 30 minutes and my phone remained stationary while i was listening. i got my phone exchanged once already a few weeks ago, and hasn't done it since and it just started doing this again today. i last downloaded a game a few days ago. however i will try and see if i can find the root of the problem. this is frustrating and making me very sad. Does anyone know at all?????

No answer I'm afraid just wanted to add the list. Mine started re-booting a few days ago. Happened in the middle of the night last night.

I have mine for three weeks with the latest sw upgrades. It reboots and heats up several times a day if an sd card is inserted. Without a card, it also reboots but much less frequently. I removed Dolphin browser to no avail. My guess is Samsung will ignore until Ice Cream release and hope that fixes it.

mine reboots whether or not it is stationary. there is also no relationship to the number of apps running. it has the most current updates.

I dont know if this will help but what about the battery being just a little bit to small and is disconnecting? I have only had my phone restart if an app gets hung up and the phone has to reset but have not had it randomly shut down on my yet.

I'm going through the same problems. I already changed two 16gb miniSD cards. Then I thought about using an 8gb mini SD card but after I transferred some files into the card, it started rebooting every 5 mins. Really frustrating! I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 from T-Mobile and have only used it for about 1 month.
Originally I thought the miniSD cards are defective so I went back to BestBuy to exchange twice, then I got a smaller 8GB but it's the same problem. If I take out the miniSD card, then the phone goes back to normal, no rebooting at all. I'm not sure if the memory card slot is defective on my phone?

I've had this same issue with my GSII for about 3 weeks now. There are all kind of different post about this error and possible solutions. Some people suggest going to the root menu and clear all the cashe stored in the phone. Other say try dl cache cleaner NG from the market (free) and it will solve the restarting issues. It doesnít seem to matter what I try the problem persists. I only have about 20 apps and a 1 gb memory card. Iím going to take it in to t-mobile and see what they tell me.

I'm not sure if I found out what the problem is. After reading some posts yesterday, I followed one of the suggestions to find out which app was really causing the problem. What I did first was to format the miniSD card. Then I had to re-download all the apps I had which was about 50 or so. What I did different was to leave the SKYPE app on the phone's internal memory instead of transferring it to the miniSD card. So far I haven't had any reboots. I'm thinking it is the SKYPE app that caused the constant reboots. I don't know if you have this app saved on the card? If so, maybe remove it, then format the card and re-download whatever apps you had before and see if you still have the same problem. If you do not have Skype, then I don't know what may be causing your phone to reboot.

Hi there, i was thinking......

I,ve had the problem also, galaxy s2 went dead or the code screen appeared randomly. It didn't appear when the phone was on charge.

I have 2 identical simcards, one in my phone and one for my car phone. i have changed them, to bring the telephone numbers trough the simcard to my carphone.

That was a week ago and since then my problem is gone.Haven't changed anything else, so i think the problem lies in the simcard.

Ask your provider for a new one.

I have programmed goldcards for hobby in the past and they where very keen on the voltage if you try to write them. Maybe the problem lies in the older type simcards. Only guessing ....

Default Galaxy s2 keeps rebooting sometimes

I have this phone from my work now for 3 weeks.
I use my old phone 2 Gb memory card into it, and it works ok the music and pictures works all fine.

The first week no problem, I did one firts firmware upgrade using Kies.

Now last week a second upgrade done with kies, and also the upgrade for the camara.
Android version 2.3.6
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKK2-CL726411
Build number Gingerbread.XWKK2
Its not rooted!

The phone is rebooting must of the times when it on the closet not touched at all. So there for its not a problem of a bad battery connection in my case!

I'm still looking what the problem generated.
I find this worthless that it happens with this expensive device!

I have had my s2 for nearly two months now, with lots of random resets in there, but it's now upped the ante and is resetting three or four times per day. I haven't contacted Virgin, who my contact is through, as I'm worried they'll ask me to send the phone in to be looked at and it'll disappear for months :/

I will try taking the SD card out. Might try the paper trick too but it sounds pretty dodgy to me...

Default galaxy s2 rebooting every couple of hours

Hi all,
I've got the same as Fastfazer. My S2 has been working great from beginning of october. Then after Kies asked me if I wanted to update to:

Android version 2.3.6
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKK2-CL726411
Build number Gingerbread.XWKK2

the phone keeps asking me for a pincode whenever I pick it up. The rebooting is not constant but when I leave it alone for a couple of hours it has rebooted. I really dislike missing phonecalls because of a softwarerelease that Kies advises....

Anyone? pls?

My GS2 also gets rebooting a lot(I did not do any rooting), and once it reboots, it reboots a 3 or 4 times. It did not happen in the first month after I got it. This is the second month, and it kept happening. A few observation:
1) If I reset to factory defaults, it will be working fine for a while(sometimes one day, sometimes half day), and once I setup gmail, loaded up the apps(not a lot, only a few: netflix, CNN, MSNBC, touchpal, google voice, ABC news, the rest are the ATT pre-loaded), playing for half a day to one day, it will start rebooting again.
2)Once it reboots, it will cut off WIFI connection, I have to mannual re-connect WIFI.
3)Once the battery is below 20%, it tends to happen more often.

I highly suspect this is due to memories timing problem(physical defects in the memories), I sent it back to Samsung for checking, they only re-installed the software and claimed to have fixed the problem. After I got the phone, the second day I had the reboot again(after I setup gmail and loaded up the apps), I am sending them back to Samsung again, will update on what happen...

Looks like a lot of folks had similar problems with me, did anyone ever contact Samsung?

Default s2 reboots

I have the same problem as fastfazer and ninpoka.

Since I upgraded my brand new Galaxy S2 to Android 2.3.6 using Kies it tends to reboot on a regular basis (even when on the table). It's very anoying since I have to re-enter my PIN-code every time. I'm missing phone calls because of this!

Is there something wrong with this upgrade?

Did somebody find a work-around for this problem yet?

Same problem here.
I think its something wrong with the 2.3.6 update, thinking about back in it down to another if this isn't fixed soon.

same here as the other guys. Having GS2 since September. Works great, no complains.
Few days ago I upgraded via KIES to 2.3.6 version and from there on, it start to reboot at random. Not often, say once every day or every two days... I don't play with it, it's on a table doing nothing, I just hear the boot Samsung sound playing....

Same problem here with boot looping, but it seems Skype and 2.3.6 are allergic to each other. I went back to the states for the Thanksgiving holiday and bought a prepaid T-mobile SIM card and the first thing the network wanted to do was upgrade the firmware so I thought great-make use of the faster connection while I'm here...since then it's been the blues. I've uninstalled Skype and that's reduced the number of times it reboots.
Yet, it still reboots asking for the SIM pin number every time.
It's annoying when at 3am you hear the start up melody from the phone as it sits on the nightstand...Argh!
Going back to the 2.3.5 firmware the S2 worked really great for me with it.
Zzzzzz....

Anyone figured how to resolve the reboot under 2.3.6

Updated 2 days ago. Yesterday was fine, but it rebooted twice today.

Removing Skype did the trick for me. I think it is a conflict with one or 2 applications installed.

Try removing each application starting with the most complex one.

That would mean all the settings and apps would be wiped too... won't it? Is there a way to clear the cache (read it might be an issue with the old 2.3.3 clashing) without resetting everything. I read the post saying something like that but it didn't mentioned specifically whether all the apps can be maintained, so not willing to try just yet.

Cheers

Yes i did lose my apps but in my case settings remained the same and the technician also stated it could be reminence of the old firmware clashing with the new firmware i myself tried many other suggestions factory reset, 1 click clear from the market nothing worked except this i never had this problem until i updated to 2.3.6

Hi all,
I'm running an unrooted, vodafone branded 2.3.3 in Ireland and this just started happening to me last night. I feel it may be related to apps being stored on the sd card. I'm guessing this is the problem as it's the only thing I did this week with the phone was to move apps to the sd card. Just need now to get the phone to say on long enough to get them all moved back

Tongue Samsung Galaxy S2 Reboot Problem

Hello,, I faced this problem on my 5 months old Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-i9100. Lately, it starts restarting itself for no reason, I don't use a protection case and I don't put it in my pocket. It reboots itself even when it is on a table. BUT! I have found the problem, some apps. I have uninstalled three apps and then, it stopped rebooting itself. These apps were: FreeSync, Let's Golf 3, SayHi. So if you are facing this rebooting problem, try to remove some apps, especially those with notification icons.

Smile SD card was problem (two SD's of Galaxy 2)

I had the same problem! Pulled the external SD and it stopped!
Turns out when an app said it could save to an SD card it was saving to EXTERNAL SD.

The Galaxy 2 has 14 gig of INTERNAL SD. Apps are supposed to copy to INTERNAL SD. Most of the android phone don't have an INTERNAL SD and external SD....sooo...I got all these ghost apps on the remove 8 gig sd chip that are supposed to be transferred to the internal somehow.

They need programmers to address what is INTERNAL and what is EXTERNAL SD.

Either the android OS or the various Apps need to address this...the GALAXY 2 is different.

Default Reboots after upgrade to 2.3.6

I've had my SGS2 now since July and I have NEVER had this issue until I updated the phone to 2.3.6 last week (Baseband i9100XXKI4). Now it reboots 2 to 3 times a day. I don't think it's a loose battery issue otherwise it wouldn't switch itself back on. Tonight was the first time it rebooted itself in the middle of a phone call. The reboots happen whether its in my pocket or just sitting on the table. My brother in law's SGS2 is exactly the same now. He's reboots started AFTER updating to 2.3.6.

My wife's SGS2 is still on 2.3.3 (i9100XXKF3) and her phone has NEVER rebooted itself since she got it 2 months ago. How do I go back to her version.....??? And where can I find it?

Thanks in advance....

I think the problem is that the new firmware is clashing with the remnants of the old firmware. Probably in some cache somewhere. The recommended method is to factory reset the phone. Unfortunately this also means all apps and settings would be reset, but your phone remains at 2.3.6

Its the reason I haven't went to that extent yet.

Mine has started doing the same thing, since I updated to 2.3.5

Before that never.

It was doing it about once a week, but did it twice this morning. It has only done it (that I am aware of) whilst lying stationary on a table!

Default How the get rid of the reboots

How the get rid of the reboots:

The reason for the random reboots is this:

- happens after a firmware update
- happens because Samsung doesn't perform a ram-wipe before the update starts. Shame on you Samsung R&D
- so: after you've updated your phone, and all is fine right after the update, just shut down the phone.
- then: pull out the battery AND wait for a few minutes. This is important that the statical ram is really cleared.
- put battery back in & start the phone - now all is ok :-)

So all the stories about the paper underneeth the battery was ok because the battery has been removed ! Not because of the paper !
There just was something left in the memory because Samsung overlooked it
It isn't the apps either (tried that too).

Default I think I'm dropping Android

Yeah, my galaxy s II has been occasionally rebooting itself for 3 weeks now. Most often after I shut down to charge for the night and then boot in morning. It will go through 4-5 reboots before it stabilizes itself. I've done 3 system "resets" or whatever they call going back and removing everything. AND THE IS there NO BACKUP OR TRANSFER WIZARD ON DROID! So it talks an hour to get all your icons back in place and email accounts setup.

I moved to android from Blackberry because it was supposed to be so much better. The wifi voice is actually pretty horrible compared to my old UMA blackberry wifi voice. People complain on the other end of my calls that I must have a cheap cell because it sounds so bad on the wifi (if I walk around..it's pretty good if I stand still on wifi voice)

The rebooting though is silly....a unix based OS should not fail so often.

I'm also not please that it doesn't have any sophisticated dial by voice for the car. It far more difficult to make calls while driving. With the blackberry I could talk into my headset what numbers I wanted dialed and it would do it. Android isn't that slick....it does have a lot of apps though.
